Mine is decent if I’m not drunk driving. Recently missed an exit on the highway and had to drive another 5km. Also almost killed myself three times.

    Not doing that again.

Sense of direction, as in “I’m facing [cardinal direction]” is horrible. Ability to backtrack or reproduce previously taken routes is great.

I envy you. I’ve driven somewhere new with a GPS, then 5 minutes later use GPS again just so I can find home on the exact same route.

For me it’s about landmarks mnemonics. You know the old joke about getting directions in an old town, and the person goes “you go down this road until you see the red house on the left, then you take the next right turn. Pass the first three gas stations, and when you see the duck shaped pond you’re there. If you get to the tree with a bunch of branches missing, you’ve gone too far”? That’s me. I don’t even do it consciously, I’ll be on a family trip, my significant other will ask me if I’m sure where I’m going and I’ll answer “no, not really”, until 5 minutes later I’ll add “oh wait I remember that building, yeah we’re on the right track.”

Yea. I don’t consciously do it either. Just kinda an innate recognition. I couldn’t give directions to save a life but if ya follow my lead I could get you to damn near anywhere in my city as long as I have been there before.

Sense of literal direction? Very good actually.

Finding my way though streets and paths though. Pretty bad.

Sense of time, 15minuts or 2 hours. Is there a difference?

Roads do have names, but they’re unreliable indicators. Road names change quite often and sometimes there will be different roads in neighboring towns with the same name… not to mention very similar names like Maple St vs Maple Ave.

With my one city, there are two streets in separate parts of the city called “S College Road”.

Road naming gets hella dumb sometimes.

I can’t always immediately tell right from left, but generally know where north is; and have lived in the same place for so long I know where I am so well, could drive a taxi.

I kinda like getting lost but it doesn’t happen here.

And I HATE navigation, don’t like my phone yelling at me to turn right in 100 feet. I just want to actually know where I am, not have a path. When I worked farther away & had to drive I would go different ways every day. My husband thinks that’s funny, he would decide an ideal route and keep using it, but I want to explore.

Yeah, I hate how navigation apps seem to assume the user is only interested in the route and traffic conditions on that route. It would be so easy to add a compass that always shows which way is north. Hell, even road and city labels can be hard to find sometimes. I want an app to help with navigation, not be the be all end all.

Ah. We in Canada are about to embark on one of our favorite winter pastimes: Where in the white hell fuck is the goddamn road?!

This is my favorite game! I drove plows and was given one piece of advice that I’d like to pass on: Stay between the white lines!

Do that and you’re good! 👍

I misread at first and thought it said “I hope this a road.” Where I live there are a lot of unlit, unpaved “roads” that can go straight for miles before dead-ending at a cornfield, so it checks out.

One of my special interests before WW2 was survival, thinking it was just as important as learning to escape the ever-present threat of quick sand.

I learned how to get a sense of direction from the sun, but when that fails I think about the ordinal direction of a place I already know. I’m also really good at backtracking and orienting myself in the streets, based on familiar landmarks

I’m describing why I have a good sense of direction. I’m 30. This was probably about 25 years ago. I also don’t appreciate the implication.

One of my special interests before WW2

… And I just now realized that you meant that you were interested in ww2, not that you were alive and old enough to remember pre-ww2. Lol my bad

Living in Canada, this is also me during the daytime all winter. Most of the time it’s like “I’m following this car across some sort of white surface, I guess we’ll see.”
