Easily the most overrated president imo. The fact that his signature economic policy, trickle down economics, has been shown to be empirically false, and yet people still love him, is astounding to me

This is why Reagan is deified:

Every politician in America has either been stroking it to these in memory, or in an attempt to replicate it for themselves. 46 years straight.

Reagan was a consummate showman and insanely lucky.

He orchestrated the Iran hostages being released on his Inauguration Day.

He was the one who came up with the gimmick of the President walking down the long hall to the podium. Before that you’d just see the President sitting at his desk. Another trick was to have Air Force One buzz whatever town he was visiting, then doing his presser on the tarmac, with the plane behind him.

When he first met Gorbachev he broke protocol and went out to greet Gorbachev when he came out of the car. Here’s Reagan in a great suit, looking fit and trim, and here’s Gorbachev, rumpled from a long ride and wearing an overcoat like a grandfather.

On the luck side. He had three Soviet leaders die one after another. Solidarity trade Union started before he was inaugurated. Afghanistan invasion turned into a nightmare. Chernobyl disaster.

Also he survived an actual assassination attempt. That alone got him 50 million votes*

        *no I didn’t count, I’m using hyperbole.

Yes, the ‘trickle down’ theory allows politicians all over the world to steal from the normal people and give to the rich in the name of a good economy. It’s wrong, hurting the economy and most of the people, but the rich doners love it.

It’s still being followed by the majority of right wing politicians.

Sure, I doubt these politicians would help me and you without this policy, but at least they would have to be a bit more honest about their goals.

The current US presidency proves he didn’t have to be any of those things and he’d still be fine

At least those are not “he ran on individualism, right? Individualism means self expression, so he’s personally responsible for all those eighties bangers!”, that is popular in the former Easern Bloc.

Don’t forget how we deregulated everything he could. Didn’t that work out so well for everybody? Then there was the news thing. Honest reporting? Who needs it, there’s ratings to be had out there.
