Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s allies are publicly breaking with him over his handpicked police commissioner — and Hizzoner is livid that the socialist House candidate he went out on a limb to endorse is leading the charge.
City Hall staffers have been openly whining about alleged ally Darializa Avila Chevalier — whom Mamdani endorsed just a few months ago during the primaries — after she led a crusade to slam NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch after ICE agents shot an illegal migrant in the Bronx.
“They were pissed about what she did on social media and her public rhetoric on NYPD,” one source with knowledge said. “City Hall was like, ‘what the f–k are you doing!’”
The ICE shooting may mark the end of the socialist honeymoon for some Mamdani supporters, as some lefty pols and the national branch of his comrades in the Democratic Socialists of America push for Tisch’s ouster despite Hizzoner standing by his commissioner.
Another source said that folks in the admin griped that, “this was a direct undermining of Mamdani.”
I find it so funny that many online dems and center-fetishists cry about the left being intransigent and dogmatic, and when someone in the party or party-adjacent voices the slightest criticism they are all “undermining this” and “sabotaging that”.
They all demand the blind and ultimate loyalty and party discipline that they decry “authoritarian” states force people to have. If this was a lower-ranked official voicing criticism of the Mayor of Shanghai or Havana, they’d be all defending their right to free speech and saying how in bad country you can’t criticize leadership.
There’s even evidence that relentless criticism actually gets you results in American politics. The tea party, evangelical churches, and, more recently, Trump loyalists did nothing but hound more standard GOP politicians for years until their craziness became the party mainstream. Why wouldn’t anyone apply the same playbook?
The moralists don’t want to see the system change, they want stability as they already have their piece of the pie.
We may think they are not playing by their own rules but that is because they have a different game to play.
