        I don’t have a precise bead on when woke entered my lexicon, but it wasn’t really a thing until it became a rhetorical cudgel for the far right.

          it’s not that difficult to figure out from first principles, being “asleep” is a pretty old way of saying someone is unaware of something, and “woke” is obviously like “i just woke up”, so presumably “being woke” is the opposite of “being asleep”.
