Summary
The Taliban have banned windows in homes that allow views of areas where Afghan women might be seen, citing concerns over “obscene acts.”
This new decree mandates blocking or obstructing such windows in existing and new buildings, continuing the group’s systemic repression of women since regaining control of Afghanistan in August 2021.
The Taliban’s policies have included bans on women’s education, public appearances, and voices.
Critics, including the U.N., warn these actions dangerously erode human rights, while activists call out global inaction over the ongoing oppression.
The Talibans are soo gay they don’t even want to know about the existence of women.
They’re called the Taliban, not the Taliallow
Fuck it, have the upvote
It would be much easier if they blindfolded men.
To stop women from being able to see out. Isolation is torture. One less escape route.
This shit is terrifying.
Jesus fucking Christ. I hadn’t considered that.
The treatment of women in these Islamofascist dictatorships is our version of the holocaust and we’re all just sitting by and watching.
I don’t know what we could even do, but I’m always filled with so much sadness thinking about the women and girls in those countries.
Fuck religion and every preacher scheister spreading that shit.
“My invisible friend in the sky is better than yours !!!”
Christo-faschists in the US are gonna control every part of our goverment and they want women losing the rights to have a period without government intervention.
Seriously, what is the point of trying to control women this way? Or really in any matter? I’ve never understood it. Are people really that scared and threatened by women? What is the end game for people who do things like this?
Individually, they’re probably racing for social status by demonstrating more extreme versions of the existing set of rules.
It’s a common thing in human cultures to gain social status by exemplifying a more extreme version of whatever the social norm is.
In this case, the norm got established as “special niche for women” and now it’s a runaway process of status-seeking.
Kinda like peacocks and their feathers. Instead of sexual selection in the case of peacocks, this is social selection as men compete for higher and higher status by having more and more ridiculous displays of “look how well I embody this control women rule”.
So it’s not like they’re trying to engineer some specific social benefit. That is, ostensibly, the reasoning. But in actuality, each man who proposes or backs and further encroachment on the women is doing so for his own selfish gain: in the form of social status.
Kinda like there’s no utilitarian value to having ridiculously huge hats, but a person in a culture where big hats signal status can gain prestige by putting on a bigger hat.
This is social status seeking, in the form of purity demonstration.
Thanks, that helps me understand it better. In my head I was comparing it to systems like apartheid. Which with apartheid there are clear economic benefits for the oppressors. Like cheap/slave labor and by having more opportunities than others. I’m not saying I agree with any of that, but I see why people would do it. But with the Taliban being such a part a patriarchal society to begin with, you would think at some point the oppression would have negative impacts on the oppressors. Of course, there I go trying to apply logic and reasoning for hatred and oppression.
I think the peacock comparison you made is perfect. I still can’t comprehend how anyone could belittle another person to make themselves feel better, but it tracks. Thanks for the great response.
Yup. In any group you’ll always have those who seek status by being more extreme than the rest. Others in the group feed this by giving them their applause and attention. You see this in even something as trivial as a shared interest groups like hiking or biking. Here the Taliban making this decision (and not all of them want this) are showing they are “more devout and better Muslims than the rest” and also trying to justify their positions.
It is also a good way to deflect attention from the fact that the economy is shit and the Taliban have been lousy rulers.
One way to win support is to pit one group against another. It makes them (the ones on top) feel good and deflects attention from those in charge. Here the woman are used to being treated poorly and many of them even aid in their own oppression. “This is the way it has always been.”
Really glad that they solved so many problems that peeping toms are now the biggest problem in the country. That’s what’s happening here, right?
Yeah they already took care of women in policing and girls in school.
How backwards and idiotic a religion can become.
I wonder how much more they can isolate woman. Next up, woman must be sealed in jars.
So basically you can’t have windows in any building in an urban area because you can draw a line of sight to some place where woman are.
Fry them all.
Oh don’t worry that’s just the multipolar world kicking in
Linux users in Afghanistan:
I always think about how they think this will work in the longterm. If you completely ban woman from all places and want to cover their existence you will create an environment where you simply kill your country by lowering the birthrates. When there are no places to date this will affect the birthrates in a way that, in the longterm, you will not be able to support your country because there aren’t enough people to support everything.
They forcefully marry the daughters and they get raped when that marriage happens. So Idk if birth rates will go down
Hate to say it, but that devinetively seems like an option.
It’s not an option, it’s the norm in many of these countries. Arrainged marriage, social pressure, and rape.
They should probably just ban women outright until they learn how to live beside women responsibly
I REALLY want to find an arab woman who’s lived under taliban rule, but also speaks english. I really want to ask her a hypothetical question.
I live in America. I see naked women quite frequently. I live in a society where I’ve literally gone in public, and seen women wearing a thong bikini, basically made of dental floss, and no top.
The logic of the taliban is that women cannot reveal their bodies to men, or it will FORCE the men to abuse and rape the women. I have frequently been in the presense of naked and near naked women. I am a man. I have never beat or raped a woman.
So I want to ask a woman who’s had experience first hand living with the taliban.
Would you feel safer living naked with me everyday? Or fully clothed everyday with the taliban?
People in Afghanistan aren’t Arabs; they’re Afghans. They notably don’t speak Arabic.
:O
My mistake. I legit thought they did.
Soooooooo, what do they speak?
from a quick glance at Wikipedia, the official languages are Dari and Pashto, spoken by 75% and 48% of the population respectively, but many other languages are also spoken
Arabic is only spoken by 1% of the Afghani population, which is less than English (6%)
To be clear, Dari and Pashto are considerably less prevalent than Arabic’s global native speaker estimate you listed. Per Wikipedia, even:
Dari: ~31 million speakers worldwide (~0.38%), and the native tongue for ~50% of Afghanistan
Pashto: ~40 million speakers worldwide (~0.24%), and the native tongue for ~48% of Afghanistan
And, technically, the native speaker stat on a global scale for Arabic is closer to 3% (~310 million = ~4.61%), with English is nearer 4.61% (373 million). Technically. 🤓
Pretty sure they’re talking about the Afghani population here
I included those stats as well. 🙇🏽♂️
The 1% Arabic and 6% English weren’t global speakers but Afghani speakers.
They speak 7 different languages since they are separate groups and the country was drawn by foreign superpowers at the time. So not shaped by a common ethnicity or shared idea like other countries.
That is a creepy-ass thing to ask any woman. WTF dude? They’re probably safer with the Taliban.
No need to burst into outrage over details while burring the lede. Why is this so common around here? Yes, the question can be phrased more sensibly but that’s not important and it’s largely inconsequential to their point. Jfc. lol
What do you mean burying the lede?? His entire creepy post was about asking Afghani women if they would rather live under the taliban or naked in his house.
What kind of a sicko wants to ask that?
I believe the intent was, “Don’t you find it odd that I’ve never beaten or raped a woman, if it is ostensibly inevitable?” Or “How do you explain that I’ve never…”
But it’d make more sense to ask a misogynistic Afghani man. E.g. “Wouldn’t you rather your wife live naked in my home?”
If your goal is to appear less misogynistic - maybe don’t concentrate so much on naked women living in your house?
Goddamn.
NGL, you read like you’re doom-gripping your shaft while you type.
eg. “If your goOooOoal is to appearrr less misAHgynistic-c-c — maybe ^ohygod DON’T concentrate unh. yeah so much on naked WIM’n living in your house?!”
^Goddamn.
No they are not. What do you think happens behind closed doors/windows?
With a sicko who wants you to live naked in his house? Nothing good.
Great idea … just get them to export all the women, then when they want children, ship their semen over, artificially inseminate the women, keep female children, send male children after a few years old to live in Afghanistan with their all male family. Just ban women completely from the country.
There’s an Anime that did gender segregation in a similar way (and for similarly chauvinistic reasons), but on a planetary scale - Vandread.
Until? That’s criminally generous.
