Never liked the thing, it pretty much just sits in my drawer. Why only one joystick? It feels wrong
I love the hell out of it, best controller I’ve ever used, but the right stick -> trackpad transition does take some getting used to. For shooters though the precision is almost mouse-like.
I would say it’s like learning to play fighting games on a hitbox. There’s a learning curve but it’s undeniably better once you get over it. Although the real problem with the SC is that all of its advantages are still not as good as KB+M, so unless you have a specific desire to play PC games on a couch (which, you may remember, was what Valve was trying to get people to do with the original Steam Machine) there’s no reason to use it.
For shooters though the precision is almost mouse-like.
Bullshit. The precision is at best a laptop trackpad.
Having tried to game with laptop mousepads before, no it’s not.
Are you using gyro to aim or do you actually have your thumb on the trackpad here? Because I have had one for almost a decade now and i prefer it for everything but fps.
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
This is using the gyro to aim which sounds cool. Using the steam controller trackpad is garbage.
Joystick + gyro is actually good
We used to do bad controller nights on Destiny 2 Raids. You had to use the shittiest controller you could dig up. I had some piece of shit that had like half a keyboard and a joystick, one of my friends got a DS to send the PC inputs, and my brother just used this.
It’s very polarizing. Ymmv on the trackpad. It is very customizable (regarding mapping, sens, etc), but even with customization the trackpad doesn’t always work well depending on the game. The trackpad is genuinely nice to move a mouse pointer around, but may be kinda weird when controlling a camera. The shape is really nice and ergonomic for some people, less so for others.
I think if it works well for an individual with the specific games they play, then they love it.
I think it comes from controller grip habits. If you grip it like a regular controller, it sucks to use and isnt ergonomic. If you let it sit in your fingers so your palms don’t touch it, letting your thumbs sit high above, it’s wonderful.
I loved mine. It was way ahead of its time. Once you get used to the slightly different scheme it worked super well. It just took some adjustment
Any recommended games that showcase it particularly well?
I liked how it worked in crusader kings 3
Anything that wasn’t great with a controller, honestly. Things that required light mouse use or were easier with a mouse. That was the real strength. It wasn’t as good as a mouse at all but it was WAY better than a joystick at being a mouse. It was good enough for “I could never play this game on the couch before but now I can”
The new one with two joysticks seems perfectly viable. The old one is great for wizards that want to ponder their settings and do very nice things with it
It’s actually workable for games that were made for mouse controls and still ok for games designed for gamepads.
It’s a pretty good idea, but it kinda lacked some refinement. Should have had two joysticks, I couldn’t get the hang of the touch pads, and the click of them felt awful. Plus the triggers would have benefitted from being linear. Could have added some weight too imo.
How does it work, the circles are track pads or something?
Yep
Trackpads with haptic feedback, big difference
It’s a very niche device. For those people it’s great. That niche is incredibly rabid and vocal.
I’m not even a fan of the new controller, the OG one sucks butts.
I always wanted one as a kid, wanted to see what I could’ve done with it. Now used ones are hard to find and expensive, might as well just buy the new one.
I couldnt get into it either. I much prefer the steamdeck/steam controller 2 layout
I like mine but never got into it and haven’t used it much. I think part of the problem is games were never made for it in mind, and you could set up things to work well but it required a lot of fucking around to start with. The thing I would always adjust is the radius on the right pad so you could leave your thumb there to constantly turn like a maxed out joystick. That setting was either too small or non-existent in the default settings so I’d have to configure it for every game I used it on
