My queer club members have repeatedly called me lobotomized as a “joke” and it really fucking sucks because I have brain damage and like several other things wrong that they just don’t care about.

imo the problem is less that narcissism gets used as an insult and over represented than that people accept the validity of it at all. The “personality disorder” stuff was explicitly taught to me as not actually valid/substantiated.

That’s true for any psychological diagnosis but what I’m pointing out is that “depression” is kinda provably real (or at least statistically valid) in a way that cluster b stiff is very much not

Edit: it wasn’t my intention for this to come across dismissive but to point out that cluster b is almost literally just a doctor deciding you’re an asshole instead of there being a real disorder

we do it on this website a lot but also calling someone a “debate lord” or “debate pervert” is an ableist slur

some neurodivergent conditions (such as adhd) cause people to argue in ways they cannot easily let go. this is especially bad when someone tells you they are neurodivergent and you keep disparaging them

Others have already pointed out the most important things and I just want to add that “jobless” as an insult reinforces the capitalist direct economic interests. Not begging for a job if you’re in a situation where you can afford it is solidarity with workers. And of course most unemployed people have disabilities, diagnosed or not.

the point of it is to say “lmao you clearly spend too much time online and it’s rotting your brain”

I have never thought this about the phrase “jobless behavior” and i don’t think it’s the meaning most people think of.

And as for saying removed or psychotic, like genuine question, where is the line? Because every single insult is like that, by nature: removed mocks disabled people, but so does idiot, moron, stupid… Psychotic is mocking people with mental issues, but so does insane, delusional, demented and more.

The line is at insults about immutable characteristics. The person you want to insult isn’t going to be the only person who sees or hears the insult 99% of the time and anyone who shares the disability or other characteristic being mocked will know that they are seen as lesser by you.

If you can’t think of an insult that doesn’t use ableist terms, that’s your problem.

      chud

If this word has truly changed to be an insult about physical appearance rather than political leanings i would stop using it.

The variety of insults available to me is far less important than helping my comrades feel safe and accepted.

If you can’t think of an insult that doesn’t use ableist terms, that’s your problem.

The point of my comment is that I challenge you to find one, because the way I see it it is literally impossible to. Every insult that is hurtful originates from a negatively viewed property that people can have, and any negative property can manifest in an immutable way.

For example, “chud” originates (or at least was massively popularised by) the chudjak, a caricature Patrick Crusius, a far-right incel mass shooter who was massively mocked for his appearance. It was always about that. So if you use that you’re also mocking a bunch of young single men who are or feel ugly or socially inept, who will likely think you think less of them.

Also, terms like heartless can be hurtful to people who have mental disorders that prevent them from being empathetic, but I’ve never seen anyone get mad at that.

You can say you don’t use it that way but that’s what people say about “idiot” or “retard”. They say it’s just about mocking behavior, and they’re not referring to any immutable characteristic.

This is where Chud actually comes from and I know people who have ben using it for decades. So no, it was not always about whatever “that” is:

yeah, that’s why I qualified my statement, it was popularized by the chudjak, but regardless, wouldn’t comparing people to a movie perhaps have something to do with their appearance? No need to reverse gish gallop.

The (admittedly imperfect) urban dictionnary definitions almost all mention appearance: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=chud, and I can confirm this anectodally, so it’s at least widely used to mock, by comparing one to something unnatractive.

Again, how is this different from the insults in the post? It’s insulting someone by attacking an unchangeable characteristic, by comparing them either to a monster or well, another type of monster.

How can you say “jobless behaviour” is bad while defending “chud”?

I mostly hear “chud” used to describe right-wing politicians and their supporters who push for policies that destroy people’s lives as if they are not human themselves and feed off the working class. It might have been put on your radar by 4chan or chudjak, but that is certainly not universal.

How can you say “jobless behavior” is bad while defending “chud”?

I have never heard or seen someone use “jobless behavior” before this post, so I have no idea what you are talking about there. But calling someone a fictional, non-human, cannibalistic character because they want to enslave brown people and destroy the healthcare system doesn’t seem particularly ableist to me.

I only took jobless behavior as an example because it’s in the post, it’s an online thing.

But by your logic, it’s okay for me to call someone a retard if they’re a bad person, since the term originated in a non-offensive description of a type of behavior (as in, it was a behavioral diagnosis). Obviously that’s untrue, it’s how the word was used which matters, and chud was and is largely used functionally identically to calling someone ugly.

The point I’m making, again, isn’t a judgement on “chud” specifically, it was just an example, you can take heartless, or hillbilly, you cannot insult someone without it being a slur, I’ll shut up about it if you can give me a good counter-example, but everyone is just gesturing vaguely at their existence and not actually saying it.

But by your logic, it’s okay for me to call someone a removed if they’re a bad person,

This whole thread sounds like you just want permission to call people slurs that the auto-mod deletes, which I am not interested in at all.

you cannot insult someone without it being a slur

This argument is not about how slurs are bad. It’s about how ablism is bad. Calling someone a “fucking asshole” or a “piece of shit” is a slur and is not ableist. And I encourage you to call shitty people shitty.

We are already talking about a counter-example. “Chud” is a fictional, non-human creature that lives underground and eats people. People in your online circle have used to it be a synonym of “ugly” but that doesn’t make the term ableist. It just makes your friends ableist assholes.

I don’t know what word of yours keeps getting removed and really don’t want to know. I assume it is the r-slur, which, you need to stop using and if you don’t stop using it, you are a human sized piece of shit.

(above is a great example of how to be mean to someone without being ableist).

The point of my comment is that I challenge you to find one, because the way I see it it is literally impossible to.

Guess you’re just incurious. If I thought there was no way to insult someone without invoking a term that refers to a historically marginalized group i simply wouldn’t insult people.

If I thought there was no way to insult someone without invoking a term that refers to a historically marginalized group i simply wouldn’t insult people.

You just did though, the dip in dipshit means something like “insane, stupid person”, you could say it’s antiquated and not used that way anymore, but I think many people would argue the same for words like idiot, or even more contested ones.

…and anyway, if, as the post says, “jobless behavior” is ableist because it implies being jobless is bad, and disabled people have a hard time getting jobs, wouldn’t using “uneducated” as a pejorative as you just did be ableist too, since disabled people have a harder time getting educated?

Seriously, think about it, I don’t think there is a way to be insulting without using a slur (by the post’s definition of one), you certainly haven’t given a good example, at least.

I’m not in a position to define the word slur but unless a word has been popularly used to denigrate or otherize a group of people it’s not a slur.

Cracker, while an insult based on an immutable characteristic, is not a slur as white people are not an oppressed group.

I’m trying to say it’s contextual, and so I disagree with the post saying that “jobless” or “psychotic” are ableist even when not used as such, since it’s completely arbitrary if you see words that way. I would say that psychotic and retard trip the line enough for me to not use them (although I have not ableist friend who use it as a synonym for stupid), but that’s mostly down to how it would come off to most people, stuff like crazy or stupid are fine to say, imo, since they’re basically only used to mock how people act.

I’m not sure I got my point across well, lmk.

Also as a note, I agree with your example, but cracker would be a slur if it was used against a white minority in a country, and many languages do have equivalents that are slurs. It’s also not really an insult, the only people I’ve seen get offended by that are snowflakes.

I wouldn’t write it out because of the social consequences, but yeah I basically think it’s okay to say any word in an academic context, the offense comes from the way it’s used, it’s not a magical arrangement of syllables that are suddenly evil. Call me crazy but saying “jobless behavior” doesn’t feel comparable to the other examples, like, the point of it is to say "lmao you clearly spend too much time online and it’s rotting your brain”

Why say ”jobless”, then? Something like ”log off” or ”touch grass” is a good alternative that’s not shaming someone for not being employed.

And as for saying removed or psychotic, like genuine question, where is the line? Because every single insult is like that, by nature: removed mocks disabled people, but so does idiot, moron, stupid… Psychotic is mocking people with mental issues, but so does insane, delusional, demented and more.

      yeah-buddy

You shouldn’t use those terms either, because they’re ableist, and so is ”crazy” for that matter.

Also, stuff like “chud” mocks people for their physical appearance and lack of success in life.

What? The term ”chud” has nothing to do with those things, it’s slang for any stereotypical right wing asshole.
