Certain types of flowering bamboo are unusual in that the plants only flower at intervals of several years, and after flowering, the plant dies. Typically, all specimens of a species flower and then die the same year, then new plants grow from their seeds.
How about a GMO Bamboo with a short life span. It lives just long enough to bust thorough data/ power cables and water lines.

I don’t think I we understand the triggers but that would be the key to the short life span.
