Rail freight from China to Iran has increased tenfold since the US imposed a maritime blockade on Iranian ports, as Tehran brings three rail corridors online and expands capacity at its northern ports, Iranian parliament member Meisam Zohourian revealed on 29 September.

Zohourian said the same land and rail network could allow Iran to ship between 300,000 and 400,000 barrels of oil abroad per day (bpd), bypassing sea routes entirely.

He said that launching overland crude exports by rail and truck could establish alternative non-maritime trade corridors and eventually lead to building pipelines if they prove financially practical, he added.

Zohourian acknowledged that rail cannot carry the full load once handled by sea, but said it offers Tehran a dependable fallback in times of crisis and strengthens the resilience of Iran’s foreign commerce in ordinary times as well.
