  • Cuban Electricity System Reconnected After Failure, Amid U.S. Blockade - Telesur English

Cuba’s National Electrical System was fully reconnected, restoring a high percentage of power across the island after a massive outage, underscoring the fragility of the country’s energy infrastructure amid tightening U.S. sanctions. Cuba’s national electricity system fully reconnected on March 5, at 05:01 A.M. local time, following a widespread outage triggered by a fault at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant on March 4.

The Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines confirmed the interlinkage of the National Electroenergetic System (SEN, in Spanish), successfully restoring power across the island, from its westernmost to southeasternmost points. This crucial reconnection came after a significant service interruption that had affected a vast segment of the country.

Authorities announced that the progressive incorporation of various generation units throughout the territory is ongoing to stabilize the supply.

Lazaro Guerra, Director of Electricity at Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, reported that by 07:00 AM on March 5, the country had 590 megawatts (MW) of electricity served. Guerra specified that several additional generation units are expected to become operational during the day, including two from the Santa Cruz del Norte plant, unit three of the Cienfuegos thermoelectric plant in the south-central region, and unit six of Nuevitas, located in Camagüey province on Cuba’s north coast.

While the malfunction at the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant in Matanzas was the direct cause of the system’s collapse on Wednesday, the fundamental underlying issue, according to Guerra, is the inherent weakness of the National Electroenergetic System. This vulnerability stems primarily from the persistent unavailability of fuel required for distributed generation.

The initial service interruption occurred just after noon on March 4, when an unexpected shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras plant, caused by a boiler failure, led to a disconnection affecting a vast area from Camagüey in the central-eastern region to Pinar del Rio province. Emergency protocols were immediately activated to address the contingency and commence power restoration efforts in the impacted areas.

Further complicating the energy landscape, the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant began an estimated four-day maintenance period on the morning of March 5.

Ruben Campos Olmo, Director General of the plant, explained that this technical intervention is critically aimed at reducing water consumption in the high-temperature reheater. This component, he detailed, has shown significant weakening due to the prolonged and excessive operational demands placed upon it. The need for such repairs highlights the severe strain on Cuba´s energy infrastructure and the challenges in maintaining a consistent electricity supply.

According to the official information, 218 distribution circuits of the Cuban capital has electricity service at 1:00 P.M. local time, which represents 76.49% of the city. Meanwhile, the gradual synchronization of the loads of photovoltaic solar parks is ongoing in the provinces.

Cuba’s energy crisis has sharply intensified in recent weeks, a situation directly attributed to the financial and commercial restrictions imposed by the United States Government.

As an example of the escalating instability, Havana, the island’s capital, experienced a power outage exceeding 19 hours on March 3, further underscoring the precarious situation.

This scenario is a direct consequence of the tightened sanctions targeting Cuba’s petroleum sector. Specifically, a recent Executive Order, declared as an alleged “emergency” measure and signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has significantly exacerbated the situation. This measure mandates the imposition of tariffs on nations that supply fuel to the island, effectively creating substantial obstacles for the import of essential energy resources.

The international community has largely condemned this interference policy. Various leaders and international organizations have rejected it, characterizing it as a strategy of economic suffocation that infringes upon Cuba’s sovereign right to maintain basic services for its population.

This ongoing U.S. policy severely compromises Cuba’s ability to ensure a stable power supply and maintain its national energy security, directly impacting the daily lives of millions of Cubans.

  • Colombia Warns of Possible Fraud Ahead of Parliamentary Elections - Telesur English

Colombian authorities warned of possible electoral fraud ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary vote following arrests and a cash seizure in La Guajira.

Government raises concerns over vote-buying networks and private management of preliminary vote counts. The Colombian government warned of potential electoral fraud ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday, citing recent incidents that authorities say point to possible vote-buying operations and broader risks to the integrity of the process.

Officials also questioned the current arrangement under which the preliminary vote count is handled by a private company. Government authorities suggested that this responsibility should be managed by the state to guarantee full transparency in the reporting of electoral results.

To strengthen oversight and deter electoral crimes, the Presidency announced a reward of up to 130,000 dollars for information leading to the capture of individuals involved in offenses related to the elections. The measure seeks to dismantle networks dedicated to buying and selling votes, a practice the president described as a “purchase of consciences” linked to traditional political structures.

Another 118 million pesos, intended for vote buying, have been seized

The warning follows the recent arrest of two individuals in the department of La Guajira who were traveling in an armored vehicle carrying more than 38,000 dollars in cash along with political propaganda from the Conservative Party. Authorities reported that envelopes labeled with the names of municipalities in the region were also found inside the vehicle, reinforcing suspicions that the money was intended to influence voters in favor of congressional candidates.

Security concerns intensified after officials confirmed that one of the detainees worked as a bodyguard for the secretary of the Chamber of Representatives, connecting the case to personnel linked to the legislative branch.

The government called on citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious movement of money or external pressure that could affect the electoral process through the use of funds of questionable origin.

Meanwhile, the Historic Pact coalition stated that it has repeatedly denounced evidence of attempts to manipulate the electoral system. The coalition extended the deadline for registering electoral witnesses until March 5. These observers will monitor vote counting at polling stations to ensure that each ballot is processed without technical irregularities.

Civil society warns of democratic risks due to Petro’s speech on electoral fraud President Gustavo Petro also recalled that previous electoral processes in the country have faced serious irregularities that affected the legitimacy of parliamentary representation in several regions. Authorities said that the reinforcement of security forces and broader monitoring at polling stations aim to ensure that the elections take place under conditions of fairness and transparency.

  • Venezuela and the United States Resume Diplomatic Relations - Telesur English

Venezuela and the United States agreed to restore diplomatic and consular relations after years of tension, a decision that seeks to strengthen regional stability and promote political dialogue based on on mutual respect, sovereign and cooperation. The Governments of Venezuela and the United States have decided to re-establish diplomatic and consular relations on March 5, after a “diplomatic dialogue established with the authorities of the United States of America”, according to the Venezuelan official communiqué.

This crucial understanding was formalized this Thursday, marking a significant shift influenced by key energy factors. In this sense, Venezuelan authorities expressed its confidence that this process will contribute to strengthening understanding and opening opportunities for a positive and mutually beneficial relationship, reaffirming the willingness to move forward into a new phase of constructive dialogue based on mutual respect, sovereign and cooperation between both countries.

This step “accompanies the fertile dialogue that Venezuelans hold among themselves, aimed at strengthening coexistence, peace, and national understanding”, Venezuelan authorities affirmed.

The formal reestablishment of embassies and consulates represents an essential tool for serving citizens and resuming normal consular services, making possible to process visas, documentation, and other administrative procedures.

The coming months will be marked by the definition of diplomatic teams and the coordination of bilateral agendas, focused on trade, migration, and international cooperation issues, in shared vision about the importance of an institutional framework that benefits both the Venezuelan and U.S. people.

The re-establishment of diplomatic ties occurred in the context of the visit of U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to Caracas, which facilitated the signing of crucial energy sector agreements.

Just three weeks prior, U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher Wright also visited the country, during which both nations agreed to advance in establishing projects in the areas of oil, gas, and electrical energy, emphasizing the energy-driven impetus for this diplomatic thaw.

The resume move is aligned with a vision of harnessing national wealth for comprehensive development, strengthening both economic prosperity and national security through responsible and strategic international alliances.

This diplomatic rapprochement comes after the U.S. imperialist attack against Venezuela on last January, 3, which resulted with the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and the First Combatant Cilia Flores and their subsequently illegal transferred to a New York’s prison.

In this sense, the formal re-establishment of embassies and consulates is therefore not merely a functional step but also a symbolic act towards fulfilling a historical vision of peaceful coexistence, providing a direct channel for addressing various issues and serving citizens effectively.

  • Idk if anyone posted about this, but while the US and Israel were getting beaten by Iran and the resistance. Trump was larping and trying to create a new OAS (something the US created to fuck with Cuba), a organization called Shield of the Americas.

    This is their logo:

As I posted earlier, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, and Mexico (the social democratic left in Latin America) boycotted it, while Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, and Nicaragua were not invited. But there are some surprises: Peru (under the leftist provisional government), Suriname (under the socdem goverment) and Guatemala also boycotted it.

The countries that actually attended were the usual bootlickers: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Guyana, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, and Honduras.

  • Anyway, I was going to say that the US is more like Mr. Satan. But even though Mr. Satan was a fraud and an idiot, he had a heart of gold.

What do you mean? He defeated Cell, don't diss the Champ like that.

  • Mohammad Reza wanted to go back to Mexico, saying he had pleasant memories of Cuernavaca, but was refused. Mexico was a candidate to be a rotating member of the UN Security Council, but needed the vote of Cuba to be admitted, and the Cuban leader Fidel Castro told President José López Portillo that Cuba's vote was conditional on Mexico not accepting the Shah again.

He left the United States on 15 December 1979 and lived for a short time in the Isla Contadora in Panama. This caused riots by Panamanians who objected to the Shah being in their country. General Omar Torrijos, the dictator of Panama, kept Mohammad Reza Shah as a virtual prisoner at the Paitilla Medical Center, a hospital condemned by the former Shah's US doctors as "an inadequate and poorly staffed hospital", and in order to hasten his death allowed only Panamanian doctors to treat his cancer.

General Torrijos, a populist left-winger, had only taken in Mohammad Reza under heavy US pressure, and he made no secret of his dislike of Mohammad Reza, whom he called after meeting him "the saddest man he had ever met". When he first met Mohammad Reza, Torrijos taunted him by telling him "it must be hard to fall off the Peacock Throne into Contadora" and called him a chupon, a Spanish slang term for "someone who is finished".

Torrijos added to Mohammad Reza's misery by making his chief bodyguard a militantly Marxist sociology professor who spent much time lecturing Mohammad Reza on how he deserved his fate because he had been a tool of the "American imperialism" that was ostensibly oppressing the Third World, and charged Mohammad Reza a monthly rent of US$21,000, making him pay for all his food and the wages of the 200 National Guardsmen assigned as his bodyguards.

President Carter did not wish to admit Mohammad Reza to the US but came under pressure from Henry Kissinger, who phoned Carter to say he would not endorse the SALT II treaty that Carter had just signed with the Soviet Union unless the former Shah was allowed into the United States, reportedly prompting Carter more than once to hang up his phone in rage in the Oval Office and shout "Fuck the Shah!".

On 22 October 1979, President Jimmy Carter reluctantly allowed the Shah into the United States to undergo surgical treatment at the Weill Cornell Medical Center. While there, Mohammad Reza used the name of "David D. Newsom," Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs at that time, as his temporary code name, without Newsom's knowledge. Mohammad Reza's time in New York was highly uncomfortable; he was under a heavy security detail as every day, Iranian students studying in the US gathered outside his hospital to shout "Death to the Shah!", a chorus that Mohammad Reza heard.

  • Brazil (and Uruguay) and Colombia also refused to go, they didn't invite Venezuela, Cuba or Nicaragua.

  • I believe they are using ai to make these tweets tbh.

  • One of the last thing Gabriel Boric did before leaving office was send 1 million USD to Cuba via the UN, he also seem to have compared the US Embargo against Cuba to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, and the Israeli genocide against Palestine. Early this year China sent 60 Million USD in emergency AID to Cuba.

  • Well, Trump invited a bunch of LATAM leaders to basically threaten them to stop doing business with China and to bootlick the US even more. Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Uruguay, Cuba, Nicaragua and Colombia boycotted it or were not invited.

  • Putin expresses condolences to the Iranian president on the death of the supreme leader - Prensa Latina

Moscow, March 6 (Prensa Latina) Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a telephone conversation today with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, expressed his condolences for the assassination of the Supreme Leader of the Persian country, Ali Khamenei.

"Putin again expressed his condolences for the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his family members, and the country's political and military leadership. He also mourned the deaths of numerous civilians who were victims of the aggression directed against Iran," the Kremlin press office said on Friday.

The president also reiterated Moscow's position on the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Middle East.

"Putin confirmed Russia's position on the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Middle East, the renunciation of violent methods for resolving the problems surrounding Iran and the entire region in general, and the return to the path of a political and military solution," the statement emphasized.

For his part, Pezeshkian expressed his gratitude for the solidarity of the Eurasian nation with the Iranian people, who defend the sovereignty and independence of their homeland,” the message reads.

The Iranian president also briefed his Russian counterpart in detail on the developing situation during the current acute phase of the conflict. Both leaders agreed to maintain contact through various channels.

On February 28, the United States and Israel began coordinated attacks against Iran, less than 48 hours after the end of the third round of indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran on the Iranian nuclear program in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Iran is responding to the offensive with retaliatory strikes against Israel and US military bases in Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. Drone and missile launches toward military targets have also been reported in Azerbaijan, Cyprus, and Turkey, though Iran denies responsibility.

The ongoing armed conflict also disrupted air traffic over the Arabian Peninsula, leaving tens of thousands of travelers stranded in numerous countries, as well as navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is key to the global trade of hydrocarbons.

The death toll in Iran from the US and Israeli attacks is 1,230, according to the Veterans and Martyrs Foundation; while the number of wounded exceeded 6,180, according to the Iranian Ministry of Health.

  • Argentine president heads to US to strengthen military cooperation - Prensa Latina

Buenos Aires, Feb 6 (Prensa Latina) Argentine President Javier Milei departs today for the United States on his fifteenth visit to reaffirm his absolute geopolitical alignment with the administration of Donald Trump and try to convince companies to invest in Argentina.

Likewise, in Florida he will attend the so-called Shield of the Americas Summit convened by Trump and in which leaders from 12 Latin American nations out of the 32 existing ones will participate.

There, the current White House chief seeks to unite twelve countries in the region under the premise of "promoting freedom and security," and behind the scenes, to get them to join his campaign against China. The meeting on Saturday will take place at a Trump-owned hotel in the Doral area.

From there, he will travel to New York to participate in Argentina Week, where he plans to speak with businesspeople with the intention of convincing them to invest in Argentina.

On his return trip, he will make a stop in Santiago, Chile to participate in the inauguration ceremony of President José Antonio Kast, with whom he shares a far-right ideological position.

The Argentine press reports that the visit is taking place amid a heated international scenario due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East caused by the combined aggression of the United States and Israel against Iran.

The Argentine news agency Noticias Argentinas points out that the objective is clear: to strengthen military cooperation in a context where the Pentagon is closely monitoring movements on the world's hot borders.

Milei's trip follows the military agreement sealed by Defense Minister Carlos Presti, who participated in a recent regional conference on "regional security" in Miami where several participants supported a continental initiative of the White House, in which there was no mention of the Argentine claim for sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

According to local media reports today, the country signed the declaration promoted by Washington to coordinate joint actions against, according to the official slogan, narcoterrorism and organized crime on the continent.

The accession was formalized by Minister Presti, during an international conference held in Miami on Thursday with military and political authorities from more than a dozen countries.

  • Iranian president reveals mediation efforts to end the war - Prensa Latina

Tehran, March 6 (Prensa Latina) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian revealed today that several countries have begun mediation efforts to end the war between his country, on one side, and the United States and Israel, on the other, a conflict that has now lasted seven days.

In a message posted on social media, the president stated that Tehran's position on the crisis is clear. "Iran is committed to working for lasting peace in the region, but at the same time will not hesitate to defend its dignity and sovereignty," he said.

Pezeshkian stressed that any mediation should be directed, he said, at those who caused the crisis by ignoring the will of the Iranian people.

The president's remarks come as the exchange of attacks continues between Iran, on one side, and the United States and Israel, on the other.

Tehran accuses Washington and Tel Aviv of expanding the scope of their bombings to include civilian infrastructure and non-military targets.

In this context, Iranian media reported that the Interim Leadership Council held a meeting chaired by Pezeshkian to discuss the convening of the Leadership Expert Council.

That body is responsible for choosing the successor to Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, whose death in Israeli airstrikes last Saturday was confirmed by Iranian authorities.

  • Iran Forces USS Abraham Lincoln to Flee to Indian Ocean - Telesur English

The military action demonstrated knowledge of the maritime domain in real time. On Wednesday, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) confirmed that four Iranian missiles managed to hit the USS Abraham Lincoln, forcing this aircraft carrier to flee further into the Indian Ocean.

“The episode introduces immediate global ramifications for naval force posture doctrine, carrier strike group logistics footprint management, and Indo-Pacific maritime security calculations, as the repositioning of a U.S. nuclear-powered supercarrier away from Iranian littoral waters reshapes the balance of deterrence credibility across the Gulf of Oman and western Indian Ocean,” commented the online outlet Defence Security Asia.

“The engagement occurred while the USS Abraham Lincoln operated within a 250–300 kilometre corridor off Chabahar, a distance that placed the carrier inside an actionable anti-ship cruise missile threat envelope consistent with Iran’s layered coastal defence posture.”

“The firing of four cruise missiles from IRGC naval elements demonstrated a coordinated targeting and launch sequence that required integrated coastal surveillance, fire-control alignment, and real-time maritime domain awareness sufficient to track and prosecute a moving high-value naval target,” Defence Security Asia pointed out.

IRGC spokesperson Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naeini informed that the Iranian response to imperialist aggression has left no less than 680 U.S soldiers dead or wounded in combat.

On Tuesday, Iran’s Armed Forces summarized a series of successful operations conducted against the aggressors, highlighting the following actions:

-. Targeting the U.S. Marine Corps base at Camp Arifjan with 10 drones. More than 160 U.S. Marines were present and estimations put over 100 casualties in the combined drone–missile attack.

-. Downing of an Israeli Hermes drone by IRGC air defense over Khorramabad.

-. Targeting the US air base in Sheikh Isa, Bahrain in a large drone and missile operation at dawn. 10 strategic command and equipment sites were struck, including the air command-and-control center, aircraft fuel depots, and residences of senior U.S. commanders.

-. Downing of an armed intact Hermes-900 drone with EW systems.

-. Destruction of positions of separatist terrorist groups in Iraqi Kurdistan using 30 drones launched by IRGC Ground Force units. The group were planning infiltration operations.

-. Targeting a 2nd THAAD anti-missile system radar in West Asia with precision missiles, making the system out of operation. It adds that a THAAD radar at Al-Ruwais in the UAE had also been destroyed the previous day.

-. The Iranian (Artesh) Army also carried out multiple attacks on enemy forces. The army’s air-defense units shot down 7 Israeli drones, bringing the total downed drones of the American–Zionist enemies to 35.

-. Military areas in Israel, as well as U.S. ships and bases including Al-Udeid base in Qatar, were targeted by the Iranian Navy using drones and surface-to-surface missiles.

  • Ensuring Safety of Bushehr Nuclear Facility Must Be a Priority: Russia - Telesur English

Zakharova warns of potential radioactive threat and criticizes U.N. nuclear watchdog. On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said her country insists on prioritizing the security of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which Russia operates in Iran.

“We are paying special attention to the situation around the Bushehr nuclear power plant. According to Russian nuclear experts, the plant is under threat as explosions can be heard kilometers from the facility,” she said. The Russian diplomat urged the warring parties to prioritize ensuring Bushehr’s security and to regularly communicate to Russia “relevant signals through all available channels.”

On Tuesday, Russia’s state atomic energy company Rosatom warned that the Bushehr plant is facing increasing danger as the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran continues. “Any violation of the integrity of the reactor or fuel storage facilities would mean contamination of vast territories and completely unpredictable movements of the contaminating substance, which would depend on atmospheric phenomena,” Rosatom stated.

Zakharova also accused the International Atomic Energy Agency of downplaying the potential radiological threat unleashed by the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

“Its attempts to turn a blind eye or underestimate the importance of the real threat are unacceptable,” Zakharova said, adding that United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres must play his role in preventing further escalation of the Middle East conflict.

The U.S.-Israeli war on Iran is seriously harming the global energy market, Zakharova said, emphasizing that countries in Europeans are the most affected.

Her remarks came after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced March 2 the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime corridor through which about 20 million barrels of oil pass daily, equivalent to 25% of global crude trade and 20% of liquefied gas.

In response to the potential energy crisis, President Donald Trump said the U.S. Navy would begin escorting oil tankers to ensure the security of maritime trade and protect energy shipments.

  • Ukraine sending experts to Middle East to help counter Iranian drones - The Hill

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday announced his country is sending some of its military specialists to the Middle East to help counter Iranian drones and missiles.

In a post to the social platform X, Zelensky said he has tasked Ukraine’s minister of foreign affairs, minister of defense, intelligence agencies and the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine “to present options for assisting the relevant countries and to provide aid in a way that does not weaken our own defense” in Ukraine.

“In just a few days, Iran has launched over 800 missiles of various types and more than 1,400 attack drones. It is Iranian drones and missiles that pose the main threat to free navigation, destabilizing global prices for oil, petroleum products, and gas,” he wrote.

He noted he is consulting with partners in Europe and the United States and that he spoke with the leaders of several countries neighboring Iran, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan and Bahrain. Talks with Kuwait and other countries in the region are also planned.

“All of them face a serious challenge and speak openly about it: Iranian attack drones are the same ‘shaheds’ that have been striking our cities, villages, and our Ukrainian infrastructure throughout this war,” he added.

Iran’s delta-winged Shahed 136 drones have long been used by Russian forces in its ongoing war with Ukraine.

The relatively cheap weapons, which cost roughly $50,000 to produce, are quickly becoming a problem in the now five-day U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. The drones have hit regional allies of Washington, including the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, as Tehran attempts to inflict damage to Gulf countries friendly with the U.S. or hosting American troops.

The attack drones represent a major challenge to the U.S. military, with air defenses unable to detect and intercept them all given their ability to fly low and slow, Trump administration officials told lawmakers during a closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, as reported by CNN.

What’s more, the easy-to-manufacture aircraft are causing American forces to rapidly use up expensive and hard-to-produce munitions and are able to sneak through and damage bases, ports and critical infrastructure when defenses get saturated. It was a drone attack that killed six U.S. service members on Sunday in Kuwait.

Ukraine has become an expert in Shaheds, as Russia has used the drones to attack cities, infrastructure and military positions since fall 2022.

Zelensky said the Ukrainian experts sent to the Middle East will operate on-site, with teams already coordinating such efforts.

“We are ready to help protect lives, defend civilians, and support real efforts to stabilize the situation and, in particular, restore safe navigation in the region,” he said.

He also called on the European Union, European countries and the Group of Seven “to take active measures both in dismantling the Iranian regime’s terrorist capabilities and in protecting lives in the region and global stability.”

They coup'ed Lugo in Paraguay, and did everything possible to sabotage the left and socdems, all this under Obama btw.
