Iowa farming has been difficult for years because of rising costs

Well, then you need to cut costs, be more competitive. Next.

Tariffs increased costs of fertilizer, pesticides and farm equipment,

sigh Fly-swatters, wheelbarrows and some elbow grease. You got free fertilizer coming out your ass. It’s called input substitution, sweety.

    and caused market instability

This is not a thing. Markets are perfect.

The related trade wars especially hurt U.S. relations with Canada, which buys about 30% of Iowa’s exports.

Hire PR firm if you want to increase your market share. Nothing is free, kiddo.

The war in Iran increased the cost of diesel by nearly 80% in Iowa,

Again, wheelbarrows, shovels etc. This is what built America. Why are farmers so afraid of doing honest work?

farmers to bleed money, consider taking loans just to survive and limit machine use to critical levels.

Sorry but if you can’t afford the upkeep you can’t afford it. If you can’t afford a loan why did you take it? You need to check your finances.

This is why we need to teach financial literacy in schools.

“This is what America would look like under communism” and it’s just a picture of an American grocery store suffering severe supply shortages that are directly attributable to tariffs, trade wars, market volatility caused by the aforementioned trade wars and tariffs, as well as fuel costs

Is it beyond Trump to do an economic shock to farmers deliberately to force them to sell to bigger landowners who are his pals?

    • frankly, this has been the overall strategy for farmland since the colonial era.

support programs only began and receive additional resources to slow this process when it’s happening too quickly for political machines to accomodate and the rapid dislocation threatens their stability. news of farm bankruptcies and collapse of farm communities only really bubbles up to the national level when there are too many at once, but the process has been consisten for over a century.

when it happens slower, when suicides and diseases of despair aren’t clustering and the transition of ownership is orderly, it’s termed “improved farm efficiency” and celebrated as innovation and progress.

        • i would totally be in favor of a support system that steadily buys them all out and converts agricultural land into a communal ownership model by paying the investment and labor costs associated with habitat restoration/protection, conservation practices, or whatever priorities are identified by the community affected etc.

right now it like, mostly helps petite bourgeois limp along until they give up and cash out to massive landowners or like, more successful, cash rich bourgeois who want to reconfigure themselves into some american settler-estate lordlings. like some quiverful VC/fintech douche who can plunk down 7 million to buy some huge farm for his tradwife to populate with overseers. those people cannot be allowed to seize control of ag land & watersheds, especially as we somersault into climate destabilization.

That’s the great thing about America. The system at one point was very intentionally put in place to let the ruling class fail upwards. Even if it’s not done on purpose there are a bunch of assholes who figure out how to capitalize on it. If it bleeds its news? Sure. But if it bleeds its also money to be made.

Just plant more corn and soy. Surely you can’t go wrong by just planting more corn and soy. Leverage that economy of scale with more cheap, high-input, low-margin commodity crops. You’ll never regret growing more corn and soy.

Weird. If only someone could have seen this coming, and told you how you could have avoided it.
