Wondering how many us citizens know what moratorium means

We call them bye weeks. Never heard the term in context of football.
Different but related concept! Moratorium weeks are institutional blocks of time (standard in college, depending on the academic schedule/seriousness for highschool) where you’re not allowed to engage with your sport - no coaching, no practice, etc. Generally these are for things like finals/midterms. You see them most commonly talked about in american football because of it’s popularity, but it’s a thing in pretty much any college sport. My institution has extended them to even include the HvZ and League of Legends games.

Anyways: my initial point was that it’s a very commonplace term in the US - so much so that it invites an unflattering conclusion about that user for encountering a primary school term so rarely that they’re lead to think it’s uncommon. You’re right though, I was commenting right after waking up and misunderstood grey_matter’s comment as being a reversal of the idea to reflect on me somehow (yeah, clearly wrong); it was the “sportsball” thing that threw me, I haven’t seen that used unironically since the blood-soaked night when we purged the Big Bang Theory fans.
FWIW, I always tag users with a reminder in my client first before blocking them (if I choose to go that far), and the end of that tag has the URL for whatever it was that caused me to do so. The whole thing doesn’t show, but the fact someone’s got a tag at all can allow me to see it by editing it again if I need to.
Yeah ordinarily I just tag people if I want to ignore them - the only users I have outright blocked are reddit repost bots and, apparently, them. Probably just an accident, idk.

As a socialist I think it is a bad idea to use “advanced” words. Do we only want intellectuals, academics etc? Or should we appeal to the masses?

I think a lot about a woman I used to know who adamantly refused to look up words she didn’t know. If she couldn’t figure it out from context, that’s just what it was.
She had some weird beliefs. Also the worst DND player I’ve ever had, I think.
One thing I found out recently is that the reading standards for American schools almost explicitly discourage that. They literally teach kids to guess what the word means based on context, or just skip over that word and move on.
