  • Not while it's at sea. The whole point is illegal containers pass all the way through ports without any knowledge of their contents. We've had fireworks busts at port. You know how many people got charged for that? Zero. No one could be proven to be responsible. And drones don't even need to make it to through the very limited inspections we have at port. Or even travel to the United States at all. San Diego is like 30 miles from a major Mexican shipping hub.

The police and surveillance state will not protect us. Because it is and has always been a sham. Being as secure as you imagine would restrict profit, annoy consumers, and require manpower they don't want to pay for. They'd rather just take the hit and funnel the money through arms manufacturers for the response.

  • It doesn't even need to be something exotic. Drones can fit in shipping containers and be launched either from a warehouse or the ship itself. Fully visible, just with a fake manifest. Ukraine performed a drone attack deep into Russia by transporting the drones in pre built tiny houses and having unsuspecting truck drivers move them into position.

  • A nation that has made war on multiple countries within the last year is not fit to host an international sports event. More teams should drop out.

  • Neither bottles nor cans will actually explode because the difference between the cabin and sea level air pressure isn't that much and the containers are already able to handle some. When you'd open a plastic bottle you'd get a bit of a pop. And if you drank most of the bottle and resealed it, it'd crumple when you returned to sea level.

The effect only applies to gas since it's compressible under pressure. Liquid isn't, so it doesn't matter what the outside pressure is. So the cans (and full bottles) might have a little pop from the gas at the top and it might be a little fizzier at altitude, but most of the volume is liquid so it's not that much.

  • I live in Hawaii, which has banned most fireworks and gets almost every import by ship that comes through a handful of ports. We're blanketed with fireworks every New Years anyway. Literal shipping containers full of gunpowder. Just mixed in with all the legal goods. We've also had Chinese fishing vessels in US waters multiple times without consequence.

It's not about being invisible, it's about looking like you're doing mundane things until you're not. Most ships don't have schedules that are both known by the US and precise enough that dropping anchor would be meaningful. And all they need is a shipping container of drones to do some real damage to infrastructure. That's nothing.

I can totally believe this is bullshit by Trump, but it's not because doing it would be especially hard or implausible.

  • "I understand that the landlord needs to get paid."

Seems like any time the federal government tells a worker they need to work without pay they should also mandate that all their debts and rent should be paused as well.

  • I don't know that the TSA is a repository of true believers. They've mostly seem bored and annoyed when I've passed through.

  • Air travel was cooler when your soda bottle was an all in one demonstration of altitude and air pressure.

  • So now your objection is the idea of launching from boat rather than how could they possibly get drones to within striking distance of the US?

And you think the idea of pre-deploying $35k drones for potential conflict against a president that has been antagonistic to them for almost a decade is infeasible? The county that is known for using proxy forces and smuggling weapons?

  • Boy, do I have news for you about how weakly controlled shipping is. There are so many ships moving around with legit seeming purposes that actually do things they're not supposed to. And sometimes the people who crew and own the ship aren't even from the place the ship is registered!

It's not like they'd be loading satellite visible drones from an Iranian port on an Iranian flagged container ship post attack and then running full steam toward San Diego.

  • Do you think all of Iran's drones are exclusively inside Iran or at no point during this highly telegraphed military buildup could they have "unaffiliated" dockworkers load crates onto an "unaffiliated" ship? This isn't a particularly complex plan we're taking about here and international shipping is probably the least controlled transport system in the entire world.

  • It directly says how in the post summary.

  • Favorability polls are not election choice polls. I voted for Harris and would rate both her and Trump as unfavorable.

We shouldn't run either of them though. We could actually choose a candidate people like.

  • It's like one step up from Joe Rogan disclaiming his own words because he's a self-proclaimed dumbass. It's a self-aware statement from an elderly man acknowledging the things he says may be wrong but he just doesn't care to spend his time trying to be accurate, but from a president and the center of a bluster-based regime it's shocking.

  • And in doing so not only didn't show the president doing embarrassing and disrespectful things, it showed entirely different coffins. Friends and family may have seen that footage and thought it was their loved one only to learn their chosen propaganda-entertainment-news channel thought their coffins were interchangeable props.

  • We should not consider Israeli newspapers as credible sources of information on any wars they're involved in.

  • I'm sure the courts will have this resolved by around when the invasion of Cuba is wrapping up.

  • I remember when I first heard that they were elevating his son my mind jumped to it being a young and dynamic war time figurehead. Someone who could grab a gun and pose with the troops for propaganda. Then I remembered that the former guy was 86. All these leaders are so fucking old their children already have gray hairs. This guy fought in the Iran-Iraq War back in the 80s.
