On this day in 1822, revolutionary Denmark Vesey planned a slave revolt to take place in South Carolina, intending for thousands of slaves to kill their masters and sail to Haiti; instead, he was betrayed by slaves and executed.
Denmark Vesey (c. 1767 - 1822) was a literate, skilled carpenter and community leader among in Charleston, South Carolina. Likely born into slavery in St. Thomas, Vesey was enslaved by Captain Joseph Vesey in Bermuda.
At the age of 32, he won a lottery and bought his freedom, but was unable to buy the freedom of his wife and children. In 1818 he co-founded an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) congregation in the city, which enjoyed the support of local white clergy. The church attracted 1,848 members, making it the second-largest AME congregation in the nation.
Vesey reportedly began planning the insurrection to take place on Bastille Day, July 14th, 1822, a date notable for its association with the French Revolution, whose victors had abolished slavery in Saint-Domingue.
News of the plan was said to be spread among thousands of black people throughout Charleston and for tens of miles through plantations along the Carolina coast. Two slaves opposed to Vesey’s scheme, George Wilson and Joe LaRoche, gave the first specific testimony about a coming uprising to Charleston officials, saying an uprising was planned for July 14th.
In June, Vesey was formally accused of being the leader in “the rising”. He was convicted and quickly executed on July 2nd.
In the aftermath of Vesey’s and others’ convictions, authorities blamed “black religion” for contributing to the uprising, noting Vesey’s role in the AME church.
The reverend of the church was driven out of the state. Charleston officials ordered the large congregation to be dispersed and the church building to be razed. No black church officially met in Charleston until after the Civil War.

Went camping over the weekend with a couple people and any time I do things like this I always end up really sad; like I don’t fit in, like I’m an alien. I feel like I couldn’t get a word in during conversations, or some things I would say would just be ignored but I just could’ve been too quiet, idk.
I just really really need to accept that I am not capable of fitting in in groups and making new friends is highly unlikely.
You had enough friends to get invited to camping. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
I mean, one at least lol. It just really sucks to feel like you’re always orbiting around people instead of enmeshed in the group like everyone else, like a ghost, and you can’t shake the feelings even if you try to convince yourself that your thoughts are irrational. And sucks to be someone who just says weird shit, I guess. I do have one or two secure relationships where my friends display their affection for me but I just have such a hard time believing it.
I have a lot of attachment issues/negative core beliefs as well as being ND and no amount of CBT/thinking my way through these things has helped, but I’m still trying to work through it
I’m dating the cute goth girl now!
Congratulations. Since you’ve got the bag its clear we must now look to you as our dating guru.
I’ve actually been doing pretty well for myself since I got on the dating apps even though I have a bunch of demerits (being in sober living, ect.) just being honest about who I am, and what my limitations are has gotten me far
How are dating apps? I’ve thought about it but never tried them, mostly because I’m an Opsec enjoyer.
I like Taimi quite a bit, it’s a queer dating app so the pool is a bit better than the other dating apps. Lots of chasers though, pretty much have to browse with cis men turned off because of the sheer number of chasers

Reposting cause I made this comment like 5 minutes before the last mega got locked:
The last 35% of Civ games are just kinda boring huh
I think I generally have more fun in the last 35% of a Civ game than a Stellaris game. Also, I only played one Civ 7 game, but it felt a lot more interesting in the endgame than Civ 6.
Does civ 7 do anything specific to make end games more fun? Someone told me they wipe some stuff of the board between eras preventing too much snowballing, is that it?
Yeah, the game is divided into stages that more or less reset certain kinds of progression and give you completely different win conditions and goals. Beyond stopping snowballing, it also structures the game more so you aren’t coasting without much purpose like what sometimes happens in other civ games.
That does sound like an interesting wrinkle on the formula, and prevents the embarrassing situation of Genghis Khans horses still dominating the map by the future era, or getting lucky with your spawn and being seven eras ahead.
I feel its the curse of 4x/map strategy games to have lategame to be boring. You will probablly snowballed hatder than Ai and the rest of the game either becomes a waiting game until you win in civ or microing your army just to eliminate the AI. Unless you have a really good PC usually the game itself slows to a halt too.
Funny now that you mention it I’m at that point with my current CK2 run as well. I got all the achievements I was shooting for except the “play until end date” one and I’m really strong but managing such a huge realm for ~250 more years is so boring
with ck2 at least you can load your save then just select to play a different dynasty in the same world
AI is just so bad in civ
I was playing on Prince so yeah other civs weren’t posing too much of a threat. But even the micro that would still exist like moving my army of missionaries and apostles around is so protracted
There should be a thing like “Six degrees of Kevin bacon” for online content creators but its like “Degrees of working with a nazi” and I bet no ones number would go over 3.
Mine is 2. I recently worked with a woman who was close to retirement. Whenever the topic of military service came up, she’d often mentioned how proud she was of her father’s service in the navy in WW2. The German navy. As I don’t subscribe to “clean wehrmacht” bullshit, I consider her dad a nazi.
Apparently when he emigrated from Germany to Canada in the late 1940s, he had problems settling in the Maritimes. He “felt unwelcome” to use her words. He was apparently extremely welcome in southern Ontario though.
The fact that so many Germans didn’t even have shame enough to lie is proof that Stalin shouldn’t have stopped at Berlin
Canada is such a pro Nazi place I’m surprised he felt unwelcome in the maritimes
Lots of Maritimers signed up for service in the military because of extreme poverty, especially after the great depression. Even being a soldier in wartime was seen as a better opportunity than being a farmhand in perpetual poverty. Two of my great-uncles died at Juno Beach. Veterans in the Maritimes may have been very politically conservative by modern standards, but they loathed anyone who was even remotely connected to the German military. Almost everyone on the east coast lost close family in the war.
Every mainstream platform works with nazis so any non-fringe content creator is already at 2 by default.
That feels unfair. We don’t count erdos number by whether you work at the same university. It should be individuals. So eg:
Will Menaker -> Andrew Yang -> one of the open white supremacists involved with Yang somehow.
The entire chaposphere -> Brace Belden -> Jeffrey Epstein (close personal friends)
Epstein was just a guy who won the lottery a lot and gave great tax advice though.
Got three inches of rainwater in the parking lot
Update: Per police dispatch radio, people nearby are being evacuated due to flooding
neurotypical (derogatory)
More and more people are saying it
Bruce Banner just needs to scroll twitter/reddit to go full hulk mode.
not a bad parody idea tbh, you could probably totally get away with a Legally Distinct Hulk Like Guy who has to be like “hold up let me browse my feed for a sec” before going into Fight Mode. Maybe you could make it about like, the contrast between needing the strength gained and the clear expense of mental health that comes with it
god damn red note taught me the chinese word for “bullshit” but now every time I think about it I imagine spongebob saying it
Everyone should work less, consume less and chill out a whole lot more. Three day work week is the minimum we should strive for
It’s astonishing what a difference a switch to a 3 day weekends (32 hour work week) would make to my quality of life.
Generally, I’m for any technology that reduces labour. But holy fuck I hate leaf blowers I genuinely want labourers to only be 20% as efficient when it comes to gathering up leaves and detritus and let the cards fall where they may.
The thing is, it’s more efficient at doing a job that really shouldn’t be done except in rare cases. Like, in practice, the vast major of “leaf” blowing is getting grass clippings off of sidewalks/driveways/roads, but those lawns shouldn’t exist in the first place! In a better world, all those stupid-ass lawns would be replaced by native gardens/xeriscaping.
Goddamn, though, I really hate gas-powered leaf blowers especially. It’s unfathomable that they’re even legal, considering the noise and pollution they spew from their horribly inefficient engines. I’ve read about municipalities and counties banning them here and there (and they’re banned for sale in California along with gas-powered trimmers), but it would be nice to just rid ourselves of them in one fell swoop.
Because a bunch of reactionaries have adopted the “Free Palestine” rhetoric, every now and then my twitter TL shows me a tweet that’s just antisemitism. Saw something earlier about how Jews get interest-free loans in the US and a reply was like “Don’t let them tell you otherwise, the Talmud says it’s okay to lie to goyim”. The exact same thing they say about Muslims with Taqiyya or whatever. I’m pretty sure more chuds have read the Talmud than Jewish Israelis.
a bunch of reactionaries have adopted the “Free Palestine” rhetoric
uh oh, they took whiteness away from the jews. where have i seen this before?
Been seeing a lot of similar stuff on rednote; reactionaries using Palestine to run cover for their
posting . Feel bad for our Jewish comrades
It worries me that it reached rednote. I know there’s been some talk about Jewish exceptionalism as it pertains to elevating Jewish antizionist voices above Palestinians, but it seems like it genuinely is super important to keep highlighting Jewish allies so the movement doesn’t get slandered by nazi freaks.
The clock has come back around to the bleach demon discourse once again
I can feel the hyperfixation happening in real time
I’ve noticed a correlation between my social media use and my general productivity-dishes, laundry, reading, exercise. But as we all know correlation does not mean causation so no use pondering over that.
I find that with less social media even other screen time feels better. Like I’ve spent weekends doing either movie marathons or playing video games and felt better and somehow like my time was spent more productively than if I were just scrolling.
But I guess it helps that usually those activities are easier to build productive habits around, like a video game is a better reward for doing the dishes than doomscrolling is.
When my social media is blocked and I’m watching tv, I feel like guilt and dread and get to enjoy the activity slightly more. Now laundry on the other hand…
