T-minus 3 years until my smart fridge requires a penis inspection to open it.

T-minus 5 years until my smart fridge requires verification gambling on top of the penis inspection to open it. North Korea hacked all the food (bugs) inside so there’s no point in opening it but I have to because the only job left is fridge gambling.

Gottheimer started a congressional investigation of a local high school after there was a student walkout against the genocide in Gaza. The man is a fucking demon. That’s “Lower Taxes, Jersey Values” for you.

not to be confused with jared moskowitz, who is demonic in almost identical ways. i think he’s a sponsor on one of the corpo sponsored anti-privacy bills. i say this because i totally confuse where gottheimer and moskowitz are based out of sometimes.

I’m really worried about the dangerous precedent this sets. I imagine this will eventually lead to mandatory ID checks across devices.

In the Linux space, developers have already started implementing or considered implementing age verification in systemd, polkit/accountsservice, xdg desktop portal, flatpak, archinstall, etc. Mostly started by one enthusiastic guy. Midnight BSD already implemented age attestation. Most Linux and BSD distros originate within the US. Most upstream distros are caving into implementing/supporting this feature, and it’s mostly obscure, downstream distros that have mentioned either they will fight against it or they are unsure. Linux for new users is going to be really difficult if they want to avoid this surveillance tech, and I’m concerned that users who try source build systems like Gentoo or Guix to patch and remove age verification will be unable to do so after it becomes unsustainable. Even if one is able to remove the features, how long until the device is blocked from the internet if it doesn’t verify its age/ID, and people can’t access their bank accounts, pay their utility bills, pay their taxes, etc.?

I also worry that this could lead to ID checks mandated in brick and mortar stores and all public places. How long until this tech is used to track, arrest, and brutalize people who have any left wing thought or criticize the government? Will this tech be used to collect financial information of revolutionaries and sanction them from being able to buy groceries and other basic necessities? This tech is already being planned for assisting ICE and targeting trans people.

I know I am spiraling into doomerism and probably getting ahead of myself. I should probably step away from the lathe, but I feel this is really serious and I hope communist and leftist organizations start taking this seriously.

Maybe we need to start hosting a Linux/BSD/Hurd build system built for secure communications for ML revolutionaries in the deep web and share torrents. The only way I see to fight back against this is to not comply and collectively organize computer scientists to build an underground operating system. Maybe start using decentralized encrypted networks via bluetooth/long-range Wi-Fi (HaLow).

    Also...

I assume it will probably be ignored as it isn’t really logistically/computationally possible, but it’s going to be interesting how the law reacts when it comes to kubernetes clusters, embedded devices, ramdisk installs, etc.

This is not good. “Verify” implies they’re doing some checking like tying an ID to you.

It would be one thing to require all OS manufacturers to implement a method for parents to input an age for the user of the computer that cannot be changed without reinstalling the OS. That would be fine. But this is tying the identity of adults to their machines and creating a mechanism for websites to query it which will 100% be used so the NSA knows what you’re doing even over a VPN.

Didn’t take that long after the US started declining and China surpassing it for the US to slap on more “authoritarianism” than any communist state has ever had in this area. China requires ID checks for gaming to keep kids within established limits but they don’t require your OS to keep tabs on your exact identity and report to their central intelligence agency and you can freely browse around and do whatever including paying for western VPNs to circumvent their firewall.

Guess this is how they make Linux illegal too. I’m sure Valve and IBM will come up with a compliant model of Linux but anything else will probably be locked out via secureboot and TPM in newer computer builds to comply with this law.

I assure you the west will clamp down on VPNs and unlike China it won’t be just a show thing where they make it technically difficult but not impossible. They’ll use allow-listing and/or they’ll use their full financial and sanctions might to crush these VPN companies or block any traffic to them from within the US. There won’t be any way around it. Tor is slow and completely compromised by zionist intelligence who together with 14 eyes run most of the infrastructure.

well it sure is a nation of losers who can’t even get a webpage up in 2 days. Anyway I’m sure whenever it is public information, you’ll really be able to tell it was written by someone who has used their understanding of what “an operating system” is to construct law which is both comprehensible and enforceable.

I should probably care about this, but it’s hard to be that worried when a bypass will inevitably be created the day this gets added to Windows or whatever else.

I would make an argument that the government requiring this constitutes violations of the 4th amendment. There is no legitimate Constitutional reason for the government to have biometrics on all owners of any OS. Those who sacrifice liberty in the name of security deserve neither.

I imagine this is the angle that groups like ACLU will pursue. At least if it stretches into strong identification. Seems like a direct analog to the already-established precedent regarding “stop and identify” statutes.

Though, MFW I’m in a “construct a legal system based on vibes and class warfare” competition and my opponent is the US
