I got curious about how bad Hexbear was according to sh.itjust.works and told myself “i should document it and make a post about it if it’s really that bad”

It was about 6 months into the covid crisis. I was browsing the chapotraphouse subreddit through a VPN while on the clock. It was one of my favorite subreddits because it was one of the only places which was completely uncritical in its support for the George Floyd uprising (the true reason for the ban, in my opinion). It got banned while I was reading it. A couple hours later, I was called to a meeting and told I was being furloughed because of the pandemic-induced economic standstill. In the meantime, someone set up a “lifeboat” discord server. Within a day or two, about 10,000 people ended up there from the 140,000 subscribers to the subreddit. I joined a group of a dozen or two people who decided to grab Lemmy, an emerging Fediverse platform (which was very bare-bones at the time and did not even support federation yet), kick the tires, and do what we could to make it suitable for such a chaotic situation. About a month later, we got chapo.chat online. We had dubbed our bespoke Lemmy fork “Hexbear.” Eventually, the site name and domain was changed to match when we decided the community had much broader interests than just a podcast.

Similar to you, but the reddit version “Wow, people sure hate these chapotraphouse leftists but won’t go into any consistent details as to why. I’m going to see for myself.”

Everyone said they were awful but the memes kept making a lot of sense to me so I went to askchapo with a few questions. Anyway I’m a communist now

Straight up some comment on Bluesky mentioned it amongst all the recent bans. So far it seems like the kind of old internet vibes I enjoyed about early reddit and digg with a progressive focus. Very cool.

Last time we got mentioned on Bluesky, like 40 people joined and half of them got immediately banned for not following the rules lol.

Welcome and hopefully things go better this time.

I’m gonna chip in as an admin and say a bunch of the people that joined alongside that blyausky wave at the time were right-wing infiltrators trying to take advantage of the the onshoring of new members to try and “raid” the site.

Needless to say, unlike Aosky, we took care of every right-wing anti-trans troll by swiftly taking every single one of them behind a barn to admire the secret flower garden we grow back there just for them.

I was thinking of the person who posted an introduction full of slurs against LGBTQ+ people who was totally genuine in trying to “reclaim” them and got banned within like 2 minutes lol.

A lot of people didn’t really understand this doesn’t function like Twitter/Bluesky either and isn’t really well built to do like art (some erotic) commissions. They were posting their real names and other social links.

Some people DID read the rules and threw a fit about having to content warning their leather kink posts and so never made accounts in the first place.

            Interesting time.

I used to be on the chapo sub but missed the lifeboat discord when it got banned. I finally left reddit when they broke the apps that worked, tried a couple other lemmys, then encountered hexbear when it was briefly federated with blahaj.zone and switched over here when they defedded.

    ::: cw suicide

    spoiler

I was a member of a $u!c1d£ forum, looking for someone to help me un@l!v£ myself. Mainly due to extreme poverty and starvation after my disability benefits were stopped. People kept making pacts with me, then letting me down. I ended up completely penniless and starving and tried to sell my prescription medications on the site as I had nothing else to sell. I got banned for that but right before I got banned someone there told me about hexbear’s mutual aid and said I should ask for help there, that’s how I found this site. And this place has kept me alive for months, both with food and friendship. I didn’t have anyone to talk to in real life as everyone abandoned me when I got sick.

While editing your comment highlight the entire text and press the spoiler button, replacing the second spoiler with cw suicide

Here is a screenshot of where to find the spoiler button.

CW: suicide, CWs for sexual violence/drugs/transphobia

The post body more than the word suicide, the drop-down spoiler tag allows people to choose to engage with the given topic and protects users’ mental health

This is particularly important so that people with the related trauma aren’t triggered into re-experiencing that trauma and to prevent the vulnerable people on the site from relapsing into suicidal ideation or planning

The site asks for the same CWs for sexual violence and transphobia, the warning contains the word but the drop-down spoiler tagging allows people the choice to engage with comments that discuss or describe it, or choose not to read something that would be triggering for them.

Inadvertently stumbling upon descriptions of suicide, sexual violence, or other things like drugs can be very stressful, traumatic or even dangerous for users, so giving other community members to choice to engage is a necessary part of creating and maintaining safe and inclusive spaces.

The same way from .world. I was horrified, it was from Chapotraphouse but I was curious enough to stay and like it.
