The former Sephardic chief rabbi in Israel, Yitzhak Yosef, attributed the change in the stance of US President Donald Trump towards Israel to what he described as “divine punishment” against the backdrop of the persecution of Haredi students and attempts to forcibly recruit them.
Yediot Ahronot newspaper quoted Yosef as saying that Trump turned against Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu because of the decrees and decisions issued against yeshiva students.
Yosef added that yeshiva students had been exempt from military service since the era of Israel’s first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, and were engaged in Torah studies.
