just came to this site after getting banned off reddit… it has some nice features… BUT idk if i understand it correctly or not. i’m on lemmy.zip, if a subreddit on here isn’t bundled with together with my lemmy server will i not see it? will i still be able to interact with it? curious how it works.
View all, not local. Keep in mind that if your admin is a nutter, they will defederate instances and you wont see them.
If you don’t want to see a instance or community or user you can personally block them. Dont rely on your admin to curate your feed IMO, do it yourself. but you do you.
Youre in charge of your own account. Welcome fellow lemminator. Peace.
are there ELI5 videos for all this stuff that you said about curating and admins cause Im super new too and am curious about all this. Please suggest something if you can.
leminator
I thought we were lemmings
All the different lemmys (by default) will show up for all the others. Though some lemmy servers block specific other ones from syncing with their instance. Notably the tanky-heavy lemmy instances tend to get blocked.
If you go over to hexbear (a lemmy instance), you will hear significantly more people tell you Russia invading their neighbors in wars of conquest is good, actually.
interesting. thank you. when i was on reddit i would go to r/debate r/changemyview and subreddits like that where i could have discussions. are there lemmy subreddits for debates cause i’m not really finding any. thanks for the reply. on the plus side, of the two comments i left on lemmy they both got replies, so i was glad it wasn’t like twitter where you leave a comment on a large post and nobody interacts with 99% of your comments there. that’s nice and part of what i liked about reddit. good to know lemmy has people replying to each other here too.
Sure, you might be better on Lemmy.world as it’s kinda everything. I believe zip is more tech and stuff.
If you got global banned for no reason from Leddit (“no reason” being “you broke no listed rules”) then you’ll wind up global banned for no reason twice as fast on this amazing alternate website I assure you
it seems like half the people here are here from being banned off reddit though.
There’s actually a surprising number of people who still use both. People who feel they’ve been wronged are usually pretty vocal about it. I’m not saying they’re exaggerating or lying or anything either, mind you, just pointing out that’s the way the human mind works. Capital One pissed me off and I told everyone who would listen for like a decade after, but no one really volunteers info about uneventful relationships.
true.
I wasn’t banned, I just left. FYI.
Because Leddit actually requires a bit of effort to return on a new account without it being instabanned which many people don’t understand how to get around, whereas this platform is fundamentally fucked with the ‘instance’ signups and getting banned doesn’t mean squat
my preference 🤩
Same, this shit is garbage though so it doesn’t really matter tbh
Not true in my totally banned from Reddit but enjoyed on lemmy experience
Not true until the lemmy.world staff disagree with you :)
Fuck you spez and your goddamn AI powered moderation, you sniveling motherfucker.
Reddit only gained traction when digg fucked itself. This AI shit may (finally) be the second shoe dropping
Yes absolutely, I was one of those people that left digg for reddit.
Reddit is a shit show… can I say that!?
I got banned and I see weird posts and replies that is obviously Ai slop.
My friend and I got shadow banned. We have no idea why!?
It used to be good… the future is not reddit.
Ps: I apologize for farting while typing this comment.
They put AI moderators in charge and I have a feeling they’re whittling their own userbase down and that that might be having an effect on their stocks too.
Lol if they trained an AI on their own moderators, it’s no surprise that they moderate in an arbitrary kind of way.
the problem is that the majority of redditor moderators and admins act in ways that are very arbitrary when it comes to their banning of certain comments ,posts or ideologies . So if the humans doijng the job do the job in borderline nonsensical ways…how would the AI fair in such things?
The reasom why AI works well in a coffee maker is because its very straight forward to make different caffeinated beverages in straightforward ways. Just follow the recipe as long as you have the ingredients and equipment. Simple.
But when it comes to humans communicsting ideas? There has never been a perfect recipe for any of it and there probably wont be ever. Sometimes a person is literally a natsee but the way they communicate it is through half-way phrases and dogwhistles and its harder to sniff out if this oerson is being malicious or not and sometimes a person is communicating a great idea
Let me give you an example of something that I think demonstrates the nonsensicalness of reddit ai modding due to its lack of complex understanding. I was on this one subreddit and we were talking about a crime that broke headline news and some natsees started brigading the post and saying absolutely awful things. I reported and replied to many of the natsee comments. But suddently I got banned from thate subreddit forever and I looked for the reason why… I was banned because my reply to a nat see had the word ‘Black’ in it. …I simply replied to the natsee that ‘I am a Black man’ and Im guessing the AI saw me commenting ‘Black’ and automatically thought I was making a derogatory comment…
That’s not even AI in a coffee maker, that’s just… a coffee maker XD
Anyway, this 100%, you make great points.
wait , I thougut that modern coffee makers ‘read’ the instructions on those little modern coffee packets and it uses AI to understand the instructions to make different types of coffees in different types of ways. Am I wrong?
Fuck reddit. I hope that site dies soon and we can go back to not having everything locked inside a single site.
I miss forum signatures. It’s weird, but those were always so fun to me.
Hopefully Twitter, Discord, and the entirety of Meta platforms/services goes along with it…would be a beautiful day.
," he said, from a completely different site where he can express such an opinion.
Just giving you crap, I get it. Also, Lemmy is small. It’s a good start, but we need more growth and maturity. :)
I got banned permanently for simple giving my opinion to a maga supporter. That should tell you as much. Fuck Reddit
At least you had a chance to mouth off. I Got banned by a fucking automod glitch and I cant even report it because their ban evasion bot sends you into an automatic ban loop for any account you make.
Didnt even break any rules, they just rely on AI tools to do what should be human work and here we are.
AI destroyed Reddit. Probably will here too soon
I got banned for making a crude joke about Kanye West and being surprised he hadn’t murder/suicided himself and Kim or Taylor yet, it was on topic for the conversation not at random, the reason given was “insighting violence” - for who?? Is Kanye personally reading my comments?? I was a power user with hundreds of thousands of post and comment karma too… their loss imo
That’s why you keep all your options open. ;-)
Stock will bounce back. Reddit will not learn, because it knows that it just needs to change its game and enshittify more. It’s too late.
I still waste some time there, but I come here for discussion. Although Lemmy needs growth and maturity. But it’s still better already.
Lemmy was a ghost town last time I visited, it’s actually viable to leave reddit now because discussions are reasonably active. Also you’re way less likely to be talking to an LLM which is nice.
How do you know threre are fewer LLM and other bad actors etc. here? What if they specifically focus on making it shitty here to stay in power? Seeing what kind of crap gets posted here… not exactly better. Some unhinged comments/people/communities are also not exactly great, but I guess there really are people like that.
LLM slop might be cheap to produce at scale, but why would you bother doing that to influence the 13.3k active users per month on this instance (which is one of the larger ones) when reddit, insta, facebook etc exist? Also Lemmy’s recommendation algorithm doesn’t amplify the spam to potentially millions even if they were here, so it’s not a particularly productive place to be spamming.
Also reddit probably isn’t deliberately keeping Lemmy down, we’re a small decentralised community of people motivated for whatever reason to go down a route other than the default approach. That kind of temperament is necessary for some portion of society to have, but it’s also prone to creating splitting and drama. Lemmy’s problems I feel are largely of its own making, but it’s way better than it was and personally I think there’s quite a high ceiling on slow, sustainable growth. Reddit are even kind enough to drip-feed a stream of new users to us through their clown show approach to running the place.
i’m here now
Reddits inevitable demise is pending. So many posts are just garbage now. AI slop, rage bait, engagement bait, every comment is some stupid fucking joke, no one is serious anymore, etc. In the science sub you used to get banned for not being serious, now it’s all just one shitty joke after another.
Uh…they kicked everyone off …

you deserve a reply and i found this funny so i’m saving this
It ended with r/all
I humbly disagree. It ended with the admins not supporting mods, caring about numbers more than people, encouraging memes over discussion (not encouraging memes at all, just OVER DISCUSSION which is what made reddit great).
Reddit got gud, then spent a decade fucking over everyone chasing that money.
But if they had taken care of their mods and their users, they could hvae that money AND not be shitty. But alas…
But /r/all? Just meant I could see stuff from every subreddit and find places that deserved my time and attention. I disagree with ya. heh
Google licensed Reddit’s content to improve AI-generated search summaries. Those summaries frequently answer users’ questions by drawing from Reddit discussions without requiring users to click through to Reddit itself. The arrangement generates licensing revenue, but it may also reduce opportunities to convert casual visitors into engaged, logged-in users who ultimately become more valuable advertising customers.
lol, yeah, that was a predictable outcome.
I dunno, we already knew the reddit answer without clicking in and it was “why don’t you google this yourself”.
Those summaries frequently give wrong answers.
All reddit ever needed to do was leave it’s users alone and build a functional in house search…
Like, there was a solid decade when I needed to figure something out, I’d search Google and tell it to only provide results from reddit.
If they had licensed a search engine like Google, they’d really have been “the front page of the internet”.
It was that fucking easy, instead they did the opposite and let Google use their data without anyone going to reddit or probably understanding the info came from reddit.
They are also increasingly banning anyone and any sub that is “controvercial.”
Yeah, I was permanently banned a few weeks ago. It’s what brought me back to lemmy.
Lol ya I got permabanned for inciting violence for saying I’d be fine with someone doing it in private after some guy was like “the Canadians want us to assassinate him in public. They just won’t say it.” Lol I’ll say it motherfucker!!!
Now the only difference is you use duckduckgo with reddit appended
You might…
We must cannibalise long term sustainability for short tern quarterly growth! It is the only way.
Spez thought he could make it relevant on its own before the clock ran out on the deal.
I may seem full of myself but requiring a login drastically reduces educated people existing in reddits ecosystem. I’m completely done with it and have moved back to forums for most things. This shift is the final nail in reddits decade old coffin imo.
Short-term profits were great tho! Who cares about the future? Certainly not the asshole called spez
If spez would’ve started an askreddit thread about the pros and cons of licensing user content to google he probably would’ve gotten a preview of how much he’d be on the short end of the stick
Didn’t it happen around IPO?
One could theorise it was done to boost forward projections at that specific time of the company’s lifecycle
Reminds me of that vc fraud article
To be fair the other options was Google just using reddit content without there permission, like every other service, and not getting payed at all.
The fact that I’ve been a Reddit user for 17 years and I’m reading this on Lemmy says a lot about what Reddit has become.
I was a reddit user for 15+ years… I got perma banned a bit ago. Part of me misses it. But… Whatever.
I got perma banned after Roe v Wade for criticizing the security theater surrounding SCOTUS. My account was primarily D&D homebrew. I can’t even go back to delete my posts…
Im lying if I said I wouldnt still be commenting there if the automod hadnt bugged out on me and created an unwarranted ban evasion death loop but the rage-engagement algorithm on reddit is becoming more and more apparent. I was never seeing actually good content from the subs I liked, i was only ever getting posts from the same handful of subreddits and only the shit that got the most comments.
Like not even good posts from those popular ones, ONLY the ones that were baiting people… and every municipal sub feels like a fuckiny psyop now. Any hot button issues and you get inundated by insane takes from obviously fake accounts that (before they removed viewable history) would just be coasting from sub to sub posting on the same topics (homelessness, trans rights, womens rights, immigration, etc)
Considering my first ever account years ago got banned for “report abuse” for reporting a comment about alleged jewish space lazers causing the hawaii fires… I think theyre relying hard on AI tools in the background that arent doing what theyre supposed to.
I created my Reddit account in 2011, I deleted all my posts and stopped posting/commenting when they blocked 3rd party apps from using the free APIs and I am considering of setting up some sort of filtering to block it out of my search results since it doesn’t work without being signed in.
Reddit is dead for me
Yep, my account was 14 years old and I got banned for the most innocuous post that I thought that it was a joke. Don’t miss Reddit at all. It’s like getting kicked out of a fire.
I had my first account in 2006 I believe. By even 2010 Reddit was becoming kind of shit.
Honestly, I don’t want to blame reddit entirely. The entirety of the internet has gotten progressively worse and worse and worse over the past 20 years. At this point I’m ready to nuke the whole experiment.
I wish we could go back to the web of the 2000s.
Golden age for sure. It was the wild West but so fucking fun. Every web page was creative and unique. Every community felt special. Now we’re all just funneled into these prefab “experiences” on these billionaire owned corpo platforms. It’s so dystopian.
You can’t open a damn thing without getting bombarded by ads. Corporations own the internet now.
“We value your privacy and security, but please provide every tiny piece of personal data, including when you had your last shit”.
I got permabanned for saying something bad about Elon and now I’m here. Don’t really miss reddit much. In a way they did me a favor.
I’ve been there for 16 years, but I have the same observation.
I don’t know how many years I was on there but I was pretty active. The combo of killing 3rd party apps and selling everyone’s comments to AI was what made me nuke my account.
it’s as though Reddit is actively encouraging it’s user base and potential new users to not use the site. The search results encourage that. “here’s the answer from reddit, don’t worry, you don’t need to go there” or “you prefer old.reddit? welp you gotta sign up for that now!” or the search field that just doesn’t search the actual subreddit you’re in “you want to search for a specific window manager on unixporn? nope, here’s a result from a subreddit about cleaning windows”
Also watch your tongue on reddit! if you criticize ANYTHING that reddit has vested interest in you get a ban.
The site should be studied as a textbook example of enshitification
It’s the ultimate short term profit strategy squeeze the user experience, cash out on data licensing deals with AI companies, and act surprised when people stop showing up.
That’s been the modern world for the last 40 years. Durability is nothing compared to next-quarter profits, because if something starts to shit the bed you just move your money to something that hasn’t been ruined yet, and then make even more money ruining it.
I’m pretty sure they just see themselves as an AI training database with an annoying website attached they have to keep online to make it look like they still care
Good. Hopefully reddit will get worse and drive more people to Lemmy.
I dont mean to be rude but…do we want them here? I kinda think its good as is. Sure we get some people but its been nice lately.
It’d be nice to have extremely niche communities that are active. I just don’t want to have bot accounts or paid propagandists on Lemmy like what Reddit currently has.
Exactly. We need a few more people. But not the bots, spam and B’s of reddit.
Yeah. The Facebookification of reddit is one of the things that killed it. If you make it too easy to access and use, you get more noise than signal, like people asking the same questions over and over, or cheap jokes in the comments that drown out useful ones.
I think the people that find it here are probably decent. It’s really just when money gets involved that the vultures start circling. I guess time will tell how the fediverse experiment goes
Given how we successfully resisted threads’ EEE attempt, I’d say it’s going well so far
While Reddit is getting shittier by the minute, just an FYI: you can still search within a sub even if the sub tag is missing from the search bar. You need to type “subreddit:name-of-sub your-keywords”, e.g. “subreddit:funny cute dog”. I still use Reddit, because however shitty, there’s a lot of good info on it that I can’t find anywhere else (niche stuff or smaller communities). I do use a 3rd party Android client most of the times, though.
There’s still a working 3rd party client? Which one(s)? I thought they killed them all off…
You can just use a browser.
I used Joey for the longest time, but didn’t feel too comfortable using an app that’s abandoned, so I switched to Continuum.
The site should be studied as a textbook example of enshitification
Exactly. Also the reason why they we’re pushing so hard to switch to new UI is that the design of the old one made it much harder to enshitify[1].
BTW: I like Lemmy and all, but I wish Usenet could become popular again. I feel like Reddit contributed somewhat to its demise to became that replacement of it.
[1] I mean in the sense to milk profit at the cost of degrading user experience, not to just to make it bad for the sake of making it bad. You can always make things worse.
Usenet. Now, there’s a bit of the old web I haven’t thought about for a very long time…
textbook example of enshitification
Textbook example of capitalism
People need to stop fucking acting like enshitification is a separate thing just because it has a catchy name.
Every example of “enahitification” is the normal and inevitable result of our economic system.
It is not some weird fringe aspect we can stop, it is what always happen with unregulated capitalism.
And the reason this is important enough to keep attempting to explain to people who blindly use buzzwords:
We need everyone to understand capitalism isn’t going to work
Enshittification is what people say when they have no level of marxist analysis
I’ve always thought of the term as a specific tactic of venture capitalism not as something separate. Maybe that’s not the norm, but it’s how it is used in spaces I frequent online.
monopolies are not the only end result of capitalism, they are a common end result but if the barriers to enter the market are low enough and the incumbent corps don’t engage in regulatory capture it generally doesn’t happen.
On a long enough timeline it ends with a single company.
Because of vertical integration and a large company’s ability to operate at a loss in a specific slice to drive out any competition so they can raise prices.
If you have questions I can try to explain further.
If you’re just going to keep saying wrong things, I’m going to quickly get tired of explaining and just leave you to be wrong.
look at farms and how you can get tomatoes from a large number of suppliers, if the number of suppliers goes down anyone can become a new supplier.
Not every supplier needs to be competitive on price.
No…
More Perfect Union have some good videos on that.
A small producer can’t meet contract requirements for commercial grocery stores and can’t just sell tomatoes individually.
But like I said if you’re just going to spout uninformed opinions and hope someone takes pity and attempts to explain it to you, you’re gonna have to find someone else, I won’t even see any other false statements you make, so there’s no way I can point out all the ways you’re wrong again.
you absolutely can sell tomatos to individuals, or eat them yourself.
