I already got Luanti (Minetest) and Xonotic but I thought I’d ask.
Infra Arcana
Traditional roguelike with lovecraftian horror inspiration. It’s hella hard but also weirdly relaxing after a few tries, plus the ambiance is exquisite.
Mindustry
not a poor man’s factorio
Is really fun, has two main game modes: Erekir (Classic, high skill ceiling, less hand holdy) and serpulo (More polished, Easier and more straightforward)
0a.d
Age of empires, I loved AoE2 and this game scratches that itch too.
Here are my favourite complete (not beta or prototype) FOSS games.
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
X-Piratez (openxcom mod about lesbian space pirates, haven’t played it but looks like it has very deep lore and complex mechanics)
Warzone 2100 (RTS)
Battle for Wesnoth (TBS)
Mindustry (Factorio-like but more casual)
0 A.D. (RTS similar to Age of Empires)
Beyond All Reason (RTS similar to Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander)
openTTD (transport tycoon)
There are a surprising number of good open source RTS games due to the spring engine.

Beyond all reason is good fun.
Openrct2 openttd xmage
good Owl

I’ve been meaning to tell u that u have good taste in image formats :3
I will fry before I start using AV1 for images. Using it for video is bad enough but the alternative is HEVC soooooooo
Why yes thank you
AV1 also doesn’t have sick progressive loading or animation support or any of the cool shit JXL has…

Not poster children for modern FLOSS, but two fun oldies
Slash’em is an old NetHack GUI mod, but it is so much fun.
In the same genre, Elona Plus (download link here) is ancient, open source, super weird but extremely content-filled. And continues to be updated to this day. I’ve probably spent 100 hours on it over the years.
Ty for the reminder that Elona exists :3 Uhhhhh suddenly remembering all the “problematic” shit in that game as fun as it can be…
Also Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is fun and maybe easier to get into than NetHack in some respects
I’ve played a little tiny bit of that game, what is problematic in it?
The Dark Mod is an awesome tribute to the Thief series, but often goes unmentioned in threads like this for some reason. Arguably, it’s even better than Thief at this point, and has new content added on a regular basis by it’s community.
It used to be (I believe) a Quake mod back in the old times, hence the name, but it’s long since been transitioned to a standalone game with a different engine.

It’s just a little jank for my tastes. It feels very much like Thief 3, which personally I love but a lot of people didn’t, and was undeniably not as good as Thief 1 and 2.
SRB2Kart with mods is a better Mario Kart
source: https://github.com/STJr/Kart-Public
a silly video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BgUQB2kjPs
SRB2Kart is a kart racing mod based on the 3D Sonic the Hedgehog fangame Sonic Robo Blast 2, based on a modified version of Doom Legacy.
god I love this kind of shit
ring racers is the latest version, actually
it’s a fully fledged game now
oh man i love ring racers but it is not an easy game to learn, my friends just wanna keep playing SRB2Kart
mods-wise srb2kart is the winner, you can play as sans and shit. ring racers is more of a singleplayer experience at this point
This one? https://github.com/KartKrewDev/RingRacers
Also, nice to see you again comrade 😁
FUCK YES RING RACERS WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
And a playable 2d rocket league
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Do people still like Veloren? It’s like FOSS Minecraft and then some
I like Veloren, but it is not FOSS Minecraft, and that misapprehension made it a lot harder for me to get into it at first. Veloren is much more like a traditional RPG, and doesn’t really have the free-form creative aspects of Minecraft.
lmao this game has HRT: https://wiki.veloren.net/wiki/Hastened_Reformation_Tincture
SuperTuxKart is a silly yet fun one
Simon Tatham’s Puzzles. 40 different puzzle games. It’s in the Debian repository and it’s on F-droid. The package in Debian is called sgt-puzzles.
Gotta shout out The Battle for Wesnoth on the turn-based strategy end of things. Twenty-three years on and still going strong with a plethora of user-made campaigns and multiplayer.
I never played much of it, but Battle for Wesnoth is very polished and entirely a free culture project - all game assets have free licenses that allow reuse and remixing, not just the code.
I’m not sure its FOSS, but its available in repositories so there is some degree of it being FOSS.
I really like Endless Sky; its basically a rebuild of Escape Velocity, and I think it’s a great game.
It’s a 2D space opera, you start out as a small shuttler and work your way up to massive fleets.
I don’t remember much about Escape Velocity, but Endless Sky has a pretty decent story as well.
