I’m currently between sets of my morning work out, and the thing getting me through is that I’ve got nothing going on today.

He’s even gaming, which I wouldn’t define as doing nothing.

To me, an example of doing nothing would be watching a movie. Or… Just scrolling through the list of movies and never actually watching one.

If I have enough motivation to play games, it’s a productive day. Sometimes, like you said, even a movie is too much.

I’m not a serious gamer and even I think video games are doing something. Because I don’t play a lot, when I do, I consider that productive time. Every game I finish is an accomplishment for me. Same with books.

I used to get up at 6 AM when I had a job. When I retired, I turned off my alarm for good. Then I started waking up naturally at 8 AM.

Sleeping in caused me to be awake later into the day, so I started going to bed around 2 AM. Which led to me sleeping in until 10 AM. Which meant I was awake until 4 AM. So I started getting up at noon. Which means I’m wide awake until 6 AM. So now I’m waking up around 2 PM…

I hate to admit it, but I think I need my alarm back. My wake/sleep habits get messed up because my body seems to naturally operate on a 26 hour day cycle.

This is a real medical condition. Some people just have non-24hour circadian rhythms.

Mine is like this and it really confused me for a long time. It’s pretty crippling. I used to take melatonin for it, but now I’m retired and just go to sleep whenever I’m tired. Went to bed at 1pm yesterday and woke up at 9pm.

It’s incredibly crippling in modern society that demands you conform to it in order to survive. I’ve tried so much but nothing helps. My body sleeps when it sleeps and if I do it then well it just sucks to suck. Maintaining a job is so fucking difficult.

I still do volunteer stuff when I have energy. No commitments, no responsibility, just help when you can.

But yeah the #1 hidden requirement of any job is reliability. If you get injured, sick, or for any reason cannot consistently do an 8 hour shift exactly when you’re told to; you’re basically just excluded from modern society and employment.

I tried really really hard to find any job that would take me, for a whole year. I gave up eventually. Freelance programming came close but they pay peanuts nowadays since you’re competing with someone in India where each USP (United States Peanut) goes much further and they can take the $200 for 2 months labour job.

I have an alarm set on the weekends though it is an hour or so later than my regular weekday alarm. If I really need it I’ll snooze through but most of the time I need the push to get out of bed and not just rot until noon

If I disable the alarm on my phone, it turns off the automatic do not disturb that lets me sleep without being woken by some asshole calling or messaging me. So I always leave an alarm set, though I might move it later.

I love how watching TV is consistently labeled as “doing nothing”, because that’s really just what it is. I like to call it a pseudoactivity. The brain is indeed intensely busy, but then again in such a passive way, it’s a mind-boggling paradox.

Yes but these days are practice for when I actually have shit to do. So it’s part of the bigger plan. So it’s okay.
