Apparently Microsoft views success as Quarterly Profits, and long term planning for the future has taken a backseat.

They’ve been floundering for a while. Eliminating jobs only guarantees they’ll flounder even longer.

Long term planning in general has been on a steep decline for a long time now.

They know they’ve destroyed the planet, so why bother planning for a future they’ve already prevented.

Even when people were saying that MS turned a new leaf and that they are better at managing all the studios that they buy, and that they’ll make more better games for Game Pass to be a success, I knew that this was coming. Microsoft has been nothing but consistent in this one thing: it’ll pivot hard in one direction, pour tons of green into it, hire the best people, and then fire everyone and abandon the idea forever.

Zune, Windows Phones, Kinect, and now I guess XBOX. Well, looks like it lived long enough.

Well, it isn’t like he hasn’t earned it at this point… How the fuck are you gonna spend the better part of a decade buying up a shit ton of studios - ostensibly to make you a competitive stable of console moving exclusives - to have almost all of them release what are arguably their worst games time and time again… So to compensate, they shutter studios who’ve just produced games almost universally lauded by critics and crowd alike, and then just say fuck it, we never even believed in exclusives to begin with, yet decided not to take a stand on it until… now for… reasons…? 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Eliminating 9,000 jobs only guarantees they’ll flounder even longer.

Maybe. Microsoft’s biggest revenue stream has historically been government contracts. I don’t see that failing them anytime in the next decade.

But retail consumer spending? That’s something that could seriously take a few hits in the next big downturn. I can see a company putting its finger to the wind and betting a '08 style recession will kill the market for console gaming in another two or three years.

This is the likely scenario. They are predicting an incredibly unpredictable consumer market in the next 4-8 years but a very predictable defense industry market in that time.

Honestly, its probably a good thing they canceled it. They were going to butcher that perfect game.

But also FYI, Perfect Dark is available on Nintendo Switch Online as a Nintendo 64 +17 Mature title, along with Turok and Turok 2

The best way to play it is with mouse & KB using the 1964 emulator GEPD version, imo.

Is it a good port? I really enjoy turok 2 on PS4, would love to play perfect dark on something better than an N64.

Sorry. Im not sure what would make it a good or bad port. Im not familiar with what the differences would be.

It was originally released on N64 and the Switch Online N64 mode seems fine. It feels like the original game.

Yeah, can see that question is vague. Lots of remakes / remasters in recent years, some amazing, and some garbage. Didnt want to invest in this and be pissed off about it.

Watched a few youtube reviews and sounds like something I’d enjoy.

You should play the Project64 GEPD project.

A customised emulator setup specifically to run Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark in 60fps, widescreen support, keyboard and mouse controls, support for HD texture packs.

        https://github.com/graslu/1964GEPD/releases/tag/latest

IMHO it’s the definitive way to experience these games on modern hardware. I’ve tried running both on my steam deck and the controls just don’t translate well to a comfortable experience so prefer this.

I’m sorry but perfect dark will always just be “that game that got made cause Rare couldn’t make a sequel to goldeneye” it was a good game but didn’t age super well and the character and world just seems a bit cheese for 2025

I completely disagree. Perfect Dark holds up extremely well. I still play it occasionally. Of course the framerate is atrocious at times.

Well, you’re certainly entitled to your (wrong) opinion!

Lol it’s not for everyone, especially if you started out with goldeneye. A lot of people I play with don’t have the same appreciation for it, and that’s okay.

And yeah, it’s so cheesy, it makes people spontaneously develop lactose intolerance.

But much like the movie Evolution, I don’t love it because it’s groundbreaking and iconic to its genre. It’s fun for me.

You bring up i played goldeneye first and that’s true, it’s why I wanted a sequel. It’s also why I will always pick Wcw vs Nwo : revenge, over wwf no mercy, it has a better nostalgia factor for me
