One of the major drawbacks of self hosted software is the “entry fee” - aka how “expensive” (bothersome) it is to onboard a non-tech person.
For a well thought out stack (service routing and discovery, authorisation/authentication, etc.), this can be quite simple: send them a link to register, and provide a landing page where they can download appropriate client apps (and for apps that support it, create provisioning links).
This can make for an almost Google/Apple level integration. Log in, click link, app opens, you log in again (with OIDC it’s pretty simple), and done, you’re set up.
Most likely it was discovered during the butchering of beavers.
Beaver pelt was a highly valued product on the American frontier for hundreds of years. A whole trade was built around it. And given the circumstances of the first ~200 years of Europeans colonising Northern America, they wouldn’t have wasted the rest of the animal just for the pelt - what little meat every beaver had would’ve been used.
So you’re out there, butchering a beaver, grabbing it by the pu… anus, and you notice that even though you washed the carcass, there’s some oily residue on your gloves/hand after pressing around the area. It’s not something you’ve seen before, but you know very well how valuable all sorts of animal oils (tallow, pig fat, especially whale blubber) are, so you check it out. First thing you do is smell it… and damn, it smells GOOD. Maybe you’ve even had a bit of vanilla before as a treat, and recognise the scent being similar. Then you taste it, just a lick… and it’s just like that piece of cake you had at the fancy cake shop ages ago as a kid. Or not recognise it but realise it’s tasting good.
Either way, you just found a potentially usable resource. Spices and seasonings are still a luxury, so you tell others about it, after all, who wouldn’t want to make some extra money on the work they’re already doing?
And suddenly people want it. Vanilla is scarce and expensive, people like the flavour, and beavers are plentiful. You extract some oil, take it to the town chemist who checks it, deems it safe to use, and BAM, you have a new revenue stream, all you have to do is 30 minutes of extra work on the beavers you caught - wash the ass, express the anal glands for their oils, collect it up, and sell it by vials.
Most discoveries happen like that. Yes, to us it sounds weird, who the hell goes around licking asses of animals for hidden secrets? But in reality you were just making use of something, and found an extra resource.

Hey now, how do you know that OP isn’t one of those freaks who goes in with fingers and pulls the turds out?
I don’t think so, I mean, it cost $2bn just to turn the lights on at that place! And that was 1995 2 billion, not hyperinflated 2026 2 billion!
But I thought that THAT Stargate project had its own naquadah and naquadriah based generators for decades now?
But I thought the Stargate project was the US government’s current big AI thing?

Yeah.
And Moses split the Gulf of California to deliver his people to the promised land… Baja California.

With all the cameras being re-patriated by good citizens, I’m sure a number of them already made their way to skilled hackers, tinkerers.
And given how amateurish Flock was with their most recent PR event (a reporter tried to attend, got rejected almost last minute, Flock even went behind his back to cancel his hotel booking, so our guy went full out and with a metric fuckton of RF equipment, monitored the event’s signals. WiFi, Bluetooth, wireless mics (which they often left on and just broadcasting out into the wild), I have a feeling that the whole Flock ecosystem is riddled with security issues.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some incredibly dumb stupid kill switch built into the firmware that can be triggered by something as simple as an ESP32.
I thought that was under Cheyenne Mountain?

The goal of the Fediverse is to provide access to everyone equally.
That includes the normies. The average people who don’t necessarily want big brain discussions on social media but to scroll a bit, kill ten minutes on the shitter while reading feelgood stories, and like a few mainstream memes.
That’s not killing the Fediverse. In fact if you want to avoid it… you can filter out these accounts. That’s the beauty of it. There’s no algorithm to force feed you political opinion, propaganda, agenda, one-sided news, etc. - it’s all up to you.
I’m autistic
I was referring to the well known joke that most autistic people - myself included - are incredibly peculiar about having the right utensil. Not every spoon, fork and knife are made equal, and the shape, finish, curvature, details, etc. can easily make one feel “wrong”. The spoons pictured are, while nicely done from a visual standpoint, all over the place when I comes to these properties. Hence my joke.
Okay let me get this straight…
This dude finds $30, and the police is on him like he broke into Fort Knox.
I get my £1500 phone snatched from my hands by an asswipe riding a motorbike, I have the license plate etc., and best they can do is half-ass the report not once, not twice, but three times so I have to come by for a fourth time just so I can pay my insurance £250 to get my phone replaced?
Congratulations! You’ve just angered 999 out of 1000 autists!
Just because I walked the distance it doesn’t mean I went to McD…
These are all distances I’ve walked a number of times… often drunk.
Funny thing is… there’s 10+ McDonald’s’ within walking distance of Big Ben.

It’s flock cameras all the way down.
VERY lucrative contract. Infinite curve. Infinite money glitch.
