I never understood the incredulity from everyone.
Starfleet pushed for this PR stunt, knowing the Enterprise wasn’t actually ready for a real shakedown cruise. This was supposed to be a proverbial sail around the harbor. They weren’t even going that far in the solar system.
But you know how space is, enterprise has to be the closest/only ship in the sector. Despite Earth being the base of operations for the federation and definitely one of dozens of ships that should be loitering around the sector at any given time, let alone the ships in space dock that are fully operational and while maybe a little light on crew due to being in space dock can be ready in 5 minutes with a sizeable chunk of experienced crew…
Captain Cam gets an undeserved bad reputation from being handed a chainsaw and asked to perform surgery on a grape.
I’ve made this same argument multiple times. It’s not that he’s inexperienced. He has an incomplete, understaffed ship with celebrities and civilian press on board. He wasn’t skiddish because he didn’t know what to do, but because he knew he didn’t have the tools to properly do it.
He was in an unwinnable situation. If he had said they weren’t prepared for a rescue mission and returned to space dock, the press would have put “Captain Runaway” all over the place. He never would have lived it down.
So instead he never gets to live down being the captain “responsible” for kirk’s death, and has to endure smear campaigns anyway.
