  • Oh snap! Didn’t know this existed. Definitely want to try this out when I get back to my PC

  • Thought someone actually said something to him, but no it’s just an article about people’s reactions online, and on a shit website at that.

  • IIRC there’s some cheaper ones out there around $5, but it’s been a long time since I’ve shopped for a Usenet service. The way I look at it is I’m not having to pay for Netflix, Prime, Peacock, Disney +, HBO, HiDive, etc. just to watch the shows and movies I want. I do pay for Crunchyroll, but that’s mostly because I don’t want to pull and store long shows like One Piece, but that might change with their recent price increase.

  • Wow, I’ve never seen this before. Thanks for sharing!

  • Things you need:

A Usenet provider such as EasyNews or Astraweb. Usenet services host the content. Be aware that some services like GigaNews just rehost from the same pool of servers as a lot of others, also can be a tad scummy. There’s a lot to look into here for features like connection limits, retention, and download speed. You can also purchase “block accounts” which let you buy blocks of data to use on demand with no expiration. Astraweb is great for this as a secondary source since they have their own servers and can host different content than other hosts. Look for promo codes online when signing up for one as you can usually get solid rates via referrals for like $7-$15 a month. Block accounts can run like $25 for 100GB of download. You can see which servers overlap here at this link courtesy of @Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca

A Usenet downloading client like SabNZBD for downloading NZB files (pronounced: newzbins)

An Indexer, such as Drunken Slug, NZBGeek, NZB Finder, or OMGWTFNZBs. Indexers help you find the content you’re looking for in the giant pool of hosted content on Usenet services. Usually good to have more than 1 indexer, even if using a free account on another. Usually run about $15 a year.

Usenet can be tied into Arrs programs like Sonarr and Radarr for automated downloading which makes things a lot easier especially when you set up your library correctly. See Trash Guides for help with this.

Personally I recommend running this all through Docker, but it’s not necessary.

Also even with Usenet, I’d still recommend a VPN. Can never be too safe.

Edit: added link from @Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca’s comment below

  • Wild.

Side note that this made me think of, but one of my favorite, uhh viruses?, from the Netscape internet era was cupholder.exe, which when ran popped out your CD drive.

Crazy to think about how people used to just download sketchy .exe files like that or LiNkIng-PaRk-nUmB.exe or similar on Limewire.

  • Should probably change it to “How did computer viruses spread before the internet”

But I don’t know if they actually would have been a thing outside of government type shit.

Would have had to be through direct injection requiring physical access to the machine using methods like breaking and entering, tailgating, insider access, or via social engineering using “dropped” media containing the virus.

This is speculation tho. I’m sure there’s articles on it somewhere.

  • Every time I get a share link I’m always pasting it and deleting everything after the /? Like if there’s an extension to auto strip that shit out, I’d be happier

  • I can only watch it in small doses

  • Linux is very secure, or can be, but that depends on your threat model and how much you’re willing to do or put up with.

The great thing about Linux is there tends to be a lot of solid documentation that explains what features are for and how to implement them. Links above are mostly to the Arch Wiki. Whatever distro you use, you’d want to start at their wiki. I’m currently using CachyOS, and I’ve found their wiki to be very helpful.

Some other helpful features to look into are

    • btrfs snapshot support with GRUB or Limine bootloaders: easy snapshot rollback in case of a bad update
    • atomic distros like Bazzite: updates happen on a separate subvolume and don’t apply on reboot if they aren’t 100% successful
    • immutable distros like NixOS: core directories like /usr, /bin, /sbin, /lib, /lib64, /etc, /boot, /opt are read-only for higher security against malicious software
  • Soy sauce????

  • What the hell is that thing anyway

  • Had to replace the microwave recently after the last one crapped out. This new one also has a jingle. Why does every machine need a jingle now? The dryer has a jingle. It’s not even that fancy.

  • I have that same rice cooker. Zojirushi. It’s pretty solid, so I’d bet whatever fancy crap it uses to tell if it’s properly cooked probably helped the way his stuff turned out

  • What’s silly too is the same people will do things like “chickenpox parties” and don’t see the irony of it.
