Philippines Experience Wave of Protests Against U.S. and Israeli Attacks on Iran - Telesur English
Groups from various sectors gathered at the United States embassy in Manila to condemn the ongoing bombings and wars of aggression waged by the US and Israel in different parts of the world. Calling for peace and justice, the demonstrators demanded an end to the military intervention that destroys communities, causes the deaths of children, violates international human rights, and provokes an economic crisis that is also felt in the Philippines.
Protesters attempted to surround the U.S. embassy, but were repressed by police. Mobilizations continue.
A series of demonstrations have been taking place in the streets of different cities in the Philippines since the beginning of March, in protest against the military attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Popular organizations, feminist movements, unions, and students denounce the military escalation in the Middle East and warn of its economic and political impacts on countries of the Global South.
The mobilizations began a few days after the bombings and quickly spread to different regions of the archipelago. On March 2nd, activists held the first public event in Iloilo, in the center of the country, convened by organizations linked to the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) coalition, one of the main progressive fronts in the Philippines. During the protest, participants denounced what they called “military aggression” against Iran and criticized Washington’s role in escalating the conflict.
The following day, March 3rd, the mobilizations reached the capital. Demonstrators gathered in central Manila and marched towards the United States Embassy, a location traditionally chosen for protests against U.S. foreign policy. Police blocked the march before the demonstrators reached the diplomatic building, creating moments of tension.
Subsequently, new demonstrations were called by different social organizations, broadening the reach of the mobilizations. Among the most active groups is the Gabriela Women’s Party, a feminist coalition with a strong presence in the country’s social struggles.
This Sunday (March, 8), International Women’s Day, protesters in Manila transformed the traditional march into a protest against the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, connecting the fight for women’s rights with the denunciation of foreign policy that has a global impact. The mobilization attracted thousands of participants to the historic Liwasang Bonifacio, dressed in purple and carrying signs that also denounced corruption, social justice, and the cost of living in the country.
The march proceeded along Kalaw Avenue towards the U.S. embassy, but was prevented from advancing by a strong security line established by the police. According to reports to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the protesters faced an intense police presence and attempts to block the route, which hindered their approach to the embassy and partially limited the group’s movement.
Despite failing to surround the embassy, the movements vowed to continue their mobilizations, intensifying their voices in future protests, a massive demonstration scheduled for March 27th, which is being monitored by authorities as a possible new day of protests.
Protests call for an end to the U.S. military presence in the Philippines
The March protests in the Philippines were not limited to criticism of U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran. Protesters also questioned the U.S. military presence in the country, especially through the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), which allows U.S. forces to use Philippine bases on a rotational basis.
Since the signing of the EDCA in 2014, several strategic installations have temporarily received U.S. training, equipment, and personnel. Among the most cited locations are Basa Air Base in Pampanga, Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija, and Antonio Bautista Air Base in Palawan. Recently, the number of rotational access points was expanded to nine, including regions near important shipping lanes in the South China Sea.
For the protesters, the U.S. presence puts the country at risk of being involved in external conflicts and compromises national sovereignty. In the street demonstrations, they demanded greater control over military decisions and denounced what they consider to be the negative effects of strategic alliances on the security and daily lives of the population.

We’re Committed to Peace, but We’ll Not Hesitate to Defend Our Nation: Pezeshkian - Telesur English
Meawhile, Trump asks the Persian nation for ‘unconditional surrender’. On Friday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed that his country is prepared to defend its sovereignty amid the war launched by Israel and the United States on Feb. 28.
“Let’s be clear: we are committed to lasting peace in the region yet we have no hesitation in defending our nation’s dignity and sovereignty. Mediation should address those who underestimated the Iranian people and ignited this conflict,” he wrote on the social media platform X. During the first week of the war, U.S.-Israeli bombardments against the Persian nation have continued without pause. The Iran Veterans and Martyrs Foundation reported that at least 1,230 people have died in the country as a result of the attacks. The Iranian Health Ministry confirmed that 6,180 people have been injured so far.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his lack of interest in achieving a peaceful solution to the conflict with the Persian nation.
“There will be no deal with Iran, except an UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER! After that, and after the election of a GREAT AND ACCEPTABLE leader, we, together with many of our wonderful and brave allies and partners, will work tirelessly to rescue Iran from the brink of destruction, making it economically bigger, better and stronger than ever,” he posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday.
In the initial attacks on Feb. 28, the U.S.-Israeli operation killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with part of the country’s military leadership and hundreds of civilians.
Tehran has responded with attacks against Israel and several U.S. military bases across the Middle East, including those located in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. At least six U.S. service members have died since the conflict began.
The U.S.-Israeli war on Iran has generated strong criticism not only among opponents of the Trump administration but also among MAGA activists.
The critical voices highlight what they describe as lies and false promises from Trump, who had pledged to focus on domestic U.S. issues and avoid starting wars abroad.
In one of several attempts to justify his military actions, Trump has argued that the attacks against Iran aim to protect Americans and eliminate Iranian military capabilities, destroy its navy and dismantle its nuclear program.
Trump and U.S. War Secretary Pete Hegseth are scheduled to meet Friday at the White House with chief executives of defense companies.
Bogotá, March 9 (Prensa Latina) The victory achieved by the Historical Pact in the Colombian Senate elections can be described today as overwhelming, and proof of this is that it obtained four million 397 thousand votes, about two million more compared to 2022.
With 22.75 percent of the total, that bloc would guarantee about 25 seats in the Upper House and would surpass the 17 that the Democratic Center party would obtain, the collective of former president Álvaro Uribe (2018-2022) that came in second place with three million 16 thousand votes (15.6 percent).
If these figures are confirmed by the Attorney General's Office, the first of these political associations would increase by five, and the second by four, the number of seats they currently hold in the Senate.
The success of the Pact was celebrated almost immediately by the presidential candidate for that group, Iván Cepeda.
“Today our second half begins, with a strong and committed bloc we will begin a new stage of transformations,” he stated once the numbers were known.
According to him, that force represents "the government of agrarian reform, of labor reform, of pension reform (...), which dignifies the people who are in our hearts."
The community itself highlighted the event on its social media.
“Today we are the largest political force in the country. Thank you for believing, for voting, and for walking alongside this project of the people and for the people. This is just the beginning. With you, we will achieve more dignity, more opportunities, and more progress,” he said.
In these elections, more than 20,796,000 Colombians voted, 50.4 percent of the electorate, but only slightly more than 19,327,000 ballots were valid.
As for the House of Representatives, the Democratic Center, the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party, the Party of the U, and the Historical Pact led the way.
In these elections, with more than 98 percent of the polling stations reported, 50 percent of the electoral census participated, totaling 20 million 608 thousand.
The valid votes were 18 million 851 thousand, for a total of 95 percent.
Citizens went to the polls yesterday in Colombia to elect 102 senators, 100 of whom would be chosen in a national constituency through lists that compete throughout the country, while two special seats are reserved for indigenous communities.
The 182 representatives to the House were also elected by popular vote. These seats include territorial constituencies (departments), special constituencies (indigenous people, Afro-descendants, communities abroad), and the 16 peace seats.
Three inter-party consultations were also held the previous day.
The winners were Paloma Valencia for the Great Consultation for Colombia coalition, Roy Barreras for the Front for Life and Claudia López for the Consultation of Solutions.
Each of the winners will now go to the first round of the presidential elections to be held on May 31.
Venezuela's interim president highlights the socialist commune model - Prensa Latina
Caracas, March 7 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, highlighted today the model of the El Maizal Socialist Commune, in the state of Lara, which she visited yesterday on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of its founding by Commander Hugo Chávez.
On her Telegram social media account, the leader praised the date as a day of “collective construction and struggle for social justice.”
He considered them a role model, "forged with their own hands on lands recovered by Commander Chávez as an act of transformation."
“We have seen their large production that transcends borders and I approved resources to boost the industrialization of their productive projects,” he announced.
Rodríguez indicated that with this spirit they will go to tomorrow's Popular Consultation, in which they will exercise sovereignty in five thousand 336 Communal Circuits, and called for the defense of peace and the future of Venezuela.
In the video accompanying the message, he emphasized that the El Maizal Commune is not only a productive entity, and like those in the rest of the country, "it has a profound political message for our nation, which should be equality and access to opportunities."
The acting governor congratulated the community members of that entity for the 17 years of building "a model of inclusion, social justice and collective construction that the Communes have."
He valued Chávez's legacy in that regard and the contribution of President Nicolás Maduro in El Maizal and in the National Communal Movement.
Rodríguez said he wanted the “Made in Commune” project to carry the message to the people of the United States of what “a people in resistance and dignified is, capable of doing, when the course of freedom, independence and happiness has been charted.”
In her speech yesterday, the dignitary recalled that tomorrow, March 8, the Venezuelan people will exercise their sovereignty with the celebration of the first Popular Consultation of the year, in which more than 36 development projects chosen in popular assemblies will be voted on.
He called for participation in these unusual elections and for what is a necessity in public services, a product of the criminal blockade against the homeland, the aspiration in productive projects and in economic transformation, "to become a selection through the vote."
The communal horizon is in our hands and "we will never surrender it, we will defend it forever," he assured.
Nicaragua strengthens diplomatic ties with Myanmar and Venezuela - Prensa Latina
Managua, March 5 (Prensa Latina) Co-President Rosario Murillo announced today that new Nicaraguan ambassadors presented their credentials to the authorities of Myanmar and Venezuela, thus strengthening diplomatic ties with those nations.
During her daily address on citizen power media, the president detailed that the Nicaraguan ambassador Segundo Martín Calero Escorcia presented his credentials to the people and Government of the Union of Myanmar.
“We salute that people and their government, establishing this supportive, complementary and diplomatic brotherhood through the bonds of diplomacy that should move the world,” Murillo said.
The co-chair also highlighted that Nicaragua presented copies of its credentials in Venezuela through Ambassador Isidro Antonio Rivera Guadamuz to Foreign Minister Yván Gil.
He stressed that the diplomat represents the Nicaraguan people and government before the “heroic Venezuelan people, the people of (Simón) Bolívar, of (Hugo) Chávez, of Nicolás (Maduro) and of Delcy (Rodríguez)”.
“There is our people with our diplomatic representation and above all our unshakeable bonds of brotherhood and strength, the strength of a heroic people, the strength of the brave,” he affirmed.
Shield of the Americas Summit: Trump from hate to love towards Venezuela - Prensa Latina
Washington, March 7 (Prensa Latina) At his Shield of the Americas Summit, US President Donald Trump boasted today of the progress with Venezuela after the January 3 attack in which the country's president, Nicolás Maduro, was kidnapped.
For several days, Trump has expressed opinions about the relationship with that country in this new stage and before the limited group of leaders from the region who attended the summit held at his golf club in Miami, he confirmed that he officially recognized the Government of Delcy Rodríguez and that they will restore diplomatic ties.
“I am pleased to say that this week we have formally recognized the Venezuelan government. In fact, we have legally recognized it,” Trump stated triumphantly.
According to Trump, he is achieving a "historic transformation" in Venezuela, a country with which he broke off relations in 2019 during his first term (2017-2021).
Furthermore, he linked the efforts in Venezuela to the maximum pressure against Cuba, where the United States cut off the supply of Venezuelan crude.
The ruler did not hide that with his revived Monroe Doctrine (America for the Americans), now dubbed the Donroe Doctrine (which would justify interventions in the name of national security) "we will not allow hostile foreign influence to establish itself in this hemisphere."
Aside from the oil that the United States already controls, Trump highlighted that the Treasury Department yesterday issued a license authorizing certain activities of US companies linked to the exploitation and commercialization of Venezuelan gold, a sector that until now was subject to the countless sanctions imposed by the White House against that nation.
On Thursday, March 5—the 13th anniversary of the death of Bolivarian leader Hugo Chávez—the United States and Venezuela announced the restoration of their diplomatic relations as part of the dialogue initiated between authorities of the two countries.
A statement from the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Caracas's willingness to "move forward into a new stage of constructive dialogue, based on mutual respect, the sovereign equality of States and cooperation between our peoples."
The presidents of Argentina, Javier Milei; Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz; Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves; Ecuador, Daniel Noboa; Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader; El Salvador, Nayib Bukele; Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali; and Honduras, Nasry “Tito” Asfura, were invited to the Shield of the Americas meeting.
Also present were José Raúl Mulino from Panama; Santiago Peña from Paraguay; Kamla Persad-Bissesar from Trinidad and Tobago; and the president-elect of Chile, José Antonio Kast.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the participants in the meeting “are the leaders of these countries who have formed a historic coalition to collaborate and tackle criminal drug cartels and mass immigration, not only to the United States, but throughout the continent.”
For its part, the State Department described the meeting as a moment in which “the United States will welcome our best like-minded allies in our hemisphere to promote freedom, security and prosperity in our region.”
Venezuelans abroad interested in taking advantage of the Amnesty Law - Prensa Latina
Caracas, March 5 (Prensa Latina) The president of the National Assembly (parliament) of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, announced today that Venezuelan nationals residing abroad have expressed interest in returning to the country to take advantage of the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence.
Speaking to the press at the Federal Legislative Palace, where the regular session was about to begin this Thursday, the parliamentarian stated that the requests come from Venezuelan politicians or citizens living abroad.
“We have received requests for their cases to be addressed through the Amnesty Law,” he stressed, without mentioning names or figures, because the regulations do not refer to people but to “articles that establish the facts,” he added.
He revealed that among those sought are people who had "a prominent role in extremely dangerous events, but we do not want to personalize the situation" regarding the development of the legal instrument, he stated.
Rodríguez cited the second paragraph of article seven of the legal instrument, sanctioned and promulgated on February 19, which recognizes this figure.
He reaffirmed that for those who “believe their cases can be addressed in the context of the Amnesty Law”, they ordered the Monitoring Commission of that law to begin addressing “any case that comes from abroad”.
The congressman emphasized that the commission's actions are completely open to moving forward.
Referring to those who benefited from the Amnesty Law, the parliamentarian announced that a total of 7,365 people deprived of their liberty or subjected to some type of alternative measures received full release.
He stated that as part of the process, the Monitoring Commission addressed other cases not covered by the facts stipulated in the regulation, but were addressed to provide a recommendation and advise the bodies of the judicial system or the Executive Branch.
When questioned about the reform to the Mining Law, announced the previous day by acting president Delcy Rodríguez, the head of the Legislative Branch reported that they are diligently reviewing its text and "we are already reaching an agreement" to submit it for discussion as soon as possible.
MADURO UPDATE: Maduro sends a message of faith and hope to the people of Venezuela - Prensa Latina
Caracas, March 8 (Prensa Latina) Constitutional President Nicolás Maduro sent a message of faith and hope to the people of Venezuela today on International Women's Day.
In a statement released through social media by his son and National Assembly (parliament) deputy Nicolás Maduro Guerra, the dignitary, speaking from the Brooklyn, New York detention center, said that today “Bolívar invites us to vote and build from the commune a government where equality and freedom reign.”
May this day, “blessed by God, be a sign of our firm faith and our daily struggle,” he said, referring to the first Popular Consultation of 2026 in which this Sunday the organized communities vote for their development projects in five thousand 336 Community Circuits.
Maduro asserted that “united in Christ, Bolívar and Chávez, we will make Venezuela a home of love, justice and People's Power.”
He stated that on this March 8th, International Women's Day, "we come before God and Bolívar, together with the beloved Communes of Venezuela," to ask the Lord to accompany us in this day of building Popular Power, made by the brave hands of our women and men of the people.
Let us raise up this slogan that guides us as a central idea: “Faith that moves mountains and action that builds the new, in Christ and Bolívar,” he asserted.
The head of state pointed out that Jesus taught us: “If you have faith and do not doubt, you can even say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done” (Matthew 21:21). “Give us that sincere and popular faith, to move the mountains of difficulties that sometimes hold us back, and turn them into a clear path for our nation,” he added.
And Bolívar, in Angostura, showed us the path of action: he called for a popular, just and moral government that would end oppression and bring peace, he stressed.
On January 3, the United States, after months of constant threats, attacked four territories of Venezuela with military forces, including Caracas, and proceeded to kidnap Maduro and his wife and deputy Cilia Flores, who have been illegally detained for 65 days.
Several American analysts have described Mojtaba was a supporter of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, in opposition to his father's fatwa against them. According to The Washington Institute For Near East Policy, Mojtaba "may decide that Iran must move quickly to obtain nuclear weapons in order to forestall future U.S. and Israeli attacks. Whether this approach stablizes the regime or accelerates fragmentation, it will shape the next phase of the conflict."

Cuban Electricity System Reconnected After Failure, Amid U.S. Blockade - Telesur English
Cuba’s National Electrical System was fully reconnected, restoring a high percentage of power across the island after a massive outage, underscoring the fragility of the country’s energy infrastructure amid tightening U.S. sanctions. Cuba’s national electricity system fully reconnected on March 5, at 05:01 A.M. local time, following a widespread outage triggered by a fault at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant on March 4.
The Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines confirmed the interlinkage of the National Electroenergetic System (SEN, in Spanish), successfully restoring power across the island, from its westernmost to southeasternmost points. This crucial reconnection came after a significant service interruption that had affected a vast segment of the country.
Authorities announced that the progressive incorporation of various generation units throughout the territory is ongoing to stabilize the supply.
Lazaro Guerra, Director of Electricity at Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, reported that by 07:00 AM on March 5, the country had 590 megawatts (MW) of electricity served. Guerra specified that several additional generation units are expected to become operational during the day, including two from the Santa Cruz del Norte plant, unit three of the Cienfuegos thermoelectric plant in the south-central region, and unit six of Nuevitas, located in Camagüey province on Cuba’s north coast.
While the malfunction at the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant in Matanzas was the direct cause of the system’s collapse on Wednesday, the fundamental underlying issue, according to Guerra, is the inherent weakness of the National Electroenergetic System. This vulnerability stems primarily from the persistent unavailability of fuel required for distributed generation.
The initial service interruption occurred just after noon on March 4, when an unexpected shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras plant, caused by a boiler failure, led to a disconnection affecting a vast area from Camagüey in the central-eastern region to Pinar del Rio province. Emergency protocols were immediately activated to address the contingency and commence power restoration efforts in the impacted areas.
Further complicating the energy landscape, the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant began an estimated four-day maintenance period on the morning of March 5.
Ruben Campos Olmo, Director General of the plant, explained that this technical intervention is critically aimed at reducing water consumption in the high-temperature reheater. This component, he detailed, has shown significant weakening due to the prolonged and excessive operational demands placed upon it. The need for such repairs highlights the severe strain on Cuba´s energy infrastructure and the challenges in maintaining a consistent electricity supply.
According to the official information, 218 distribution circuits of the Cuban capital has electricity service at 1:00 P.M. local time, which represents 76.49% of the city. Meanwhile, the gradual synchronization of the loads of photovoltaic solar parks is ongoing in the provinces.
Cuba’s energy crisis has sharply intensified in recent weeks, a situation directly attributed to the financial and commercial restrictions imposed by the United States Government.
As an example of the escalating instability, Havana, the island’s capital, experienced a power outage exceeding 19 hours on March 3, further underscoring the precarious situation.
This scenario is a direct consequence of the tightened sanctions targeting Cuba’s petroleum sector. Specifically, a recent Executive Order, declared as an alleged “emergency” measure and signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has significantly exacerbated the situation. This measure mandates the imposition of tariffs on nations that supply fuel to the island, effectively creating substantial obstacles for the import of essential energy resources.
The international community has largely condemned this interference policy. Various leaders and international organizations have rejected it, characterizing it as a strategy of economic suffocation that infringes upon Cuba’s sovereign right to maintain basic services for its population.
This ongoing U.S. policy severely compromises Cuba’s ability to ensure a stable power supply and maintain its national energy security, directly impacting the daily lives of millions of Cubans.
Colombia Warns of Possible Fraud Ahead of Parliamentary Elections - Telesur English
Colombian authorities warned of possible electoral fraud ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary vote following arrests and a cash seizure in La Guajira.
Government raises concerns over vote-buying networks and private management of preliminary vote counts. The Colombian government warned of potential electoral fraud ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday, citing recent incidents that authorities say point to possible vote-buying operations and broader risks to the integrity of the process.
Officials also questioned the current arrangement under which the preliminary vote count is handled by a private company. Government authorities suggested that this responsibility should be managed by the state to guarantee full transparency in the reporting of electoral results.
To strengthen oversight and deter electoral crimes, the Presidency announced a reward of up to 130,000 dollars for information leading to the capture of individuals involved in offenses related to the elections. The measure seeks to dismantle networks dedicated to buying and selling votes, a practice the president described as a “purchase of consciences” linked to traditional political structures.
Another 118 million pesos, intended for vote buying, have been seized
The warning follows the recent arrest of two individuals in the department of La Guajira who were traveling in an armored vehicle carrying more than 38,000 dollars in cash along with political propaganda from the Conservative Party. Authorities reported that envelopes labeled with the names of municipalities in the region were also found inside the vehicle, reinforcing suspicions that the money was intended to influence voters in favor of congressional candidates.
Security concerns intensified after officials confirmed that one of the detainees worked as a bodyguard for the secretary of the Chamber of Representatives, connecting the case to personnel linked to the legislative branch.
The government called on citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious movement of money or external pressure that could affect the electoral process through the use of funds of questionable origin.
Meanwhile, the Historic Pact coalition stated that it has repeatedly denounced evidence of attempts to manipulate the electoral system. The coalition extended the deadline for registering electoral witnesses until March 5. These observers will monitor vote counting at polling stations to ensure that each ballot is processed without technical irregularities.
Civil society warns of democratic risks due to Petro’s speech on electoral fraud President Gustavo Petro also recalled that previous electoral processes in the country have faced serious irregularities that affected the legitimacy of parliamentary representation in several regions. Authorities said that the reinforcement of security forces and broader monitoring at polling stations aim to ensure that the elections take place under conditions of fairness and transparency.
Venezuela and the United States Resume Diplomatic Relations - Telesur English
Venezuela and the United States agreed to restore diplomatic and consular relations after years of tension, a decision that seeks to strengthen regional stability and promote political dialogue based on on mutual respect, sovereign and cooperation. The Governments of Venezuela and the United States have decided to re-establish diplomatic and consular relations on March 5, after a “diplomatic dialogue established with the authorities of the United States of America”, according to the Venezuelan official communiqué.
This crucial understanding was formalized this Thursday, marking a significant shift influenced by key energy factors. In this sense, Venezuelan authorities expressed its confidence that this process will contribute to strengthening understanding and opening opportunities for a positive and mutually beneficial relationship, reaffirming the willingness to move forward into a new phase of constructive dialogue based on mutual respect, sovereign and cooperation between both countries.
This step “accompanies the fertile dialogue that Venezuelans hold among themselves, aimed at strengthening coexistence, peace, and national understanding”, Venezuelan authorities affirmed.
The formal reestablishment of embassies and consulates represents an essential tool for serving citizens and resuming normal consular services, making possible to process visas, documentation, and other administrative procedures.
The coming months will be marked by the definition of diplomatic teams and the coordination of bilateral agendas, focused on trade, migration, and international cooperation issues, in shared vision about the importance of an institutional framework that benefits both the Venezuelan and U.S. people.
The re-establishment of diplomatic ties occurred in the context of the visit of U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to Caracas, which facilitated the signing of crucial energy sector agreements.
Just three weeks prior, U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher Wright also visited the country, during which both nations agreed to advance in establishing projects in the areas of oil, gas, and electrical energy, emphasizing the energy-driven impetus for this diplomatic thaw.
The resume move is aligned with a vision of harnessing national wealth for comprehensive development, strengthening both economic prosperity and national security through responsible and strategic international alliances.
This diplomatic rapprochement comes after the U.S. imperialist attack against Venezuela on last January, 3, which resulted with the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and the First Combatant Cilia Flores and their subsequently illegal transferred to a New York’s prison.
In this sense, the formal re-establishment of embassies and consulates is therefore not merely a functional step but also a symbolic act towards fulfilling a historical vision of peaceful coexistence, providing a direct channel for addressing various issues and serving citizens effectively.
Idk if anyone posted about this, but while the US and Israel were getting beaten by Iran and the resistance. Trump was larping and trying to create a new OAS (something the US created to fuck with Cuba), a organization called Shield of the Americas.
This is their logo:
As I posted earlier, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, and Mexico (the social democratic left in Latin America) boycotted it, while Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, and Nicaragua were not invited. But there are some surprises: Peru (under the leftist provisional government), Suriname (under the socdem goverment) and Guatemala also boycotted it.
The countries that actually attended were the usual bootlickers: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Guyana, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, and Honduras.
Anyway, I was going to say that the US is more like Mr. Satan. But even though Mr. Satan was a fraud and an idiot, he had a heart of gold.
What do you mean? He defeated Cell, don't diss the Champ like that.
Mohammad Reza wanted to go back to Mexico, saying he had pleasant memories of Cuernavaca, but was refused. Mexico was a candidate to be a rotating member of the UN Security Council, but needed the vote of Cuba to be admitted, and the Cuban leader Fidel Castro told President José López Portillo that Cuba's vote was conditional on Mexico not accepting the Shah again.
He left the United States on 15 December 1979 and lived for a short time in the Isla Contadora in Panama. This caused riots by Panamanians who objected to the Shah being in their country. General Omar Torrijos, the dictator of Panama, kept Mohammad Reza Shah as a virtual prisoner at the Paitilla Medical Center, a hospital condemned by the former Shah's US doctors as "an inadequate and poorly staffed hospital", and in order to hasten his death allowed only Panamanian doctors to treat his cancer.
General Torrijos, a populist left-winger, had only taken in Mohammad Reza under heavy US pressure, and he made no secret of his dislike of Mohammad Reza, whom he called after meeting him "the saddest man he had ever met". When he first met Mohammad Reza, Torrijos taunted him by telling him "it must be hard to fall off the Peacock Throne into Contadora" and called him a chupon, a Spanish slang term for "someone who is finished".
Torrijos added to Mohammad Reza's misery by making his chief bodyguard a militantly Marxist sociology professor who spent much time lecturing Mohammad Reza on how he deserved his fate because he had been a tool of the "American imperialism" that was ostensibly oppressing the Third World, and charged Mohammad Reza a monthly rent of US$21,000, making him pay for all his food and the wages of the 200 National Guardsmen assigned as his bodyguards.
President Carter did not wish to admit Mohammad Reza to the US but came under pressure from Henry Kissinger, who phoned Carter to say he would not endorse the SALT II treaty that Carter had just signed with the Soviet Union unless the former Shah was allowed into the United States, reportedly prompting Carter more than once to hang up his phone in rage in the Oval Office and shout "Fuck the Shah!".
On 22 October 1979, President Jimmy Carter reluctantly allowed the Shah into the United States to undergo surgical treatment at the Weill Cornell Medical Center. While there, Mohammad Reza used the name of "David D. Newsom," Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs at that time, as his temporary code name, without Newsom's knowledge. Mohammad Reza's time in New York was highly uncomfortable; he was under a heavy security detail as every day, Iranian students studying in the US gathered outside his hospital to shout "Death to the Shah!", a chorus that Mohammad Reza heard.
