the KIDS act may or may not pass the US senate, the EU is planning a social media ban, chat control might pass, etc… what exactly do i have to do to prep for all this?
You can’t.
Not in the way you are probably thinking.
If you were, for example, an American born on us soil, you would have a birth certificate, social security number, many published records of your participation in school and community activities. If you’re old enough to drink alcohol, you most certainly have a government id and if you drove a car earlier than that you already had a government id. If you vote then you and your address are in the voter rolls.
That stuff’s not going away and the argument used by the nra to force batf to keep paper files instead of allowing them to digitize everything has been eroded away to uselessness.
You gotta recognize that you exist and everyone knows it.
Rather than any of the advice itt suggesting you switch to Linux, learn complex self hosting, etc: just recognize that the phone, accounts and computer you have now is main. If you want an alt:
Buy an iPhone or pixel outright and unlocked. No at the moment you don’t have any other options, sucks to suck. If someone says this is wrong information I recommend you don’t listen to them. If you bought a pixel it’s time to install graphene. Do your research and make sure you understand. If you bought an iPhone it’s time to harden it. Make sure your iCloud account is not tied to an identifying email and that you enable adp.
Buy a separate computer: it doesn’t need to be powerful. You’d be amazed what win 10 iot ltsc 21h2, sequoia or just Debian can do on decade old hardware. Make sure not to accept any invitations to tie your login to an account in the cloud and go from there.
Make some new accounts: start with an email and don’t tie any of your old accounts to it. If a service wants to verify using text, just use some text receiving service to bypass it.
If you’re worried that your alt and main will become associated because they’re coming from the same place, use a vpn on both. I like mullvad but there are others.
Contact your representatives and do your best not to let that happen. :)
Supporting organisations and political parties that fight these proposals also helps.
Half the time our representatives want to kill us.
Half want to kill us and the other half don’t care if we die.
I2P
I2P!
I2PPPPPPPPP!!!
We can build another internet here, if we want to.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I2P
Imagine p2p torrents, but crazy encrypted, and you build an internet out of that. That’s basically I2P.
Everyone is a dns/routing server for everyone else, and no one actually knows whose traffic is going where.
If you stay inside of I2P, its basically impossible to be de anonymized, unlike with TOR, where a government LE or Intel agency can just operate nodes and de anonymize people.
I read through the wiki. How do I actually use it?
I won’t lie, setting it up and configuring it and actually using it is basically confusing as fuck… I’ve been doing this kind of shit for decades, and this is fucking complicated to me.
So… yeah. If more people could use this, maybe we could actually get something approximating a user friendly set up/usage guide or setup script type thing.
I think MentalOutlaw has a video or two explaining it, but… those would be several years old by now, may be out of date.
This might help.
Written in … Java!
Whyyyyyyyyyyyy!
Jokes aside; very cool.
There’s a version written in C++: https://github.com/PurpleI2P/i2pd
Also a rather new rust implementation https://github.com/eepnet/emissary
Shit I didn’t even know that existed, thanks!
Using I2Pd very sucessfully on my node. Can recommend!
Because its old. (And arguably battle tested).
Y’know what? I’ve been waiting to try it, but I shall wait no more. Thanks for the little push <3
Happy to be an annoying yet hopefully ultimately positive influence, lol.
Is it okay if I DM you any questions that come up while I explore this magical new world called I2P?
Hah uh yeah, sure!
Though, As I’ve said elsewhere… in terms of actual implementation of this, I’m really a novice at best, maybe up to ‘intermediate’ at a few things.
From the rest of this thread, it seems kyliann0087 is more well versed in this, has their own bit of an ongoing service set up in i2p land…
I am happy to try to help, but you might ask them what you’ve just asked of me, I suspect if they agreed, they’d be more useful than I would be.
I’m uh… more of an I2P fanboy/evangelist, lol.
EDIT
ok here are some of the resources i mentioned earlier/elswhere in the thread, but was too lazy to link earlier:
Mental Outlaw:
Intro to I2P (5 yo youtube video)
Make Linux Ungovernable with I2P (much more recent youtube video)
How I run Darknets From My Home Internet (5 yo odysee video, because some of this content/info is apparently too spicy for YouTube)
An ‘Awesome-I2P’ list, basically a curated list of many different I2P projects/software:
Ooooooo I know what I’m doing after a heady nap! Thank you!
Lol no problem! I’m a fangirl/evangelist for Linux, and I’m only intermediate at it.
Thanks for the resouces; I love awesome-* lists! Also the videos look rather interesting (I see that Linux-Libre penguin…)
I’ll get started today, methinks. It’s my day off :3
I think MO sells his own merch shirts, with linux inspired/related designs.
Like the penguin with showering equipment… that he almost certainly designed to be worn to conventions, with linux people, to politely remind them to bathe, lol.
Oh no, the showeting penguin is official. He’s the mascot for Linux-Libre, a fork which cleans up the kernel by removing non-free, proprietary blobs.
This is great for now but still uses the same hardware and infrastructure as the “regular” internet and is therefore susceptible to government control. Granted, they’d have to cut way deeper than just age verification laws.
If you stay inside of I2P, its basically impossible to be de anonymized
Unless there is another zero day, like in 2014.
https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2014/07/29/i2p-patched-against-de-anonymizing-0-day-tails-integration-still-to-follow/Yes! I totally agree. I did do host a public yacy instance over I2P already (search engine)
I have been experimenting with Lemmy and stoat over I2P. I did get them working but it is still a big Hassel. Also for anyone wanting to try hosting stoat. You can’t use i2pd because it doesnt implement full socks which breaks some of the http headers you need with stoat.
If you can actually figure out some more shit there, document it, that would be extremely useful information, imo.
Theoretically, at least a modified version of lemmy should be constructible within I2P land… but trying to make it accessible via clearnet would… almost certainly be basically not worth it, and arguably defeat the entire point?
It is possible to use I2P as effectively an extremely complex VPN sort of thing for clearnet, via outproxies, but you then just have to trust the outproxy, basically.
I would not make it accessible on the clearnet. Kinda defaults the purpose. I rather have things be usable like normal but over I2P.
Agreed, it would make little sense to me also, to try to make an eepsite federated forum messaging protocol… thing … also work in clearnet, just keep them apart.
I’d actually be surprised if there aren’t already eep-chans, 4chan/2chan/whatevers that exist in eepland.
Interesring…
Unless your prep includes “fight against it politically, tooth and nail,” you’re only delaying the inevitable.
There is no such thing as a technological solution to what is fundamentally a political problem. Ultimately, the fascists pushing this shit have to be destroyed or they will destroy us.
Lol no.
The politics can’t control the tech. We just route around their laws. The internet is global and outside their justification
The internet is global and outside their justification
But it isn’t. The internet is a bunch of interconnected computers right, the infrastructure that connects them can very well be victim of political maneuvers. The beginning of the internet as we know it had to do with politics, and it was funded in part through politics. That’s not gonna stop just know that it took off.
And politics can absolutely control the tech, like for the bans on selling GPUs to China.
You need to learn the difference between a workaround and a solution.
Also, don’t try to pretend that a normal person is going to live as an outlaw just so they can avoid enshittification. Most people will comply, and society as a whole – which includes you, even if you don’t comply yourself! – will suffer for it.
The fiber you rely on isn’t global.
Tor is. Layer 1 is irrelevant, unless they cut it.
You don’t have to use big tech chat apps, or social media. Or even any site with “age verification” (real id).
Just stop using it. I have no idea why people think they have to use these things.
That’s a naïve stance. OP is even talking about the process of it worsening. That means, what happens when sites that don’t implement age verification aren’t reachable anymore? Be that because they have simply been outlawed, because VPNs have become unfeasible or even because states will implement a firewall similiar to China? “Just don’t go there bro” doesn’t cut it.
I was born without the internet and I can die without it too. Perhaps using some bank apps I guess. Some things are required. Most are not.
But sure, I would love if people could do something, but we never can.
What device are you using that banking app on? Cause it’s gonna be Apple or Android and none of the de-googled things either. With what account?
Want to apply for a job? When did you do that the last time without it requiring the internet?
Rent a place to live? Better fill out some forms online.
Want to travel internationally? Where are you getting your tickets?
Face it, you might have been born without the internet but it has become an absolutely essential part of a normal, daily life.
If banking is your one issue, back in the day, Kevin Mitnick recommended just buying the cheapest new Chromebook you could find, and using it exclusively for banking. ZERO other uses. Never browse the web with it. Just boot it, do your banking, and shut it off, then leave it secured at home.
Brother, you just communicated to us via Lemmy. Think about what you are saying.
You were born to a world without the internet. It’s easy to get along without something in a world where it doesn’t exist or otherwise isn’t important. Existing without the internet today would be orders of magnitude more difficult.
Not for me, and it’s my experience im talking about here. How can it be “difficult” to not use the internet? That’s a very low bar for difficult isn’t it?
Free yourself from digital “bigtech” dependence which might be affected. Make peace with inconvienience.
Right? Not very concrete though. Anything else?
Anything else?
class war helps.
It’s inevitable that complete dominance is coming. It’s clear. Eventually one will either have to use their bullshit or they won’t be able to exist in “modern” society.
People need to realize the name of the game being played is conquest, it’s not for the good of humanity, it’s for ownership. “We” conquested animals, natives, etc… authentic genuine humans are next. Authentic humanity needs to stop denying that humanity itself, as a whole is part of the game. We aren’t special. Humanity will be conquested and you will either be in or out. And the divide will be like the difference of upperclass Manhattan and skid row. …Or worse… maybe a concentration camp.
And we are still funding that dream today like fools.
I have to agree and i hate it.
Linux and degoogle your phone.
Put tailsOS onto a thumbdrive as a backup encase of VPN blockage.
Is your Lemmy instance in a country likely to use age verification?
Get away from big social media. Read about how the kids in Australia are staying on social media after the ban.
Spooler: draw a mustash on your face with a marker lol
I laughed when I read about someone doing that.
Take it on a spectrum. You can either do nothing and accept it, damage mitigate, reject, reject while accepting the friction it entails, or just completely drop off from many services entirely. I lean toward the latter end of it.
Get familliar with tor hidden social media like pitch and be on nostr and lemmy.
Also get MeshCore
Do we have the new Lara protocol already with voice and all? I forgot about those things, been waiting for that to hop in.
LoRa can do voice with Reticulum, but its better not to do so because of the bandwidth limit
Yes I know, but on the new version it was said to be done better, faster, higher quality and much easier.
Lora has like 12k max bandwidth, much less in real environments. Voice works in asymmetric transmission (like walkie talkies), but it’s not useful in any meaningful way over unlicensed airwaves.
I read somewhere that the new version was supposed to improve that and make it viable for talking. I might be wrong though.
Analog, yes, no problem. We had 915MHz portable phones that worked fine. Digital is another matter altogether, and encrypted is a licensing mess.
There’s always a tradeoff. Shannon’s law cannot be avoided (without new physics). You can have 2 of low power, long range, and high bandwidth, not all 3 at once. Fortunately, the most important information we exchange isnt actually much data.
Use Linux, GrapheneOS, mesh networking, Free and Open Source Software in general.
How is this even gonna affect the Fediverse? Web DRM blocks? Also, as for Linux, what’s stopping systemd’s age field from becoming mandatory, which would affect the bulk of the ecosystem except for alt-init distros? As for BSD, MidnightBSD already shipped an age field.
I’m uncertain about the future of computing. However, I know that the new laws are meant to control people. They can’t control bots, and they can’t control servers, because those machines aren’t owned by individuals, they can’t be identified and linked to individual real people. Therefore the solution to me seems to be posing as an unmanned machine.
Get a tor browser lined up. You likely already have a VPN or won’t get one anytime soon, but tor is free. Three letter agencies have bought poisoned nodes but probably not enough of them, so this will give you a temp way around surveillance and VPN bans. Might be better if you set your entry nodes outside of 14 eyes countries.
Download TAILs. That has everything you need
Tor Browser.
