When Kelly Poole found a familiar owl in her shed looking sick and lethargic, she contacted Ringgold VA Wildlife Rescue, who helped get him to Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center of Roanoke for an evaluation.
Experts discovered he was actually healthy and going through a “catastrophic molt,” and after being released, he was later spotted nearby with his feathers grown back and looking like himself again.

The after photo is also great. Poor lil guy was going through some shit.
I’m sure we can all relate… “this isn’t even my final form!”
We have no clue what dinosaurs actually looked like, but i think this may help. What a beaut!
Molting Screech time is one of my favorite times of the year! 😁
I released two a few weeks ago that look a smidge better than this, but I look at them and it’s like, you look worse than when you came into the clinic!
They can lose all those head feathers at once because it doesn’t impact flying. It’s during the warm months, and they probably appreciate the breeze. All the other feathers they lose one or two at a time from the wings or tail so they don’t lose their aerodynamics and have their flight ability messed up.
I mean, shit, if you take a picture of me at the darkest point of my life, I’d be scrungly too. Give him some grace.

I can relate owl…
I have learned a new word. I will use it frequently.
Reminds me of early Johnny Cash when he was really “feelin’ the g’s” as they say.
i was for sure certain this would be from australia or something, never heard scrungly before lol
I once saw a picture of an owl kinda like this, it was looking more upward toward the camera, had one eye open and one eye kind of squinted, and it was captioned in impact font “…bless you.”
