After season 2 or 3, they ran out of funny scenes to add, so they just kept adding stupid shit like yet another over long chicken fight or the 50th hurt knee gag.
Because if it’s barely funny once, keep doing it until it can never be funny again.
Part of it was (imo) a lack of good comedic timing to the point of aiming for antihumor.
The rake gag was funny because it was usually just a 5-10 second gag in scene and they moved on. It wasn’t some non sequitur that has little to no relation to the contents of the scene.

the rake gag was also funny because kelsey grammar was only paid for the first meep, then they doubled it up on the soundtrack. cheap studio bastards.
