If you want even lower prices at Walmart you can literally just buy things in the discount aisle until you get something that comes up as “Store Merch” or anything that comes up as indecipherable shorthand; then you can print off as many of those barcodes as you want on yellow paper and just glue them over the barcodes on the item so that at least a few of the original bars are obscured from end to end (the people whose job it is to mark down items can’t even do this right).

The cashiers in the self-checkout are stretched, and they are trained to look for people not scanning items. The door hosts don’t have enough time to re-scan each barcode, let alone the abbreviations on the receipts. They mostly just check to see if the number of items in your cart is the same as the number of lines on the receipt.

To catch someone spoofing barcodes, they would need to increase their labor hours by 20% and have higher standards to train their employees to. This cost-benefit analysis means that losses from theft would need to be over 8% before they did anything about it.
