i can only speak about the irish side of things, but idk, in the same vein of “nazi punks fuck off”, i’m delighted to see people using irish & celtic designs etc when doing explicitly anti-fascist stuff.

i want the fascists trying to take those symbols from us to know that their views are shit & fascism isn’t welcome in any non-fascist community

from the nordic side, i would love to agree but it’s all contextual. the filigree and general style is usually fine but the space is fully coopted by nazis, metalheads, and nazi metalheads. they wear that shit publically.

like, there was an mp for the sweden democrats (the party started as a swedish offshoot of the BNP) who got media attention last year for having a futhark-runic tattoo on his neck. he claimed he just thought it looked cool and didn’t know what it said but it was quite obvious that it spelled out “ADOLF”.

all to say that one symbol is probably okay, but putting them together is always going to look suspicious. like that gog newsletter where they put a bunch of symbols for old slavic religions next to eachother, which all have in common that they’re used by east-european nazis.

fraktur was banned by the nazis. Its antique//antikva thats the nazi font

edit: this might not even be fraktur looks more like textura to me tbh

edit 2: its definitely way more a spin on textura style blackletters than gothic fraktur, notice the distinct ‘s’ shape not being in the shape of the long s: ſ

IMO nazis shouldnt be allowed to own any symbol. they cant come up with their own so they always coopt and ruin deep historical traditions instead.

but if you’re gonna call any font type out for being dog whistly, at least call out the correct one, was more my point :)

im from scandinavia and have a few buddies who are active in revivalist norse religious movement, and despite MULTIPLE warning about nazis NOT being welcome, they still have to refuse a few chuds at the door every month or so. I definitely know of the struggle.

the entire blackletter style segment is sometimes referred to as “fraktur”. and while hitler did indeed ban it, that wasn’t until 1941. from 1933 until then it was “the german font”.

edit: interestingly, the reason given for banning it, was that the font they called fraktur was closer to textura (schwabacher), which was seen as a “jewish font” whatever the hell that means.

if you know that hitler personally didn’t like it, yeah. but the nazis in general did, so that’s what people know.

and again, a single symbol means very little. however when two seemingly unrelated symbols with a shared history are brought together, the effect is to allude to that shared history.

depends. If we surrender these aesthetics to the fascists then weve lost the battle in advance. Its huge hassle to eternally have to kick nazis out of the revivalist norse religious movements fx. The few friends i have that are active participants in suvh a community often share how exhausting it is to have to eternally kick off the chuds who just wanna LARP despite the many warnings that they are NOT welcome. This only happens because a lot of peoe accept the narrative that norse religious symbols = fascist, but if you actually speak with the people who are seriously invested in that mythology, that assumption is shown to near opposite of the truth.

as always, the fucks are just tryna corrupt and coopt anything cool. And my way of combatting that is explicit pushback of their limp dicked attempts at it. It is on a deep level appaling to me that we as a society are comfortable signing off these deep pieces of history as just ‘nazi shit’

the hindu peace symbol might be tainted for good. fucking wish it werent.

maybe it’s a difference of perspective, but when you grow up surrounded by runestones and old viking villages you learn to differentiate the larpers on sight. they’ve not coopted the symbol itself, only its use in a certain context. a bit like how the sauvastika is usually completely fine because it’s the “wrong way round”, but if you tilt it 45 degrees it’s obvious what they were intending it to mean.

I don’t agree with every anarchist idea, but this I agree with completely. You really don’t need to know anything more about the circumstances of a person’s life if you notice them stealing food.

On a related note, but a somewhat non-anarchist take, pay your taxes and vote for politicians that support public programs. Shelters, halfway homes, soup kitchens and food banks do a lot of good. Also donate and/or volunteer if you’re able!

Mmm, and we do like to make extreme arguments just to score holier-than-thou points, don’t we?

There will always be something wrong. Taxes still fund public services. The need for those services doesn’t go away just because some of the money is diverted to atrocities.

If you actually want to end genocidal conduct, your personal taxes are not the place to fight that battle, and trying to fight it by yourself doesn’t make you a hero. Collective action with a like-minded group is the most successful way to actually change things.

As far as Lemmy goes, absolutely. We also have plenty of edgelords vilifying and alienating others on their side by calling them nazis and shit because they can’t find a better outlet for their infinite rage while sitting in the shitter and the comfort of anonymity. Absolute class warriors by their own standards.

I will say as someone who does volunteer work for homeless individuals PLEASE do your research if you decide to donate to a shelter. Many are corporate run and the money usually stays at the top amongst the board. There is something called “the Homeless Industry” and a lot of shelters that are run by companies are in it for a profit via government grants/funds not to help the individuals that utilize the shelters. Many places get funds based on how many beds/cots/mats on the ground/chairs they can keep occupied on a given night so for these places its in their best interest to ensure their tenants stay in the shelter system, not get out of it.

Yeah, part of the reason I consider volunteering as better than donating, but not everyone has the time. It’s more difficult to embezzle labor.

Charities in general mostly pay their directors and executives obscene compensation while they get the glory of being the faces of charity. These positions are often given to connected people, like the relatives of business executives, politicians, or the rich and connected.

The Red Cross is notorious for this, for decades.

Never donate to a corporate charity, asking for your extra change at the cash out. Give it to someone directly.

Feel like it does depend a bit on the food they are stealing. Are we taking someone stealing essentials or luxuries? I don’t feel so sympathetic if you are stealing caviar and expensive champaign compared to someone stealing a bag of potatoes.

The first is typically organised crime with the intent to resell it at a profit. The second is someone who is desperate to eat.

Food is food. Period. Stop with this arbitrary delineations of what other people “deserve”.

Again, food is food and people deserve free and ready access to food. That’s all there is to it.

And organised crime against local shops isn’t something we should be supporting. When the target is a massive corporation, ehh, don’t care quite so much.

To be fair, not aware of any local independent caviar shops. But there are a few with nice wines and spirits. I don’t think theft against them should be encouraged. Shouldn’t we support the local gin distillery?

I think the applicability of this really depends on the circumstances.

    • if I see someone stealing basic necessities (people in need steal basic food items, not caviar and £300 bottles of champagne), then sure, I didn’t see anything.
    • if I see someone waltz into a small mom and pop store and swipe a whole shelf of expensive shit, then that’s a different story. I don’t give a damn that it’s only a few bottles of whiskey, mate, you’re clearly not stealing food because you’re in need
    • and if I see someone stealing a truckload of food going to a food bank, you can bet your tushie there will be fists flying…
