The Civ series has slowly had any social commentary filed off. You don’t even get global warming anymore.

(They have gotten better at representing non-European people as having civilizations, though.)

Changsha has a stone monument to Mao Zedong who was born nearby, but stone was mined elsewhere and then assembled here. Zhengzhou has an actual stone carving of two mythical emperors that traditionally represent the “founding fathers” of Chinese civilisation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yan_Huang_Zisun

Maybe it is just because it isn’t as weathered, but that Mao statue looks way better than Mt. Rushmore.

Especially later on, he certainly had a personality cult and, while it’s not carved into a mountain, they did have big stone monuments to him:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalin_Monument_(Prague)

While I think the cult was a case of severe personal and strategic wrongheadedness on the part of Stalin and many others, I certainly would not equivocate between him or his admirers and those of especially the worse three heads on Rushmore.

The guy who carved this also carved leaders of the confederacy into a mountain in Georgia. The guy who paid him was an active Klan member.

It’s originally wasn’t even an actual US monument. Some businessman built it as a tourist trap, in fact the US government at the time thought it was tacky and stupid and didn’t want anything to do with it.

I actually never saw it from any other angle and I’m kind of relieved that it’s not as severe a defacing of nature.

If I remember correctly it’s a spiritually/culturally honored mountain so it really shouldn’t be there if anything, but hey. I thought they excavated and carved a much bigger area

Exactly, it doesn’t make any sense. A primitive civilization that, to our knowledge, didn’t even have “spice” technology to season their food. How could these primitive people build a technologically complex thing like this? What do we really know about these “founding fathers”…

      “Who” really built them?!

In true Trump fashion, they’re likely to try, but the whole thing will be so corrupt and incompetent that they’ll end up just destroying the whole thing.
