  • Zohran Mamdani is a great example. He beat the Dems on their own grounds. I have faith he can be a leader against the Republican administration precisely because he proved he has a plan and the ability to execute it in spite of resistance.

We need to get rid of "first past the post" election systems. That will allow candidates like Mamdani to be competitive in a larger variety. The way I see it, this will NEVER happen through Republicans and as the system exists now there are only two viable choices. I'm not saying it won't be an uphill battle, but at least there has been some progress in making elections more representative of a variety of political views under Democrats.

  • You don't think being able to win against an entrenched power structure in spite of legislative obstruction is at all relevant to defeating Republicans?

  • Big cotton and big pharma have a lot to do with it. Originally in the US though it was pretty much pure racism.

  • And you don't think the Republicans put their thumb on the scale every chance they get? The fight is not going to be fair. You have to be able to win in spite of that.

  • In short, racism.

Marijuana was largely banned because it was associated with Mexican immigrants and African Americans. It was claimed the drug led to violence, insanity, and race mixing.

Even today, black people are about four times as likely as white people to be arrested on marijuana-related charges even though they use the drug at similar rates to white people.

  • How so?

  • Nobody is going to "give" you a shot. The left has to take it. If they can't figure out how to do that, they don't have what it takes to lead the country.

  • If the left can't beat Democrats, how the hell do you think they will beat Republicans?

  • The reason is irrelevant to the point that current Democrats are the same as 1980s Republicans. That is just false.

  • Gonna need proof of that one.

  • Ah yes, 1980s Republicans were famous for their support of gay marriage and their compassionate take on the AIDS epidemic.

Do you people even think about these bogus claims before you repeat them?

  • You think these people are a lot more competent than I do.

  • There is no way to get a majority without including moderates. Never has been, never will be. (At least until we we get rid of FPTP voting which will only happen through Democrats).

  • Ideological purity tests are not something we can afford if we are going to try and take majority control and actually progress a sane agenda. We would lose this vote even if 100% of Dems vote against it.

  • Ah, yes. Hand the Republicans even more of a voting advantage. That will help.

  • 7 Democrats voted for the bill. 200 didn't.

  • Trump probably decided to drop out when he discovered the "W" didn't stand for White.

  • If it holds long enough to get me unstuck from a rut, then it would still be worth it to me
