  • I ran a drill rig for soil sampling for a few years. One day it was 100F outside and we had to drill inside a drycleaners. They had dryers and steam presses going , so it was a humid 130F inside. We used a remote drill rig which required running 100 lb hydraulic lines from the truck outside. These lines got so hot you couldn't touch them with a bare hand. So imagine trying to move these heavy as hell lines without them touching bare skin and while having to shift your hands around constantly to avoid burns.

That ties for worst with the day we drilled at a gas station in a farm field in the middle of nowhere where it was -20F not counting the wind chill. The thing about soil sampling for contaminants is you have to wash the drill between holes. At those temperatures everything froze instantly and the machinery kept locking up with ice. It took us 8 hours to do what would normally take 2. And then we got a flat tire driving back...

  • And don't take your foot off the accelerator. You need power to pull yourself through.

  • They make these things that are basically long zip ties with nubs on them that you can strap to your tires. They are supposed to give you traction in a pinch. A bit late for this storm, but it wouldn't be bad to have in your trunk for an emergency. I haven't tried them myself I admit, but it has to be better than nothing.

    • turn off traction control

In some cars to turn off the traction control and ABS, you have to push and hold the button on the dash (usually depicted with a wheel and two squiggly lines). You will know it is off if the ABS and/or TCS alert lights appear on the dashboard.

  • What are the odds that he tries to invade Iceland as well just because he can't admit that he got the name wrong?

  • We are a LONG way from AI being cheaper than an underpaid office drone or service worker. Maybe we could convince the AI companies to support unions and drive up wages so AI looks more affordable by comparison. Better working conditions and fewer people wasting their lives on jobs that can be automated.

  • Protest at his church. Protest at his damn dentist. Give them no peace. They deserve none.

  • If you are interested in breaking the two party system, it is literally the most important issue out there. IMO there is no way, outside of violent revolution, of breaking up the two party system besides this.

  • Voting is not the only tool we have to put pressure on politicians who actually believe in democracy. They will respond to public outcry. The problem is politicians who don't believe in democracy because all that moves them is money.

  • I don't know which examples you are thinking of, but I would bet that is after changes in the law or without an explicit constitutional procedure on voting.

As far as voting for the lesser evil, that is beyond naive. Every election is voting for the leaser evil. If you expect to find a candidate you agree with 100%, you will be waiting til the heat death of the universe.

  • Ranked choice voting/instant runoff voting.

  • That sounds exactly like what someone would say who had a vested interest in making people give up on voting.

  • The subpoena was happening either way. But the bonds are a gift to prevent prosecution. Or at least that's how I read it.

Edit: Looking at it another way, buying the bonds could be Trump buying the guys silence when he testifies.

  • I'm assuming he didn't so much buy the bonds, but was gifted them.

    1. Visible tattoos. Have to be off legal age to get a tattoo, right?

    2. Talk to them. Even if it's awkward, it's practice.
  • I was thinking Russian Roulette, but I guess your way is fine.

  • I'm sure sending out a list with none of the associated verification information wouldn't have any weaknesses to manipulation or falsification...

  • I really do hope they do what you say and shut down the government again over ICE. With luck they will only have to keep it shut down until the newly elected democrat majority house takes office in January.
