        in the UK they weigh the baggage area and if you don’t scan something it’ll shout “UNEXPECTED ITEM IN THE BAGGAGE AREA” as loud as the mf beep and you get publicly shamed by all the whiter than white old people.

        anyone who puts bags outside the weighing area gets looked at too, there’s no real way round without going for the old pockets

            Certain grocery chains in Canada employ these types of self checkout scanners. Every item is weighed, your bags need to be on the scale from the start and there’s a camera over each checkout.

            Yes you do have to put your bag in a special place. If you dont, and the item you scanned (which they already know much it weighs) wont add to the total weight of the scales and it won’t let you scan another item or pay.

            It’s effectively impossible to accidentally steal something.

        at the wm here, if you even look at the scanner cross-eyed, it sounds the alarms and halts the register until the babysitter can come over, review the footage and unlock it. if anything passes anywhere in the cameras’ very wide fov and a scan isn’t registered… anything… it stops.

        they got sam’s club-like checkers at the exits, now, too. anything not in a bag gets ‘checked’… at least that’s what we’ve concluded is their criteria, based on when we have been stopped trying to leave.

        me thinks they’ve had a slight uptick in ‘customer-applied discounts’ lately.

      Your local Kroger isn’t robbing you. Neither are their suppliers in general, but even so you are not punishing them by shoplifting. The store already paid the producer for it regardless of whether the item is sold or stolen, meaning they don’t care either way.

      If you want to steal, that’s your prerogative, but don’t pretend that you’re morally justified to take out your frustrations on someone unrelated.

          Yeah they went from like 1-2% to like 5%… Which for a grocery store is insane and I precedented. Normal grocery stores have never been good profits. In 100 years they all basically barely break even

          So to see them actually turn a profit is fucking unheard of

          A few specialists grocery stores have better margins but it’s rare.

              The bad news is Kroger isn’t everywhere.

              The good news is you don’t actually have to go to a Kroger.

              You can go to any of: Bakers, City Market, Dillons, Food4Less, frys, Foods Co, Fred Myer, Gerber Market, Harris Market, Jay C, King Super, Mariano’s, Metro Market, PayLess, QFC, Ralphs, Ruler Foods, or Smith’s food and drug, and steal from them.

          Whatever a “Kroger” might be

          Kroger is a supermarket chain in much of the US, but some of their stores use different branding. I just meant it to be a recognizable example of somewhere you might get your groceries.

          And I’m not frustrated, it’s not about the money, it’s the principle.

          When I said frustrated, I meant in a general sense about the economy, as in higher grocery prices. But I guess I did misunderstand your motivation for this. So it’s not about how much suppliers/stores are actually charging, just that they raised prices at all? And you view that as stealing?

          Someone in the chain did raise prices for items I can’t boycott, I don’t care who.

          And I guess that’s the problem in my eyes. If you intend to punish someone, it should be focussed on whoever is responsible. I’m sure you would agree it is unreasonable to yell at a cashier when your card gets declined for example. I’m also skeptical that you can’t boycott, but without specifics I’ll have to take your word for it.

          Also I don’t need justification. To whom should I justity? to you? lol.

          I judged you because you shared this with other people on the thread, which I view as inviting feedback. But you are right that my opinion isn’t important. What matters is that you can justify your actions to yourself. Whatever your morals are, I doubt it includes indiscriminate punishment. Maybe ask yourself things like, “What would it be like if everyone acted the way I do?” or “Will this lead to things getting better or worse?”.

      Makes sense, although at the same time the price of things you buy is based on the cost with theft factored in already. More thefts mean they would have to adjust the calculation and prices go up to cover it. I don’t know how far that goes, 99% theft and the 1% spending £50 on a loaf of bread?

      Part of it depends what someone is stealing, if its a bag of potatoes or some bread, you are probably desperate. If its a 4k TV I don’t have that same sympathy.

        Prices go up more when inflation goes up, and they go up again when inflation goes down. Then they go up again because of war, or tariffs, or because of fuck the poor.

        Theft is far far down the list of reasons to raise prices.

    Retail staff are trained to let you go, we’re not security, we can’t stop you, a manager might try but just be confident and walk with intent and you’ll be fine.

      Yeah it’s like when you’re leaving a store whose manager sucks and instituted receipt checking.

      Youre trying to leave and there’s this big line of people getting checked. You can just leave. People seem happy to sheep along but you can just leave.

      Many years ago now I bought some shitty furniture at a target (I think it was a desk chair or something) and I refused to acknowledge the receipt checker so they followed me to my car at which point I just lied and told them I’d thrown it away after I left the store. Of the two of us, the other guy was the only one who might get in trouble.

    Much more sustainable to shoplift a little bit at once. Steal like 1 item when you buy 10, make it something small. Oops, it just slid under something in your bag. Don’t make it the most expensive item of your shop.

      In my area the self checkout systems at the grocery store often fritz out an don’t register the item. This is even after they beep. It’s truly wonderful. I consistently get 50% or more of the items in my cart for free. Nothing they can do to me either. They have me on video scanning every item. If their system buggers up the total it’s on them.

      If they want somebody to catch computer errors then there’s a thing called “pay a employee.”

      I’m not saying this is moral or anything, but if you buy something expensive, then you could theoretically go back to the store with the receipt, pick another of that thing from the store, and go to the register and tell them you want to return it.

      I have been homeless. You do what you need to survive.

          That’s my reasoning too. In fact, I wouldn’t care if a giant chain would go under because I stole bread and sausages, I am not going to just lie down and die because society says so.

          I literally got caught doing that one time. I was in a really bad spot. I never stole for money or to resell, or for value like, I always went for food I was actually going to eat, and I even avoided the pricier brands because I didn’t want to be an asshole- I just wanted to survive, you know.

          I grabbed a few smoked dried sausages and some bread, and went outside and ate them. Two plain clothes cops came up to me, “Where’d you get that?”, I was like, “This is my lunch”, and they said, “So, you didn’t nick that from the store right now?”, and I sat there silent for a moment and said, “Well… I’m not saying I did, but if I did say I nicked it from the store right now, what would theoretically happen to me?”, and the guy looked at me and the meager meal I had scrounged and said “let’s go”.

          We went back into the store, and he went up to the cash register, and paid for my meal out of his own pocket. Then he motioned for us to leave, and then, as if he caught himself remembering that he needed to “do” something, he looked at the cashiers and then back at me and yelled at me- “AND DON’T DO IT AGAIN!”. But we were all good.

          Best cop interaction of my life. If anything, I have never felt worse about stealing, because his pity really hit home to me how bad shape I was really in that time…

      Also don’t do it AT the register. Those cameras are much closer and better than the cameras pointing down the aisles. Sure, you can say you made a mistake, voiding the ‘intent’ of the crime, but you’re much more likely to get caught and banned.

        Worth noting that Target is known for making a profile on lifters. They wait you til you hit a threshold for a felony. The repeated behavior makes the intent clear as well.

      I’ve literally seen people just walk out with a cart full of shit. Employees chasing and yelling but nothing comes of it.

      Depends on where you are but where I’m at they don’t go after anyone for this.

      It’s sad because everything is getting locked up or they just close locations.

    I recently saw a clip of a video where a girl was working checkout at Walmart and the person just pushed their cart through the checkout and walked out the store with it and she was just like, well, whatever.

    I know everyone here says that this is somewhat safe because the employees are told not to interfere. But what you really need to worry about is the store building a case against you across multiple instances of shoplifting, and then reporting you to the police as soon as you’ve stolen a felony amount.
