I don’t really mind it when a film combines characters, especially for a franchise as extensive as LoR. There’s no way they could develop every minor character and still keep up the pacing for a film, let alone hire an actor for each character. I consider it a good compromise.

Doubly so since it gives a woman a modicum of agency in a series where they basically have none.

(I do appreciate that Eowyn is portrayed as struggling for self-determination and that the fantasy setting generally echoes medieval Europe and its social mores, but even then, her portrayal fails the Bechdel test in both book and film.)

I’ve read the books. Tom was completely irrelevant and leaving him out of the movies was the right move.

“Irrelevant”? Feh.Tom was the only one that flipped off the war (that whatever “higher power” wanted to see their Maiar suckups & watered-down Quendi struggle through, etc.) to instead go fuck & frolic with his river nymph wife.

IMHO, if they left him (them) in, more people might’ve been inspired to do similar IRL… Can’t have that, now can we? 😅😶

Tom is the one who gave Merry the anti-Angmar sword that dispelled the Witch King’s invulnerability.
