  • Yeah, I've seen that before with psychopaths that I know, they have the same creepy smile and the things they say... Holy fuck.

  • Please pop already

  • Pay attention

There are boat loads of countries right now doing the exact same thing. This is not a "oh you California again", this is yet another step in a process that had been ongoing since at least pre-2000. Every fucking year the encryption battle comes back and they only need to win once, then it's done

  • No. I was questioning why drink whatever that is if they don't like it. If you don't like it, don't drink it?

  • SAS drives? Is that a brand? I'll have to look into that then, I guess

  • It's too late or not too late depending on what outcome you're aiming for.

The outcome "everything will be fine" has come and gone long ago. Best we can hope for is limiting the amount of digits used to write down the casualties now, lessen the impact. Yay. Sorry for my lack of enthusiasm on this but I've spent 5 decades watching this. 5 decades ago I was already aware of climate change. Humanity was aware for over 120 years already!

And what have we done to lessen the impact?

You'd expect me to say "zero" but that would be wrong. We made it worse. Year after year. Remember those Paris climate accords that had zero binding resolutions, so was for nothing anyways?

Yeah, not only did no country do anything at all, pretty much every country increased their carbon emissions since. They didn't lower it insufficiently, no, they fucking. Made. It. Worse....

Which at least was within my expectations because back then I was on Reddit and wrote about those accords that the result would be that by now things actually were accelerating instead of slowing down.

I was told by kind strangers like you that I was a doomer and that it wasn't too late and that we needed to lessen impact and...

I've heard all of this hundreds of times before and I can tell you, for as long as we allow billionaires and dictators to exist, we ARE doomed.

Even if humanity starts today working aggressively to lower CO2 emissions, it's still a big question if and how many of us will be able to yo survive.

But humanity ain't doing shit, ever, billionaires will make sure of that because they need their money.

So pardon my cynicism, pardon my anger and doomsday thinking but we as a species with around 8 or so billion members, allowed a tiny sliver of psychopaths, a few tens of thousands or so, to fuck all of us over for good. We are possibly the only place in the universe with life, let alone "intelligent" life, and we have allowed a tiny group to destroy that forever.

And I have to be optimistic?

    How?

  • (almost) Everyone watches porn, yet in my experience, the vast majority of people look down on performers

I guess it's this social status thing.

It's similar to how in all the most religious.placea people are mostly into gay and trans porn. Noooooobody watches it, but porn sites continuously have to stream that porn there, they don't know how that happens either, magic!

  • My mother knows his name, she's too old for the internet and she's in Europe

However, she watches this weird bulb that emits light and it shows her things from around the world. I believe it's called a television and the thing she sometimes watches is called "news" I believe.

Just because you are ignorant doesn't mean that everyone is

  • Yeah, but no.

That is the problem, WE (as in you and I) cannot do anything and WE shouldn't have to be responsible for this shit

It's the same as recycling. I separate all by garbage down to toothpicks, but Taylor Swift flies her private jet for whatever dumb shit and undies all the work millions of people do with a single fucking flight.

Big chain stores on a daily basis throw away millions of kilos in perfectly fine food, clothes and other products (without separation for recycling, of course) to keep prices up, and somehow I need to fix this problem?

We, as in you and me and millions more can work for decades to build up something amazing and it gets torn down in a day by some billionaire or dictator, the end.

I'm really really not trying to be a dick, I'm just trying to show a reality check here. I've heard "save the Amazon!!" literally all my life, decades, and NOTHING was done to stop it. Oh sure, er had little wins here and there, like this one, which got washed away a year later by some new asshole on the block

I'm not saying "why even bother anymore", though the feeling is... Familiar, at this point, but I am saying that we need to start doing something else because we're focused on the wrong problem

The Amazon is not a problem, it's a symptom of the real problem. The real problem is that out of 8 billion people on this world there is a tiny sliver, a few tens of thousands of psychopaths at most, that have gathered all the power and money. Be it billionaires, dictators, doesn't matter, same shit, different day.

THAT is the problem, that is the issue that needs fixing. These people need to be stopped, one way or another, and never to return.

Ordinary people don't want wars. Why do we have wars? That tiny group of people. The current Iran war is the result of a small group of US government officials and a part of the Israeli government.

The Amazon problem? Look down history, all the shit that happened there has to do with money and power.

None of it will ever really stop for as long as we continue looking at the symptoms. We need to stop the cause.

    How?

    I'm open to suggestions!

Personally, I'd LOVE to see world wide wealth caps. Start with, say 100 million, then a decade later you can lower that to 10. Have normal tax brackets, but nobody can be worth more than that cap, the last bracket. Any income or existing Wealth after that goes 100% to taxes. Governments will finally have the income to do things like universal healthcare, free education, even some form of universal basic income

That's never going to happen of course because that requires the rich and powerful to finally be the same as the rest of us, and they'll never allow that.

But with that, we'd finally be able to focus on fixing the world without a few powerful psychopaths fucking everything up for everyone just so they can get a little richer

  • I agree with you

The problem is that I've been alive probably much longer than you, and I've seen news like this a hundred times already.

Next year the Amazon will again be burned down at record speed because of some new president that was elected who thinks that trees are useless wastes of space or something like that.

I would call it good news when the entire Amazon, all of it, is declared a nature preserve that humanity has to protect at all cost.

That will never happen. The best we can hope for is that it disappears a little slower.

And "we have to start somewhere"? Do you know how many "starts" I've seen over the decades? Where we need to start is getting rid of the rich, the billionaires, the centillionaires, the Wall Street types that add nothing to this world, just takes from it, the dictators, the fascists, all of it. Those are the actual problem. Climate change is just a symptom of the illness that is them

  • ntfy.sh v2.18.0 was written by AI

    Jump
  • Nah, wouldn't do that. CSS needs to be well designed to function properly, you need actual developers for that or you'll screw over your users.

But yeah, to give quick pointers and ideas to flesh out, it's reasonably useful

If that is enough to warrant it's extreme energy use, the spread of AI slop everywhere, the pollution, the uncontrolled datacenter expansions, the explosion in hardware costs it created, the countless death and suffering it caused through AI psychosis, the AI childporn bots (hello grok, are you still the world's biggest child porn producer or did Elmo finally reign you in to again be mecha Hitler?), the....

Long story short, AI will likely end this world in a long list of fucked up ways, I don't think it's worth it

Until then, I'll use it as a suggestion tool, not much more

  • Not everyone lives in the US, though

And it won't matter, I wouldn't buy one because the Chinese government, like the US government, is evil as fuck and wants to control every fucking move of every fucking person

But having said all that: I still don't believe this crap either because big claims require big evidence, to put it very simple

  • I'd hope that too but this is the real world and it sucks. More and more, everything must be to apease those in charge, those with money and power and things like VPN gives us alternatives, so yeah.. And yes, I've heard the first proposals to ban VPNs, to "protect the children or course" (fuck the children, nobody cares about the well being of children, it's all money and power) and I'm sure those first bans fail, they will just try again next year and the year after etc. until they win.

They only need a single win and we can't make a law to prohibit this shit behavior apparently

I've seen similar processes at work for encryption for the past 20 years or so. Every one or two years they try again, and again, at some point they'll succeed just for sheer statistical probably

So enjoy while it lasts, I'm getting out of it what I can, while I can

  • Oh I know, and I'm not worried about the guy trying this in his pool

I'm worried about the idiot who thinks this too will work for a 30 meter dive, because there is always THAT guy who knows it all

  • Yeah, also not a great country for many reasons

  • When the two women met, Andriano said she had just been visited by a private investigator – a man in his 60s, who had heard she was talking to someone about a book. In a restaurant that afternoon, Osborne-Crowley was approached by a man in his 60s. What was she writing, he wanted to know. He offered her drugs, cash and a meeting with one of Epstein’s pilots, then put his hands under her skirt. When the manager asked him to leave, he waited in the car park; Osborne-Crowley had to escape through a staff exit.

What the actual fuck am I reading here? The guy just walks up to a woman in a restaurant and sexually assaults her, people saw that happening, and he is only asked to leave?

Like, nobody thought it good to just slam this guy's head to the table and keep him there until police had arrived to arrest him?

  • Yep, better have a narco state, then

  • Yeah, the USA is had and we all know that Putin is our friend who would never do anything to hurt anybody!

Come on dude, don't be THAT naive

  • This is just a rand claiming this with literally zero evidence?
