TNG s5e20 “Cost of Living”
Alternatively: Never tell the same lie twice.
Wise words from a different sage.

Best advice ever.

“Also, you never know who’s a full telepath, so you might as well not bother anyway.”
I was raised to be honest to a fault (by people who are now chronic liars) and during my childhood I read a quote without attribution; “Telling the truth is better than lying, less to keep track of.”
That has stayed with me my whole life, for better or worse.
The reasoning and ethics behind it are a little shaky, but the right lesson is still learned.
Right, it was meant in humor. I can’t remember the context of the quote apart from that.
I’m not sure they’re shaky at all. What’s the outcome of people internalizing the idea that pro-social behavior is beneficial versus some austere moral requirement? It seems to me that people act anti-socially in many cases because they see some benefit that outweighs the moral issue. If people instead were encouraged to see pro-social behavior as inherently personally beneficial, those who aren’t convinced by the moral argument might be more likely to adopt it anyway.
My favourite is:
The closer a lie is to the truth the better the lie. Sometimes the truth is the best lie of all.
