  • It is really good. Especially since it's essentially a 2020s take on the 90s EXTREME comics, but in a good way. It's so over the top and incredibly ludicrous in its look and feel, but pulls it off exceptionally well without it becoming too cringey or edgy. I enjoy that Bruce is working-class, and is an incredibly gifted engineer which makes for some awesome things that Batman can orchestrate and do. For my money Absolute Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter are still the best Absolute books, but Batman and Superman aren't too far behind.

  • Thanks! I'll keep all of that in mind. Yeah, if I need help or have a question as I play, I'll hit you up ;)

  • Sounds like that is the best way to play, there's too much to realistically learn it all at once and at that point, if you do just start studying it obsessively, it becomes more like a job or studyinf for a college exam which is not very fun. I'm just going to come at it piece by piece and use the old Dwarf Fortress mantra for now: "losing is fun!"

  • Yeah, that's what I'm finding out. For now, I'm just going to focus on playing the game and learning one or two things in detail a a time as I play and gradually building up my game knowledge.

  • Thanks for the detailed explaination, I'll definitely be refering back to your post (a lot more than likely lol).

  • Games @hexbear.net

Just got Hearts of Iron IV, I know we have more than a few players here, any good tips/tricks/guides to make it less daunting for a beginner?

  • My failed marriage? Russians. Missing sock in the dryer? Russians. Seahawks beating the 49ers? Russians. My overdrawn bank account? That's right, RUSSIANS

  • Had a good Jan overall. Finally quit booze for good this time, have almost two weeks now (as of this Saturday). Went back to only eating fruits & veggies, feeling great physically and getting my sleep schedule back on track. Kicked energy drinks the past couple of days too, was getting too much anxiety, switched to tea and feeling much better now.

Been sticking to a daily routine of getting up early and hitting the local trail with the pup for a couple of hours, feels good to be able to enjoy little things like that again after not being able to while I was drinking. Going to be looking for a new job soon, which will help my financial situation tremendously and definitely my mental health with not having to scrape by, what I have now isn't cutting it by far.

Also working on studying up on addiction and the SMART recovery program, planning on becoming a SMART Recovery meeting facilitator and possibly a recovery coach at the local mental health clinic down the line.

Overall, things are getting real positive for me, it has been a long time coming and I couldn't be happier at my progress. Only thing I need to get better at now is making a daily writing practice a habit, I want to become a professional writer but I have to really commit to taking the time to write for more than just short bursts. Other than that, things are awesome ;)

  • Ah, okay. Yeah, I live in a trailer and my fridge is so small it doesn't have drawers. I should probably invest in some tubs.

  • Thanks comrade, good to be here <3

  • Hell yeah, thanks comrade! Oh, that's awesome, I love RevLeft but never have listened to ShoelessinSouthDakota but was just thinking the other day I should be.

Sweet, that is a great idea and I already have most of those ingredients. I also like making black bean burgers which are easy peasy. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I'll definitely be around in the community, I'm deadset on staying sober and working on myself in general this time around ;)

  • Right on. That's something I was honestly thinking about doing myself since it seemed that I'd always have the freshest stuff on hand. Things like kale, cabbage, carrots and potatoes keep for a good while in the fridge, so maybe I'll just think about what I need extra to make things with those. Do you have any good recipes or tips for making tofu? I've never tried it myself.

  • What do you store veggies in then? Just on the shelf, or maybe in a glass/plastic container then?

  • vegan @hexbear.net

Just took the plunge and am wondering what tips/tricks do you have for keeping produce on hand without it spoiling before you can get to eating it?

  • SMART Recovery is a science-based, practical group support community for any recovery (not just alcohol). It is an excellent alternative for people like me that have issues with AA and other 12-Step programs (especially the god issue and many anti-science solution to alcohol/drug abuse. I've really enjoyed the meetings that I go to and love that they have practical tactics and strategies that you can employ that are a more useful way for me to combat urges and prevent relapse rather than the 12-Step rhetoric of "call your sponsor, pray or go to a meeting", which I don't find helpful at all.

  • Yeah, add me too comrade <3

  • How was your week?

Oh boy, it was rough. For the last almost two weeks I went on a drinking bender after almost a month sober and am having to detox today. Luckily I wasn't drinking as much as I have in the past so the detox is fairly mild. Still somewhat kicking myself for spending so much and the fact that I lost my phone, but I am staying positive about the future and glad that I didn't go for longer since I've had several weeks and even months at a time in the past, so eleven days is definitely an improvement.

Do you have some plans for next week?

Getting things back on track from where I was at two weeks ago. I had stopped for 26 days and was feeling real good mentally and physically. I had rejoined the YMCA and started doing yoga and was doing a lot of reading and starting to really study Marxist theory. So the plan is to get back to the YMCA and pay my membership since it was due a few days ago, go to the scifi book club at the library (reading Borne by Jeff Vandermeer which I have only a few days to finish now), get back to my long walks by the waterfront and taking the doggo down the trail and finally going back to eating vegetarian which I had finally just fully committed to for those 26 days. I'm also starting some online courses and looking for a job after being out of work for a long while finally. Basically living healthier than I have when I've been drinking. I've been trying to get my life back on track for the past year after getting a DUI at the end of 2024, it's been a long, and at times painful processes, but I finally feel like I'm coming out of it.

I'm glad I found this community today, it's very timely since today is officially my first day of sobriety for good this time. I'll keep coming around and using the community to keep myself on track and encourage others too ;)

  • The ghost of Joseph McCarthy haunts the minds of many Americans still...

  • Slop. @hexbear.net

    I Reeeally Like Slop!

  • God, the US media apparatus is so blantantly propaganistic it's a wonder that people fall for this shit. I am constantly facepalming everytime I see news from the big networks. And people have the gall to deride other places for propaganda when we are literally the most propagandized population on the planet.

  • Everytime I think of that movie I can hear that whistling theme in my head

  • Thank you for this fantastic post! I used to be something of a comparative religion nerd myself but fell out of it sometime ago but have been wanting to get back to studying again.

You seem like a good person to ask this question: what books would you recommend that try and uncover what the original Christianity movement started by Jesus was?

The one book I've found that investigates what scholars actually believe to be the authentic sayings of Jesus (or as close as they can ascertain based off of comparison of the various Gospels) is a book called "The Five Gospels: What Did Jesus Really Say? The Search for the Authentic Words of Jesus" by a group of biblical scholars that created the Jesus Seminar.

Is there any other books you'd recommend in that same vein?
