I’ll be honest I didn’t actually watch the video and just wanted to call Kurzgesagt a bootlicker while taking it as an article of faith that anything he produces is slop.

Every single month a new story is released about how “AI just crossed a terrifying line” and the solution provided is usually “keep giving us more money so we can fix the problem we created” instead of " execute all techbro CEOs"

    Tragic.

Yep exactly. It’s not ‘AI crossed a terrifying threshold, stop using it now’. It’s ‘AI crossed a terrifying threshold keep using it’. If it were as frightful as they say, then they’d tell us to stop using LLMs and normalising the use of these platforms.

Rather, they want to 1) present themselves as the experts to be within the regulation and national direction of ‘AI’ (shape the policy favourably) and 2) regulate against Chinese ‘AI’.

(None of these are my own thoughts, they’re variously cobbled together from Mack Attack, Eric Morrison and Ed Zitron)

They put a single, dismissive line in the video:

[…] many people accuse the AI sector that all of this is nothing but marketing to inflate the value of their product by claiming it to be so incredibly powerful. The reality is, we don’t know the full story […]

So nice to see an unbiased educational channel /s. I guess it’s good that their conclusion is that we need safety and oversight, but for some reason they don’t explain that the only way this industry becomes safe is if every AI company is burned to the ground and no one replaces the gap they leave.

I recently watched a talk of industry experts on the AI bullshit and one line I’ll paraphrase stuck with me.

“They keep claiming the AI has gone rogue but then they point out how their so-called safety features fail to prevent it from doing harm and it’s bullshit. If a car company makes their cars with cardboard brake-pads when those brake-pads fail and cause damage we wouldn’t say ‘oh, that car went rogue!’ We’d call it for what it is: defective.”
