I feel like I’m the only person that plays with strength medium roll shield and shit build.

  • Me with Wing of Astel and Bastard’s Stars.

Wing of Astel is the coolest. Free, ranged energy wave attacks on R2, and the actual Ash of War just straight up fucks.

Use two of em and then I wear the Blue Warrior armor and pretend to be the blind guy that taught Melania everything she knows.

My next Int run is definitely going to be 95% Wing of Astel. So cool, so busted. Switching between the insane charge attacks and the broken af skill. I’m going to kill Radahn and rush straight to it.

Me with the Giant Hunt AoW

The star fists are objectively really, really good, but I never seem to be able to adjust to how short the range of my attacks is. I just flail in the air near my enemy instead of actually hitting them. It’s not you, star fists, it’s me :(

What’s your favorite giant Hunt stick?

It’s always fun to yeet stuff into the air :) Also Giant Hunt has really nice pierce damage.

Yeah, the range of the Star Fists takes a bit to adjust to. You need to carefully position and roll just into the right locations to punish. Also a bit of game knowledge, for example if you stand at 90° of Mohg you can’t hit him with the first charge attack, doesn’t matter how close you stand; you have to move a bit further back or forward. But really, the charge attacks are so fast, if you miss the first charge attack, you have most of the time enough time to do the second charge attack which as a bonus also goes a bit further forward.

Star Fists are so busted, I just executed Midra with them at RL1.

I absolutely love the guardian swordspear. I have no idea how it stacks up in objective terms, but I like it! The fact that I habitually go for polearms probably exacerbates my problem with fist weapons too

The Guardian’s Swordspear looks so cool. I almost switched to it in my first playthrough when it dropped, just because of how it looks.

In objective terms Guardian’s Swordspear is quite good. It’s the premier dex halberd and gets insane scaling with Keen infusion. I think Nightriders Glaive might me a bit better all around? Since it’s has longer reach, but Nightrider’s Glaive is definitely a strength weapon and doesn’t look as cool as the Swordspear.

The wide swing of the Swordspear are a bit of an antithesis of a Fist weapon ;)

I really wish the Nightrider glaive’s blade was just a liiiiiittle bit smaller. It’s a great design, but any time I use it I find myself distracted by how it looks just a bit mis-proportioned, too top-heavy. The swordspear just has that elegance to it

The one I’d really like to try is Loretta’s glaive, but I’ve actually not done Str-Int yet. And also I have to go all the way to the Haligtree to get it. At least I really like the Loretta fight though!

also the (k)nightrider glaive should come with a little red light and a robot voice that talks to me

Upon checking: Loretta’s war sickle scales slightly more with dex? Huh. Although it seems like it scales quite poorly overall. If only it worked as a catalyst

Loretta’s War Sickle is probably the purest quality-int weapon that I can think of. You should get really good damage if you invest evenly between Str/Dex/Int and you get the same moveset as the Swordspear with longer range. The only disadvantage is that you only get the non-unique Loretta’s Slash and you could just put the AoW Loretta’s Slash on the Swordspear at the beginning of the game for more or less the same experience.

Yes that’s the one I meant, but it’s just called “Greatsword”, not “Guts’ Greatsword”.

It’s the community name for that Fromsoft weapon. If you just say Greatsword it’s sometimes a bit difficult to know what you’re referring to. People call that weapon Guts’ Greatsword (sometimes abbreviated as GUGS) since DS1, because it kinda looks like Guts’ Sword from Berserk (manga).

I hear Guts referenced in relation to the Greatsword every once in a while, but I’ve been pretty active in the DS1 community on Reddit and Youtube for almost a decade now, and I definitely wouldn’t call it “the community name” for it, at least for DS1 specifically.

I heard it referenced like that especially with the abbreviation GUGS lots of times. But admittedly mostly for DS2 onwards and not that often in relation to DS1. I hear that especially often in DS3 and Elden Ring referenced as such. The Design in DS1 is a lot skinnier, maybe the name became more prevalent when the design got a bit more fleshed out?

Up until a few months ago I always thought GUGS stood for “Greatsword Ultra Greatsword” since it’s an ultra greatsword called Greatsword. Someone on here recently revealed to me that the G stands for Guts’.

What no you were right, it stands for Greatsword Ultra Greatsword. In DS3 It is called “Greatsword” but it isn’t a Greatsword, it is an ultra greatsword.

Like call it Guts or whatever, but you had do distinguish it from the greatswords because it wasnt a greatsword, it was just named “Greatsword”.

But its fine to call it guts sword because that’s obvs what they’re going for

Yeah that was what I always thought too. DS3 was my first and I was really into it shortly after all the DLC were released when it was at its peak of popularity, so I was into the community when it was super active. I probably heard someone mention the first meaning I thought it was. Or maybe I thought of it on my own and had it confirmed by someone else, I can’t remember now. That was close to a decade ago now, jeez. Can’t believe that.

Bloodborne was my first Soulsborne, but I couldn’t get into it, at first. DS3 was my first darksouls game. Its still so friggin good. Other than the lacking a jump, I still prefer it to Elden Ring. But being a late-phase Souls gamer, I find DS1 too clunky to play, and ive never tried ds2

Definitely the most stylish Katana in Elden Ring. (Sword of Night is a close runner-up)

      • I finally made a build just for the sword of night and flame the last time I played and I didn’t really like it that much. It looks awesome tho. Mostly I just hate how many stats it uses to get decent damage from scaling. I felt like it’s only super good if you build entirely around using just that one weapon, but it’s still outclassed mid to late game anyway by a lot of other straight swords.

Sword of Night and Flame is so busted and stylish, but also endlessly stat hungry. You can switch between optimizing for the Int and Faith skill by finally spending all your Larval Tears. Also only use the main weapon for trash mobs, for Boss fights it’s really all in the Skill.

I’m unsure if it is ever truly outclassed in the Straight Sword Class. Spamming Square Off or Power-stanced attacks, is a whole other play style. But you can stack so many boost, especially in the end-game, on top of the two Skills for the Sword of Night and Flame, that you one or two shot so much stuff.

Do you mean the whole Twinblade class or the Twinblade named simply Twinblade, which you can get right by the start in Elden Ring?

Do you use it two-handed or power-stanced, since you can get two Great Stars so close by? Power-stanced Great Stars looks so funny XD

Two-handed. I actually don’t think I’ve ever power-stanced them, even for a couple of swings for fun. That’s a real oversight! I’ll have to try power-stancing next time I do a playthrough!
