CW: comparisons to child abuse/DV

spoiler

Kind of sad because the way a lot of libs talk about not causing a fuss reminds me of a beaten child. Like they know they’re being abused, but they also know that if they step out of line they will be punished far worse. “Don’t give them a reason to hit us harder.” I mean libs often will straight up say that about the police and peaceful protesting “Don’t give them a reason to hate us.” Except they will always find a reason, unless you let them walk all over you for your entire life.

Yes, the story of Revachol is basically “what if D Day would have been against the Paris Commune instead of nazi occupied France and then was followed by the Vietnam war, but with the US as the winner, and then they go full Jakarta Method on all the remaining communards, and then the whole place gets post-USSR shock therapy and after that they also get turned into a debt colony like Greece after the Euro crisis” and Martinaise is the part of the city that got hit the hardest by all of that.

I’m reading it not as “Martinaise was destroyed by looters” but rather “If the looters don’t step down everything’ll look like Martinaise for that reason instead of getting bombed to shit”. Which is marginally better because it’s not entirely wrong, still wild ass take to come away from Disco Elysium with to the point I don’t even understand what the preferred solution is. Just get your shit wrecked anyways just with no fight?

“When the looting starts, the shooting starts” is a phrase originally used by Walter E. Headley, the police chief of Miami, Florida, in response to an outbreak of violent crime during the 1967 Christmas holiday season. He accused “young hoodlums, from 15 to 21”, of taking “advantage of the civil rights campaign” that was then sweeping the United States. Having ordered his officers to combat the violence with shotguns, he told the press that “we don’t mind being accused of police brutality”. The quote may have been borrowed from a 1963 comment from Birmingham, Alabama police chief Bull Connor. It was featured in Headley’s 1968 obituary published by the Miami Herald.

Gives speech about gleefully shooting black kids. Dies. lmao.

unless you let them walk all over you for your entire life.

I’d say even if you let them walk all over you. Dominant classes will always collectively demand more and more worship and self-deprecation from the lower class, and the more they comply the more they ask from them.

Slightly off topic here, but I just got notified that I’m being laid off from my academic job. In a nutshell, my responsibility was to do research to help guide a private philanthropic organization’s decisions on where to allocate funding for projects. When I joined, the decisions seemed well-intentioned if not necessarily fully guided by research into what was happening on the ground, but the organization has gotten increasingly untethered from reality, and the research we do has become less oriented around finding the answer and more about searching for confirmatory evidence for the funding org’s model. When I pointed these issues out to The Boss, I got lectures about how everyone is “answering up” and we have to support leadership’s decisionmaking. Anywho, as my intro implies, all the “answering up” in the world has resulted in the termination of our funding.

The whole situation seems like an expression of the same principles - all we have to do is defer to authority and give them the answers that they want and everything will be fine! The hierarchy will protect those who protect the hierarchy. Except it doesn’t, leadership doesn’t feel the same sense of loyalty that they demand from their followers and all you’ve done is sold your integrity and intellectual independence for nothing.
