As an American, same.
6/10 Americans won’t trust America again also.
Came here to say this. The last decade has truly flipped my perception of the rest of america on its head. Well, my perception of conservatives, at least. I always knew that people are people and there’s a spectrum of good to bad. I’ve come to realize that Republicans literally do not care about trying to help anyone else unless they see some sort of personal return of either money or power. I’ve seen so many people that I thought were “a good, slightly dumb person misguided by politics” fully throw themselves behind Trump. Everything that they say they believe in is apparently a lie, since they so readily line up to worship a person so antithetical to what they pretend to believe. I can not and do not trust anyone that identifies with Republicans or even conservatism at this point.
And they shouldn’t.
You figure? You figure people who elect a psychopath who threatens to destroy my country economically before annexing it as the fifty-first state may have lost a lot of trust?
That’s just crazy talk!
Thursday’s poll found that 42 per cent of Canadians said they believe Carney will succeed in negotiating a new trade deal with the Trump administration.
Why? I don’t want Canada to have a trade deal with the USA. I want Canada to isolate the USA. A trade wall, ideally armed with machine guns and flamethrowers. Let them stew in their own juices while we trade with countries that aren’t prone to electing obvious man-toddlers into the highest possible office.
So when your country eventually elects their own little Hitler you’d want the same for yourself? You want the whole world to isolate you and threaten to kill you if you leave. Glad to see Canadian niceness is as hypocritical as ever.
If my country elects our own little Hitler, fucking YES I’d want the world to isolate us until we learned to grow the fuck up. If we elect our own little Hitler, we are a legit threat to the world. We really should be isolated until we can prove we are no longer carriers for the infection.
lol YOU GUYS THREATENED US. OF COURSE WE WANT TO ISOLATE FROM YOU. We literally cannot trust you guys to be tied economically to.
The sheer whining from the USA, like they’re the victims in this, would be amusing were it not such an alarming indicator of just how utterly fucked their worldview is.
Seriously. It’s funny how American liberals like to gripe about how narrow and self centred their conservative countrymen’s worldviews are, but they’re just as bad and just don’t realize it.
I have maintained for well over two decades now that there is no “left” in the USA.
What the USA considers “left” is centre-right in the view of the sane parts of the world. What the USA considers “far left” is “sensible social democracy” in the sane parts of the world.
Yep same.
Yep. I say this as a resident of the United States and it will take at minimum decades to fix the damage that Trump has caused in just nine months. More likely (assuming the US survives) it will take multiple generations to fix the damage from Trumps second term.
Seconded as another American - the brain drain alone from deterring immigration by conservatives may make that process even longer (or require a new system of governance entirely)
Also the brain drain by actively fighting to prevent scientific research.
Yet another debuff to the pile XD
As a Canadian- it isn’t “the damage Trump has caused in 9 months.” It’s the damage the US populace at large has done and allowed to be done for roughly 3-4 decades while literally everyone was telling you to wake the fuck up because this was the trajectory you were on.
In response to the entire world trying to warn you off this path, you closed your eyes, stuck your fingers in your ears, flipped us off, yelled louder and started flying your flags more conspicuously.
Trump is one small part of the gargantuan fuckup YOU allowed to happen. Trump is a symptom. A few entire generations of Americans are the cause.
I know, I know. We’ve seen the rot spreading since Regan, but it’s nearly impossible to get rid of when about half the voting public think it’s ordained by god to vote straight republican.
Except when they wanted to travel. Then they traded their conspicuous flags for Canadian ones.
And that’s only nine months how long to fix the full term damage.
Your second revolution is going to be starting soon.
It already is happening and they are letting it happen. The second civil war well be bloodless if the left allows it. And so far the left seems fine with it.
The left won’t be the first one who draws blood.
Maybe it should. How long will you idly watch the masked goons kidnapping people? Like honestly i do not see a reason for Trump to rush anything more than he does. He is in a very comfortable place, being able to spread his authoritarian powers more and more. I don’t see the point coming where “the left” (as if america has many of those to begin with) revolts against this new breed of fascism. It is not going to get easier over time.
The Left is way outnumbered by Liberals in the US. Unfortunately, their sensibilities matter. They will side with fascists if they feel it necessary to “not be the ones who started it”.
Trust them to do what exactly? Were y’all asleep during covid? You can’t trust humans to put a mask on during a pandemic. But I don’t go into every interaction assuming the worst of the other person. Now if we’re talking about the American government? Yeah that’s a valid sentiment.
Trust them to have basic human decency, trust them to not invade Canada, trust them to rigorously oppose a criminal regime?
As George Carlin said: “Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don’t fall out of the sky. They don’t pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It’s what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders.”
They were calling to invade Canada before Trump.
Not impossible but likely very marginal since I’ve never heard of it.
Or any time during NAFTA.
Too many lemmy conservatives left onguardforthee now it’s full of pro US posters.
The other four need to wake up.
The other 4 never trusted them to begin with
Or they are Maple Maga. We’re not out of the woods yet, we have our own Nazi scum to purge and lance from the boil that bigotry and conservatives have become on our society.
Seems four out of ten Canadians aren’t paying attention.
My parents are in this 4 of 10. They watch Fox News, donate regularly to the Republican party even though they are Canadian, they do not donate to the conservative party of Canada (I dunno), call me every time Carney does something they dislike because I voted Liberal, and still spend a good chunk of their time in Florida where they own property and are proud of it.
Trump has become an unpopular subject as my sister will lose her shit at family gatherings so they no longer mention his name. But are big supporters!
“maple MAGA” like your parents kind of fascinate me. I wonder how deep the mentality goes for these people, and how much is just aesthetics and/or a deeply misguided attempt to escape from the relative boredom of a safe 1st-world country whose democracy is still intact. It demonstrates a stunning lack of awareness though, and it’s cute how they don’t seem to realize that actual MAGA would likely reject them out of hand for being “foreigners”.
They spend 6 months of the year in Florida and have a large group of MAGA folk they golf with. My step father is a former corporate COO, he has tons of like-minded friends down there. They’re accepted and welcomed
In my experience about 4 out of 10 people don’t know anything about critical thinking; what it is or how to do it.
I wonder how many of those already had an opinion of the Americans that was so low it couldn’t sink any further?
I don’t blame y’all
That is because we actually can’t.
The US has been a shit show since the end of WWII and they’ve fucked over countless countries and people, mostly for greed. It’s laws are mostly setup first for greed, then for humans. Don’t trust that place, whatever president comes next will at best only be marginally better than the current shit stain
Its laws are mostly set up
FTFY. We had good elementary schools; did you go? :-p
So pointlessly rude. What were you trying to accomplish?
This account is always around nitpicking typos with a side of snark. Grammar nazi shit is just so imverysmart with an undercurrent of classism, and I bet they’ve never actually dipped more than a toe into linguistics.
Ah, thank’s for the heads’ up.
What’s your second language and are you as good as most people are with their second language (that is english)? If so, you still are a prick.
This is so heartbreaking. I live on the border, frequently visit Ontario and Quebec, even honeymooned in the Maritimes. It’s hard to imagine that I may never be able to do that ever again, but here we are.
I recall how bad I felt waking up in November 2024 knowing that awful things were going to happen, but alienating our closest ally was not one of them. Stay safe, Canada, I hope to see you again some time.
Canadian here close to the border. I used to visit your country somewhat regularly, but I don’t think I’ll ever go down south again. My wife has some extended family in the states and they’ll never visit up here so I guess we just aren’t seeing them ever again. It’s unfortunate but that’s what video calls are for I guess.
As a Canadian, I say come visit still. We’d love to have you as long as you’re respectful and don’t bring pro-Trump speech with you (and given you’re on Lemmy I’m sure you’re the kind of person we’d welcome with open arms up here).
First of all, thank you to all the kind replies from Canadians to this. It’s one of the reasons I love Canada so much. It’s not going to Canada that I worry about, it’s going back into the US that gives me pause. You just never know what the border policy might be on any given day.
No one is against Americans vacationing in Canada. Many of us chose not to go down because of this stupid economic warfare the administration started. But that’s just business, as they say. It’s about asserting economic independence. Come visit. No worries, buddy.
Seconded. Just make sure your American papers are in order for when you return.
Be, however, on your best behaviour because people are going to have a hair trigger on normal American shitfuckery these days.
It’s really sad.
As a country we decided to get back with our psychopathic abusive ex. And now that psychopathic ex is doing the absolutely typical thing for an abuser: isolating us so we have no choice but to stay with them.
So it’s sad that Canada is totally justified in feeling that way, but it’s double frustrating that it also plays exactly into what Trump wants.
The problem isn’t the psycho ex. The problem is that you keep marrying increasingly psycho people.
Trump is a symptom, not the cause, of the USA’s problems.
“I hope to see you again some time.” Honestly, I hope so to.
Lol. Canada was one of the only countries that used to trust America. No one wants to play with the bully
We didn’t fully trust them.
But it was convenient to deal with them, based on proximity.
Now that they’ve gone full retard that proximity advantage isn’t worth what it once was.
Problem is everyone wants to play with that bully even now. The world wants access to the American market since they are by far the largest and they consume the most.
At the moment, until the current administration tanks the economy and destroys what is left of the middle class.
China my dude. You can hardly make a movie in hollywood these days if it can’t appeal to the Chinese on some level.
The Chinese consumer market flirts with being larger than the American one. Per capita they spend less, but there’s four times as many of them and this balances out.
I think at the immediate moment the Chinese consumer market is very slightly smaller than the USA, which makes your “by far” kinda comical to read. But in the last five years China and the USA have swapped places a couple of times for largest consumer market and projections to 2030 will have China consistently beating the USA by that point.
So smart money doesn’t want to play with the bully. He’s falling over.
China doesnt have a fair market to compete in so although it seems like it will over take the US people are very hesitant to switch focus away from the US.
Define “fair market”?
not having the government repo all your assets and IP and spin up a clone.
Tell me you have no fucking clue what you’re talking about without using those words.
you got a clear and relevant response if thats all you can say why even bother replying.
that’s completely fair
for all the terrible things both political parties wrought globally from the end of WWII until a Jan 20, 2017, they were united (more or less) in a commitment to being a rules and laws based main even if it hurt “their side” from time to time.
Even Reagan’s “11th Amendment” would be set aside from time to time to preserve America’s standing in the world.
Not so any more. And i don’t actually know if it’s possible to get that reputation back.
Only 6 in 10?
4 in 10 thinks we can fix it at some point.
If the USA gets their act together and can show that they can elect sane politicians 12+ years after trump/vance term ends.
That’s my hope.
Their system prevents them from electing sane politicians.
I’m sucking down the hopeium bottle by bottle:
It shows! 🤣
Can they elect none geriatric people maybe.
That would be a great start indeed. The US government looks like an old folk’s home, complete with the rambling, incoherent dementia-sufferers.
12+ years total of sane politicians or in a row? Because I’m sure we can get a nonfascist in eventually, but 12+ years in a row of politicians who are merely sane is a big ask pretty much everywhere
When you compare to the fascist felon there’s a wide margin for sanity.
Or 3 out of the 4 never trusted them to begin with. 1 might think we can fix it
4 in 10 already distrusted the US.
The US has become a laughing stock
Most of the world has considered it untrustworthy for decades already
Look at how they act. The rest of the world is showing disproval, while slowly moving to implementing the same systems. It is all theater, they are all bought out. There is no free land left in the world.
Yes, it’s a global trend towards fascism. But there are still places more free than the USA, for now at least. Still, people everywhere need to fight back against fascism because there is no alliance of antifascist nations to save us this time. It will have to be overthrown from within each country.
What do you expect me to do? 3D print a drone army? Design an empathy virus? “Accidentally” block the Suez canal in the hopes that the trade collapse leads to better conditions long-therm?
Find other people who are organizing locally. Meaningful resistance is only possible when people work together.
Ok, that’s me first. But have to break out of my unholy work-life balance. Right now, I’m too distracted to do anything of meaning.
Breaking out of wage slavery has meaning in itself. Lowering work time and lowering consumption is poison for capitalism. Moving away from the capitalist economy also helps(fixing stuff, foraging, direct trade with neighbors and so forth).
Not saying it is easy or that anybody can just do it, but it is meaningful.
I work to provide indirectly for rhe mining industry and agriculture industry
I’m always grateful for the fact that I don’t live in 'Murica
There is no move towards authoritarian overreach in Australia
The closest thing is a dumb idea about social media and kids under sixteen, but that’s a hangover from the last conservative government and is doomed to failure
Keep it that way. Don’t get complacent. They are there, festering. I heard about the March for Australia just a few weeks ago.
Fortunately, they’re a fringe, unlike the MAGA cunts
Australia isn’t perfect, but it’s better than most places
They were fringe here in the United States, too. Until they weren’t. Here’s hoping Australia stays that way.
We have compulsory voting, which is one of the best things ever
It stops lunatics on the fringe from gaining undue influence
Should be kids under 21

Nobody wants to piss off America. Not doing business with America well drop their GDP and nobody wants that. Some of the government’s have made concessions I wouldn’t have thought just for America.
