When I was studying in Taiwan I met at least a few students who were very thin, and they said that they were only eating enough to stay under the minimum weight requirement for conscription. Overall I didn’t meet many people who seemed willing to fight the PLA, despite Kaohsiung also being a more “green” (DPP, separatist) area.
I think if push came to shove, they’d choose reunification at this point. We know they want the status quo because it’s beneficial to them to have US money but mainland visa privileges. But they don’t want to fight anybody and surely aren’t going to sacrifice themselves for US interests.
