  • I'm looking forward to it :D

  • The steady progression of killing a little wild life to dragons to literal gods doesn't even take that long in Monster Hunter

  • I expected a lot more comments about this cow being seen as food. I'm glad there aren't 💚

I would like to pet them so hard holy shit

  • WoKe Is BaCk

  • Currently rewatching Gilmore Girls with my fiancée and we have the same reaction when there's a hint of homophobia or fat jokes in some of the jokes. We usually just give each other a look and roll our eyes but yea, it was just a different time

  • Ohr naawrr :(

  • Dude, Beast Claws are a menace. Love the nimbleness of them and the moveset is just fun. With the beast mode™ rune, they're even cooler

  • Honestly, I just picked a pic from my gallery. No clue how it got there or what it means lol

  • It is true

  • I've rarely seen that working for me, tbh

  • Well, it is

    Take your pick

  • Given Sony's track record and this recent company closure, I wouldn't trust them fully. But yea, let's hope it stays this way for the foreseeable future.

  • It's highly unlikely they ever would have let them. Looking at Sony's catalogue of first-party titles, they seem to have some say in what gets remastered here or remade there: TLOU 1/2, Days Gone, Spider-Man etc. Naturally, given Bloodborne's immense popularity, success and its recent 10-year anniversary, it'd only make sense business-wise to push out a patch for 60fps, a remaster - anything, really. However, though not officially confirmed by FS or Miyazaki himself, it's agreed upon in the community that there's likely some contractual agreement for Sony to not touch Bloodborne unless expressly told so by FS. Miyazaki has a deep love and appreciation for the game and even though Sony now has stakes in FS, they don't want to fuck over their relationship with FS by just doing whatever with the IP. Afaik, they do own the IP - it's a PlayStation-exclusive after all - but there seems to be some mutual agreement to not touch the game on their own. Fine by me, honestly. Still a shame that Miyazaki seemingly doesn't see any need to give the game a slight touch-up

opium is the opium of the people

  • Couple noteworthy quotes:

—What prompted FromSoftware, originally a business application development company, to move into home video game consoles?

Nishida: We developed specialized applications on a per-contract basis. It was tough business then, and it still is now. We had concerns that continuing down that path would lead to a shrinking market, coupled with a desire to release our own creations to the world. So it wasn't exactly a revolution for us, but we decided to try making games. The PlayStation was about to launch, and SCE was very supportive.

—You set your sights on making a full-polygon game, and an RPG at that. That was a very bold move for the time.

Nishida: We considered various ideas, but since we were going to develop for the PlayStation, we decided fairly early that it would be a polygon RPG. It was the type of challenge a first-time game developer naively takes on—a kind of ignorance, in a way. Our president said, "This game absolutely must be full polygon. We will be the first to release a full polygon RPG." But it was tough in the beginning. (laughs)

—What made you choose the fantasy genre for your first game?

Nishida: A lot of computer engineers are really into games, right? Me and the president, for instance, we were huge gamers. We'd been playing games on early computers like the Apple II since way back. So naturally, when we thought "RPG", we had a certain image in our heads and we drifted towards fantasy. We aimed to capture that feeling we enjoyed in Wizardry, but expressed through the PlayStation hardware of the time. I don't think we consciously copied Wizardry, though. (laughs)

    This one is interesting too:

—The King's Field series is known for throwing players into situations without any detailed explanation. Were you worried about how that would be received?

Nishida: We were worried, but at the same time we genuinely didn't know how people would react. We weren't expecting people to just freeze up after being dropped into the game… I mean, you can swing your sword, you'll figure it out. (laughs) Honestly, we didn't have time to make a tutorial due to the development schedule. For the first King's Field, there were parts of it that, by necessity, we had to leave somewhat unfinished, but even those parts ended up being cleverly executed in the end. However, during the development of the first King's Field, president Naotoshi Zin said he wanted to evoke a feeling of "loneliness" in players. That's why we started the game that way.

    Or this:

The lack of a linear, fixed route in the story makes progressing through the game a bit confusing, resulting in a high barrier to entry. Was this freedom and lack of constraints something you aimed for from the start?

Nishida: RPGs shouldn't inherently have rules like "you must do this." We approached it based on common sense—what feels natural. Not thinking "this is how other games do it" or "this part should be like this in a game," but rather, "this is how someone would respond if you talked to them," or "you probably wouldn't talk to a complete stranger." Starting with KFII, you can kill NPCs, but internally, monsters and NPCs share the same parameter setup. Hit points, defense, and the experience points gained upon defeat are set for every character. Ultimately, I suppose we weren't constrained by existing games.

Seems like the roots of what makes a soulslike tick are deeper than I thought. What a fun read!

  • Right, hadn't thought about late-game skill checks. Maliketh was a difficult but overall very enjoyable fight. When he goes all anime on you in his second phase, I felt a little overwhelmed oftentimes, but his attacks weren't even that hard to dodge for me, in the end, so it was fine. He's a good indicator of what's to come in the final stretch of the game, though, true!

  • True! Completely forgot about him
