There is nothing wrong with denouncing American plutocrats like Bezos and Gates for greed, but we cannot stop there: we must understand that the system of exploitation is not held together by any individual’s vices. As Lenin put it, “The capitalists divide the world, not out of any particular malice, but because the degree of concentration which has been reached forces them to adopt this method in order to obtain profits.” [10] If one of them had a major change of heart and stopped pursuing ruthless accumulation, they would quickly be ousted by stockholders for endangering their investment. In the unlikely event that their stockholders were cooperative, a competitor would swoop in and relieve them of their commanding market share. This is not apologia for Bezos, but we need to understand that there is a talent to being a capitalist exploiter, or else we will underestimate our enemy. The market selects for profitability, and it selects well — it just doesn’t select for environmental responsibility or decency or who can bring the most benefits to the greatest number.

Love how there is no mention of homelessness or severe poverty. They don’t get a mention, but the return of the middle class did!

Even in a fantasy of direct divine (or Death Note) intervention, the best liberals can hope for is a reversion to their view of the 90s.

Elon Musk dies on October 15 2026 at 1:31 pm by way of a suicide vest triggered while standing next to the most expensive components of the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery.

One of its rules was it couldn’t puppet someone into doing something that would (or could?) injure or kill someone else, so puppeting someone to procure explosives or destroy something that could hurt other people would be out. Industrial sabotage via death note would have to be targeted at people operating machinery who could be made to break it in a non-dangerous way.

Although that raises questions about what happens if it targets someone whose wellbeing and active participation in something is required to not cause a disaster. Does it just speed up or delay the default heart attack fallback to before or after the critical window? It’s being administered by death gods as I understand it, so creatively trying to work around its rules seems like it would just get countermanded by them.

I’d like to imagine they’d see my requests for “US sailor: Death by Shahed-136” and be like “Good god more death in a war zone? Fuck it, why not?”

And then a Shahed-136 slams into a US capitol ship.

Although they’d probably start getting suspicious when the same general request keeps being made.

            Alternatively: Small gas line explosions.

Maintenance worker’s will is bent and she does an “oopsie”, gets killed, and then takes a gas line out. Repeat general idea for other infrastructure.

Again the evil japan death spirits would start getting suspicious as to why there’s dozens of these similar requests lol.

what this unbribable authority does is impose a limit on the stomach of the capitalist

Weber paraphrases Marx as appreciating that “the limits to the exploitation of the feudal serf were determined by the walls of the stomach of the feudal lord.” Under capitalism, on the other hand, we have profit-oriented commodity production. This means that neither “stomach walls” nor any other kind of natural limit impose themselves: accumulation can be infinite, and since everything is tradeable with everything else, the capitalist not only can but must (in order to compete) accumulate without limit. Growth for the sake of growth, a growth that is indifferent to what kind of work anybody actually does.

They love “apolitical” (depoliticized) solutions, which is why even in their sad fantasy of mostly progressive-ish change they still need to both sides it because not left or right but forward or whatever.

I thought that was because they were related to the old billionaires, because the comic is so rooted in great man theory.

Anyway, it doesn’t really change much, because a person with $999 million still has effectively unlimited money.

as if billionaires ever had a billion dollars directly, it’s all wealth index based on speculation on their properties. It’s make believe.

I mean it includes a subclause where anyone who becomes billionairsz after them also explodes. Sure that’s not a socialist recolution, but I sure wouldn’t mind.

pure, undiluted great man of history the present.

i’ve outlined this story in multiple forms, the conclusion i always come to is that the deaths would be absorbed by the capitalist media machine, the corporations would just obfuscate responsibility even harder than they already do, and there would be a narodnik-style backlash (not that any of that means that the protagonist was wrong, mind you)
