Baby we ain’t even in Omelas. This place fucking sucks for everybody except the top 1%. Omelas at least only sucks for the bottom 0.00001%

If this is Omelas the kid in the basement is like billions of people

Reverse Omela; Ursula had a surprisingly optimistic vision of a utopia; only one person had to suffer for the Omela

(Alternatively, after everything colonial powers have done to the global South with the tacit and sometimes outspoken support by libs, reality was like ‘tag you’re it’)

I’ve never read the story because the basic premise sounded really stupid. By what mechanism did the suffering of one child bring about prosperity for millions?

I think it was explained as some supernatural reason that just made utopia a reality by this kid suffering; It was supposed to be more a metaphorical story than a serious one (which is ironic because real world omela is so much worse, but also real)

Not really ironic because thats the point of the story - it’s an intentional inversion of the real world that isn’t meant to highlight the horror of a single person’s suffering for the rest of society, but our entire society suffering for a handful of people.

I think thats the point. It didnt, everyone just believed completely that it did. I think a lack of clear mechanism is where the different takes come from. Its more of a thought experiment than a story.

People on Hexbear will really be like “You believe in leaving? That pales in effectiveness to my strategy, firebombing Omelas” and then not firebomb Omelas.

Omelas is supposed to be the whole Capitalist world. The kid is the Global South, it’s the poor, it’s the disabled, it’s everyone oppressed.

It drives me crazy that people think it’s an abstract argument or a philosophical thought experiment.

Omelas is an interesting thought experiment, unfortunately it doesn’t explain how did the society manage to produce itself based on the suffering of one child. There is nothing original in that book that hasn’t been written by philosophers 1000 years ago already.

If anything Omelas is just a totem used to distract you, all the exploitation conveniently blamed on a single one entity.
