I find it disturbing that some Americans glorify violence but vilify love and sex.

    • Blood, dismemberment, decapitation? PG13
    • Sex? Rated-R
    • The F word more than one time? Rated-R
    • Okay with public executions, but drag shows are too much.

    Bread has become expensive,

There are reason why public execution is bad idea and abolished for good, it waste of time and ultimately just propaganda tools to incite fear for masses, until that fear turn to rage, the rest is history.

More fool me! Here I was thinking nothing that America’s Trump administration could do or say, no matter how politically and morally bankrupt, no matter how venal or violent, was capable of shocking me any longer. Then I woke to today’s news that one of the Trump cabinet’s bigger boofheads – the uber Christian nationalist, crusader-fantasist and “secretary of war” Pete Hegseth had announced that America would have a public firing squad execution of murderer Nidal Hasan. Reckless global militarisation including a threat at the UN to annihilate Iran, a litany of sexual misconduct allegations against the commander in chief, claims of blatant presidential corruption … they have all ceased to surprise and shock us, so inured has the world become to Donald Trump’s monstrous narcissism and maladministration. But now we have execution TV. Tune in to the livestream on Thursday 3 December to watch a military firing squad shoot the life out of Hasan, the former army psychiatrist who killed 13 people at a US army base in 2009.State-sanctioned killing as entertainment! Yes, the world’s supposedly greatest (or formerly greatest) democracy has arrived at an horrific new moral nadir. The fact that America remains Australia and the west’s most relied-upon and trusted ally despite the global wrecking ball the second Trump administration has proved to be, was already cause for deep concern. But being so closely allied to a country that now wants to turn the execution of a human being – no matter what their crimes – into a live entertainment event, promises to redefine depravity. Given that American states continue to execute so many convicted criminals, where might the United States ultimately draw the line? No doubt the ilk of Hegseth in American society – and elsewhere – will count down the days until they can tune in to the live coverage of Hasan’s execution in droves. Might the audience cry out for more – for livestream cameras in the death chambers across the land of the free? How would this populist administration respond? If you think it is a fanciful question, consider how far American governance and presidential values have slid in the moral murk in the past two years alone. Meanwhile, it is hard to contemplate a more audacious appeal to American society’s darker angels than this looming entertainment event. But there we are. We have arrived. Pass the popcorn, Don, and Pete! It would be heartening today to hear political leaders the world over condemn Hegseth and Trump’s planned introduction of Ghoul TV. But let us please start in Australia, where federal governments have for a long-time opposed capital punishment – let alone turning it into a public spectacle. Will the prime minister and his senior ministers stand up and condemn without qualification this depraved plan for America to livestream an execution? What about the leaders of other political parties here, some of whom have, after all, supported capital punishment? We are waiting. Meanwhile, how much further into the moral quagmire must America wallow before Australia rethinks its craven military dependence on Washington – not least via the reckless shackling of our strategic reliance to the US via the $368bn (and counting) Aukus submarine deal? Announcing America’s decision to turn killing into a form of entertainment, Hegseth said: “It was a radical Islamist attack in uniform inside the ranks, and so he’s going to get a firing squad of soldiers, as it should be, and we’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand there’s serious consequences for these types of things.” America’s defence department later confirmed the execution would be livestreamed. This represents a significant lurch in the US from civilisation towards savagery. You cannot choose your family. But you can choose your friends and allies. And you can also tell them firmly when they have careened off the ethical rails. Actions speak louder than words. And this planned livestreamed execution says it all about what is happening in America today, opening the window ever wider on the Trump administration’s moral vacuity and its paucity of human decency. • Paul Daley is a Guardian Australia columnist

because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things

Everyone understands that. That’s not a question.

All this will do is provide something inside these terror networks to play over and over and over to their recent converts. A public execution of these radical attacks only serves to encourage more of the exact same thing. There’s no part of it that’s discouraging.

These terror networks will literally play it over and over again. They will tell their people. “Hasan killed 13 of them and he is now dead and in heaven for his actions. The US will make you all martyrs and your kin will know your acts.”

Like Hegseth has literally no clue who he is dealing with. The people who he acts like this will discourage, all it will do is make happier to jump at the chance to have the same thing happen to them. He’s going to make the best recruitment tool for these terror organizations.

They’re all definitely stupider than shit, but idk if they’d care even if they did understand. They want more terrorist attacks because they think that will get them reelected and they pretty obviously don’t give a crap about who gets hurt in their quest for power.

You think they don’t want that? The more terror attacks on Americans the more they can push for the totalitarian police state to protect us.

It’s what Israel has been doing by funding Hamas and splintering Palestine.

I don’t think its accurate to say that Hegseth doesn’t know what he is doing.

Making the execution public is on purpose, so the question is what purpose does it serve.

      1. The most obvious seems to be about ego, and being a “tough guy” Hegseth (and Trump) are obsessed with being seen as strong men, and they think a public execution makes them seem tough

      2. Terror, the next most obvious is that this is a part of the regimes ongoing terrorism campaign against Americans. Hegseth (and republicans in general) are telling people that they will find and execute anybody they think is an enemy.

“Speaking to Real America’s Voice, Hegseth made clear that the decision was deliberate. “We’re gonna make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” he said.”

      1. Desensitization seems to be next. The constant ramping up of violence, and the political celebration of violence is a pretty deliberate attempt to make government run violence a normal part of life.

      2. Precedent is probably on this list. Now that the Regime can publicly execute people for terrorism, they can publicly execute anybody. They have already said that anybody who is against fascism is a terrorist, and they already have assaulted, imprisoned and killed people for it. Now they are setting a precedent that they can do it legally.

      3. Pissing off Muslims and making more enemies is probably here too. The regime needs people to blame atrocities on, when Trump nukes Los Angeles, he is going to want to blame it on “extremists.” It fuels his forever war, and gives him an unlimited supply of support from people that don’t look too hard. This seems to be rather low on the list, since the regime already lies about everything, and lying about muslim terrorists is probably easier than telling the truth about muslim terrorists, but anything to cloud the waters is probably a bonus.

All the guy wanted was to die a martyr. He said so at his sentencing. Not only is this not going to show serious consequences but encourage future terrorists like you pointed out.

That said, Hegseth would be all too happy to encourage more violence on US citizens if it means ramping up the security apparatus and eroding citizen rights. No better than Netanyahu allowing Oct 7th to be as murderous as possible.

They don’t give a shit about Islamic terrorism. This is just another push of the Overton window.

If you think this will be the only live streamed execution, you’re in for a bad time.

Honestly, there is much greater than a 0% chance that Hegseth didn’t understand serious consequences until he himself was exposed to it, so he thinks everyone else needs that type of awakening.

100%. The guy didn’t do it thinking he’d get away with it or the US military would give him a slap on the wrist at his court martial. He intentionally tried to get the death penalty.

No, he understands very well the fascist economy needs enemies. If you gave Petey-pie a button that cleanly deleted Islam from the planet, he’d never press it because he can’t function without an opposing religious extreme…

For a sillier analogy, Batman and the Joker fight all the time but can’t exist without each other.

It degenerates the society that makes it a spectacle.

Everyone knows shooting sprees are bad but people still do them in spite of the punishments.
