The "vote blue no matter who" people are the exact neoliberals who got us Trump in the first place. What's the point of voting blue if you're going to get another pro-elite, pro-capitalism, anti-working class political party? The "vote blue no matter who" people also happen to never talk about ranked choice voting or any other voting system that can get us out of this two party system because the elite benefit from that very system.
"Vote blue no matter who" is a psyop by the corporate and political elites trying to resist the working class from eating away at even a modicum of their vast amount of power.
Correct. That is what forward secrecy is. That way, if a malicious/state actor gains access to your account, they won't be able to see your previous messages. If you cross-sign by verifying the new device with an old device, you will be able to decrypt those old messages.
This only applies to encrypted chats. Unencrypted chats' and rooms' history will be able to be accessed regardless.
Crypto doesn't have the same consumer protections as centralized cards, though. You can't dispute a fraudulent transaction with crypto, as every transaction, much like cash, is permenant and irreversable. That and crypto also has a negative connotation with scams, as it is very commonly used to scam people.
The technology and the idea of a decentralized currency is cool, and with cryptos like Monero, can even mean private transfers of money across the internet, but it also has its flaws.
I do think blockchain technology has its uses, though, for example, with government elections, although in that case, individual clients can be compromised, and there is a high amount of incentive for malicious actors to do so.
And that is ignoring the many issues with proof of work and its power usage.
I've been using Matrix for over a decade. It has its problems with stability, but it's getting better over time, especially with the newer Matrix 2.0 and Element X clients.
Open source (clients and server)
Federated
Self hostable
Optional E2EE for rooms, and I believe by default for PMs/DMs, along with forward secrecy
Integration and bridging with other services, although it's not as seamless as I would like
Has group calling/VC, but I don't use that enough to judge how good it is. Should also be able to integrate with Jitsi Meet as an alternative.
Supports Spaces similar to Discord "servers", but not as seamless as Discord. Each room (equivalent to a Discord channel) is its own separate thing.
If an alternative isn't open source and doesn't support federation and E2EE, I wouldn't even consider it.
I think Jitsi Meet can do screen sharing, but that's a separate platform from Matrix dedicated to video calls, although I think Matrix clients can integrate with it IIRC.
Here is a GPL licensed one that was forked before the license change. Not as feature rich, but definitely still a quality emulator: https://github.com/Trixarian/duckstation-gpl
Last time we had a political party "think about the children", they ended up in the Epstein files. That sentiment is also what spawned numerous global laws eroding online privacy and promoting censorship not just for children, but for adults.
If you want to shelter your children, then do your job as a parent instead of relying on the government and tech companies to do it for you.
Also implying that people who don't have kids are not entitled to political opinions is a really classy move.
Any emulator that supports PGXP, which is most of them. Duckstation is the one most people recommend, but that one has weird licensing issues and a dev who loves to start drama.
