Tati Bruening performing as Contact Sports, Roseland Theater.

I think this one’s the best of the concert photography I had done recently. The smoke machine made for a bit of a challenge to shoot through, and this shot certainly isn’t good enough for my portfolio, but it’s good enough I could put it out here.

Thanks for seeing my work!

I wonder if people came up to Seurat and tried out correcting him on the green on the lakeshore maybe needing to be a tad more vibrant, or it would have been better if he got the lady in the foreground with the huge bum a little more centered on the canvas.

I imagine if they did, he would have been well within his rights to whack them with his palette.

Amazing shot, it honestly looks like a religious painting. The fog lends etheriality like a pre dawn mist. Her devoted focus and general posture over the white clothed table is deeply reminiscent to me of the consecration of eucharist. And all this is made the better by it being a woman performing at a nightclub, a firm contrast to the catholic mass that it resembles.

Theatrical haze is just a fine mist of glycerol - sugar alcohol (not to be confused with alcohol alcohol - it’s non-intoxicating) and is a commonly used in food and cosmetics. You can eat it, drink it and inhale it with no side effects.

I think you’re being a bit self-critical. A little cropping makes it feel more balanced

It does have a Renaissance quality to it.

I don’t know, I wouldn’t want to lose the light falling on the right of the white cloth. I think a square crop is the way to go for this one. (Yes it’s not perfectly square, I’m on my phone, best I can do at the mo. 😆)

Dude, your shadows and the lines of white look like they were drawn on. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.

Edit: Also, I’ll try and add others if I can. I’m not familiar with your account.

Edit 2: Which one are you most proud of?

Whereas that one feels technically impressive, this one I love. Different tastes I suppose.

Here is my opinion, and my opinion only. I like the concert pic even better and here is why. Note: I do see why you like the other one better because of your goals, but I feel that the concert pic is more artistic and quite beautiful. Not many pics make me go whoa when I first see it.

            • It looks like an accidental renaissance painting.
            • the focused light in the foreground and the misty background
            • the white lines give a hint of other things back there and as I said, look like they’re drawn on.
            • the composition is elegant and follows the artist’s golden rule
            • it’s an action shot that looks almost posed, but not quite.
            • the colors (although, I know how hard it is for your fav pic to keep those night time colors)

Again, I’m telling the truth that I love this pic more than the first 20 on your profile and the one you chose as your fav. My guess is that you’re not a fan of master’s style works.

Alright, that’s fair. I really should try to silence the critic inside of me, she keeps art from getting out.

I’ll add something else, to me it’s about the subject itself.

Obviously she’s gorgeous, but the way she looks absolutely captured in that creative focus, consumed by her passion for what’ she’s crafting, oblivious to even the existence of a world around her, its so hauntingly beautiful… Like something private that I shouldn’t be seeing, or that is so rare that I’m blessed to see it.

The shadows, the smoke, the contour - all of it play into this mysterious, even slightly mistique experience in a place one wouldn’t expect it.

You were there, and certainly it was loud and dynamic and you were in a different state of mind.

For us, we’re just seeing this fixed image, and the lack of context let’s the mind fill in these details and make it more than what, to your eyes, it is.

At least that my take on it. Beautiful photo.

Very true, a good picture of someone fully in the process of crafting something has a particular beauty to it even when one isn’t attracted to the subject.

I’ve long felt there’s something holy in nightlife, and this picture kinda draws out that feeling. The smoke reminiscent of early morning fog borrows its etheriality. And her look of devoted focus almost brings to mind hagiographic portraiture where the subject is entirely focused away from the viewer. She also just kinda looks like a priest in the process of blessing eucharist.

I am just an amateur on my phone, but after seeing the edits I thought I also give it a try. I think making shadows a bit darker and getting rid of the greyness helps the atmosphere a lot.

I’ve looked at the comments where people are cropping and adjusting this to “fix” it and I think it’s better as the original, by far. The way the fog washes it out is a feature, not a bug. The cropping with the focus in the dead centre works - moving the figure to the right third might be a more traditional thing to do but this is good the way it is. The cropping also allows the red patch in the top-right, and the contrasting blue in the bottom-left to be part of the story. It’s good the way it is.

Yikes the edits in the thread aren’t doing it any favours… But the last one was going the right direction indeed, the fog isn’t a bad thing but it just lifted all the shadows so much that you lose some of the atmosphere, so just bring your exposure down until she looks how you want and let the shadows drop into darkness with just a bit of detail still coming through. Do NOT also increase contrast a ton like the examples in this thread, keep your ratios similar as they are now just darker. Personally I would also make the shadows a bit cooler in tone.

What you see as my original post was the results of the decisions I made given the space and the lighting to work with. The original raw was much harsher than this.

I hope my choice of edits were alright.

Yeah it looks totally fine for a realistic/natural result, my suggestions definitely go towards stylizing it more but all that is a matter of taste. It’s a nice click in any case!

Haven’t seen that haircut for awhile. Takes me back! Also, gotta love her hair-color with the all-black body suit. Killer look.

So what kind of music was this? (I need to get my Ableton fired back up one of these days)

composition is great but yeah that fog is a killer for the clarity.

I think you could include it in your portfolio though if included as part of an artistic expression of composition.

though, if you’re an already established photographer it’s wise to not include it.

    great pic though!
