So, this is the place where I'm going to be generally hanging out and trolling around, while my Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Blacksky accounts are going to be primarily art posting accounts, and I also have a Nooki account.

I'm also going to start to be active more on here than on lemmy.org, so I'm making this my primary Lemmy account now.

I'll link the other socials I'm varying levels of active on below, plus my lemmy.org account which I'm demoting to my secondary account if that instance is going to be more unstable from now on.

  • How 'bout 0? It shouldn't exist in the first place.

  • Not to mention permissive licensing legally allows a project to go closed-source, effectively rugpulling its userbase, with no recourse.

I keep pushing this as an example, but imagine Bluesky corporate closed-sourcing ATproto and paywalling third-party and self-hosted PDSes once they run out of VC funding and need to start turning a profit somehow, since ATproto is permissively licensed rather than being copyleft licensed, they could do that.

By contrast, copyleft licenses ban this type of rugpulling and GPL3 calls out and bans tivoization (what RH does with the RHEL EULA) by name.

  • Of course the auto industry would be worried that they're seeing the effects of a problem they caused.... /sarcasm

  • the government can’t control them

    • They can use signal jammers to take them out pretty easily.
  • How soon before the Iron Firecurtain drops and the Fourth Reich blocks the entire internet and locks you into a state intranet like China and NK do?

  • GOS just partnered up with Motorola/Lenovo a couple days ago.

  • They make their own ARM silicon for datacenters, hypothetically they could just scale that down for consumer devices and there's your vertical integration.

Conversely if Apple ever wants to enter the datacenter market, they could scale their M-series silicon up to meet that industry's demands as well.

  • Windows will probably become a thin client/cloud OS as MS is already making moves in that direction with Windows 365 thin clients that were recently announced, and the fact that Win12 could be subscription-based.

I could easily see MS phasing out local Windows installs altogether in favor of a lower consumer-oriented Windows 365 subscription tier tied to the cheapest thin clients possible at some point.

  • Most POSes are running custom Android ROMs which are super locked down for PCI compliance nowadays; the only apps that are allowed are those provided by the POS company, basically.

The POS industry is lucky that custom ROMs are exempt from the upcoming Google lockdowns or they like other embedded device industries running on Android would be screwed.....

Here's the wiki page for PCI compliance, but the jist is in order for a POS to be able to process payment cards, it has to be crazy locked down for actually valid security purposes.

  • Surely it'll ship exclusively on MS thin clients too.

  • Wow, never thought I'd see a RHEL clone fully supporting KDE, let alone a 1:1 copy like Rocky is trying to be, nice!

  • And KeepAndroidOpen lists them as a contact.....

  • Generally, anything that isn't a Tesla because politics aside, Teslas are built terribly and are reportedly already falling apart, so not only is the Tesla brand saddled with baggage, but the cars themselves are built like crap.

Performance-wise if you're filthy rich, the Rimac Nevera is one of the fastest EVs in existence and snatched performance records left and right when it launched.

If you have mech and electrical skills, you could also build your own out of something like a Geo or an older Civic by swapping the gas drivetrain for the drivetrain out of a wrecked EV, although you'd need a custom controller for it.

  • I just blocked that instance on my end.

  • Think of how Wyse thin clients are typically ridiculously locked down, these are basically a newer version of those.

  • Assuming they're not ridiculously locked down, which they probably are.

  • Plus laws going after alternative OSes, no doubt lobbied for by MS to eliminate competition for Windows, are starting to creep in now, see Cali and Colorado.

Next step will be mandating SecureBoot and limiting OS selection to a short list of approved options.

And the end game will be thin clients connected to the cloud.

  • I know certain people in the US are probably clamoring to get their hands on this.

  • Good thing git itself is decentralized and self-hostable. Codeberg/Forgejo exists or you can spin up your own bare git repo.

You don't have to use Github, people, or even Gitlab for that matter as since Gitlab is ran by a for-profit company, it's only a matter of time before they go in the direction of Github as well.
