Blame Florida. The post Castro wave of Cubans still exert a lot of power. They’ll destroy any pol who tries to ease tensions. And since Florida is an important electoral state the embargo is enshrined.

In 2020, GOP flooded Miami area with “Biden as a communist lover will give Florida to the ghost of Castro” ads. FL was not competitive because Miami area was not as blue as 2000 era.

Because the Cubans that fled were the capitalists and landowners whose land Castro appropriated and nationalized. They didn’t like that the Batista gravy-train was coming to an end, and their way of life would no longer be acceptable in Cuba, so they fled “oppression.”

So when the GOP misuses “socialist” and “communist” to scare people, it really works on those people because they think the government is literally going to take their property away.

Many Cubans in Florida either fled Cuba following the Cuban revolution or are the children/grandchildren of those who did. Those that fled obviously disagreed with the Castro regime so vehemently they left their homelands, friends, and family behind. Very often they were the middle, upper-middle, or upper class of Cuba, so when the socialist revolution nationalized private property, disrupted private businesses, and seized private financial assets, the Cubans that fled were the ones that lost the most. Others fled due to political persecution and imprisonment, censorship, etc. Cuba, like anywhere else, wasn’t and isn’t idyllic.

Just like in the US, the petite bourgeoisie will unify with the Professional Managerial Class to stomp on the less advantaged, blocking any erstwhile progress from within.

They hated Castro because he wouldn’t allow them to continue living extravagant lifestyles next to people who were poor and starving.

America needs another round of McCarthy hearings, only this time against anyone suspected of wanting to destroy American democracy. Haul them before courts, Musk, Thiel, Yarvin, Flynn, Trump, Bannon, Vance, all those talking heads who took Russian money, and the spies who gave ot to them. They all need to be hauled before a court and tried very publicly - and sent to jail in order to fix the distrust of government.

Mate, every single politician who supports “hands off regulation” and other forms of the State (which is the thing that voters control by electing people to lead and manage it) not interfering in those things controlled by the other Power, Money, would have to be hauled before such courts.

The pro-Oligarchs (commonly known as Neoliberals) are just as much against voters controlling how Society gets managed (i.e. against Democracy) as the Fascists.

It’s just that Neoliberals want Money to be the Prime power, abover a State whose hands are tied but whose leaders are elected (thou often and as seen in the US, the only choices that voters have are a carefully preselect pool of candidates), whilst the Fascists want unelected leaders controlling the State as a Prime power, above even Money, which is indeed quite a different situation for those people with enough Money for it to amount to Power, but it’s not that much of a difference for the plebes like you and me who would are at the bottom of the pile and de facto powerless under both systems.

Ultimatelly “no voting” or “votes only control a secondary power which is not the top power of the land” are both anti-Democratic and the current problem of lack of Democracy (which I believe is the biggest problem in most of the West) predates the recent Trump & The Trumpettes’ version of anti-Democracy by at least 3 decades.

Do you understand that the McCarthy hearings were not a time to harken back to but rather something to feel shame over ?

And nothing happened to the rich and powerful because of those hearings.

those talking heads who took Russian money

The McCarthy hearings we need are for those who fail to understand Zionism as a hate group. https://lemmy.ca/post/32328505

Nationalizing/disposessing shareholders for those industries who fund disinformation on global warming and oligarchy protection. Zionist supporting media must be nationalized especially/as well.

There is a winning political platform that would delegitimize and remove citizenship to every Zionist, Israel oath taking, politician/candidate.

Whether GOP supported disinformation has Russian origins doesn’t make it not a GOP operation that is simply outsourced to Russia to protect the sources of the con. Instead of hurricane Helene being blamed on GOP supported climate terrorism, it is all (GOP targeted defunding of) FEMA’s fault.

The problem is we have more Jan 6th “restore democracy” people than we have anti-FPTP “establish democracy” people. Trump has made bad voting reform a major part of his platform.

You’re not wrong, but the political climate will need to improve tremendously before McCarthyesque hearings can be a force for good.

A segment of our society has a violent streak and an entirely different view of what they want democracy to look like, and they are well experienced at organizing for mob justice. Beating them at their own game while maintaining real objectivity will be difficult; not the being objective part, but actually getting the system to punish this behavior.
